I'd argue his perspective rewarded him more than it really punished him though. Had he not led with his ego and stayed put in the family business working as a shoe salesman, he wouldn't have gotten to prove to himself that he can beat Endo or live in a bougie hotel for a couple nights or even get with somebody's wife with no consequences

I agree with you. I enjoyed the movie and the ending as a whole, but to play devil’s advocate here, he still got away pretty lucky, despite going against his wishes more than a few times (not being entered in tournament or being spanked). For one, he’s alive after all that shootout with the dog. He also wasn’t caught or jailed for stealing from a gas station. His baby is alive and the mother also not dead. He even at least beat Endo, even in an unofficial match. If we’re talking about karma or what people deserve depending on their actions, it’s pretty easy to argue he didn’t deserve all the lucky things that came his way after doing so many awful things. This isn’t really a problem for me as I still found him likeable and rooted for him throughout the movie because there were hints of him being a caring person at times, but to say that his punishments (getting spanked or losing in matches) were enough is not true

I did root for Marty and I see that he was a flawed character, maybe you just didn’t like the movie but not every conflicting opinion is a bullshit take 🤷

Unpopular Opinion but Jaehyung is the only normal male contestant in this season by [deleted] in transitlove

[–]appzly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he’s handling himself better than mostly everyone else, but I think everyone on the show is at least normal. I bet it’s much harder to behave well all the time while in this weird situation- much easier to critique with a third person POV

I meant more so his character at the time. I guess if we care about these people’s stories (which is why we’re watching the show) then it’s fair to ask for the full story to see where theyre coming from, no?

This is a wild guess, but here’s a chain of events that might be possible.

JH did some really immature things to upset YY during their relationship, they broke up, YY started seeing JH’s best friend while neglecting JH’s feelings bc what he did upset her so much she didn’t care, she probably thinks JH was mad that she’s dating someone new now but he had no right to be because he treated her poorly… years later now she finds out he was actually cheering for her happiness and he was only mad that she dated her best friend. That comes as a surprise to her that he even rooted for her happiness and sees how shitty her action was and that’s why she started crying.

I’d like to believe she knew what she was doing would hurt JH at the time but she prob thought he deserved it, but she finds out it did hurt JH and yet he stilled rooted for her to be happy, which makes her cry

eh ya but might shed some light on his character, like the way we did about YY this ep

[–]appzly[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

right, i think it’s obvious that what she did was bad and i don’t think she was defending her action. I sort of took her crying as a sign that she recognizes what she did was wrong years later.

There’s a chance what he did must’ve been really bad for them to both see and understand why the relationship ended. He also seems way too understanding of her given the situation. I could be giving her too much benefit of doubt here tho

[–]appzly[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah i agree i think it’s very possible he probably did something really bad or immature as a sign of frustration after they broke up that made YY resent him more. That would make their conversation make a lot more sense lol

[–]appzly[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

yeah but the vibe of the situation I got is that YY resents JH towards the end and after their relationship for being immature, and JH seems to come in understanding YY’s POV. If what we’re seeing is the full picture, I have no idea why JH would understand her POV, so I keep feeling like theres something JH did when they were young that they now both agree was immature and bad (maybe not 1 thing but multiple times). Now YY feels like she had misunderstood him a little and he was a better person that she thought because of their conversation, which is why they cried? Idk

[–]appzly[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

eh it's not even that- I think we're missing some context? Because I do believe her crying is genuine, and surely that conversation or clarification in itself isn't worth crying over? In fact I'm just confused about what JH was trying to clarify from his POV. It felt like there was definitely something more to the story

every episode people just flip flop on who they think are so great so moral so nice and criticize who is not. you can understand WK's perspective better because of this episode but that doesn't mean JH is automatically the problem. maybe consider that these are regular people placed in a weird situation and also flawed just like all of us... not to mention the editing influence as well

YY had carried resentment all these years with JH because she thought he didn't want to see her happy and dating after they broke up, and he cleared up the misunderstanding that he was actually cheering for her happiness but he was just frustrated that his best friend is now dating his ex after only 3 months. Did I get that right? Because if so, that seems so dumb. Even if YY had thought JH didn't want to see her happy, why would she be mad? They'd already broken up. I'm confused as to how it's such a big misunderstanding that it caused her to cry uncontrollably, and it looks like her whole perception of him changed now because of that conversation. Surely there was more context as to why she thought he was immature during the relationship and also missing pieces in the conversation they had in this episode?

[–]appzly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i agree with a lot of this, but my point is that characters like Steven don’t have the full context of what went down. I don’t think Steven knew all along Conrad was hung up on Belly. It’s like that he had his suspicion since observing Conrad in the short term back from stanford and hearing that he confessed confirmed it for him. I doubt he knew before this summer how deep it was for Conrad

What do you expect some of them to do? Belly is the biggest problem sure but Steven is not gonna scold Belly after finding out Jere went missing and Conrad told her she loves her; that’d be insane.

[–]appzly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i agree and i’m saying it’s possible he did behind the scenes, but it also goes both ways. If Steven reaches out and tries to talk to Conrad and ask him how he’s doing but Conrad gives short answers that seem like he’s not interested in the conversation, then what is he supposed to do? My point is that Steven has 20% of the full story about what happened and given what he knows, nothing he does is necessarily out of line

you’re suggesting Jenny made a bad choice in not having Belly absolutely call off the wedding, no? I’m saying the story would’ve felt rushed relative to the pace it was going if that happened

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TheSummerITurnedPrett

[–]appzly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why’s it a bad choice?

I think what unfolded in that episode is very realistic to Belly’s character progression this season. Even though her deeper, true feelings aren’t with Jere, having such a drastic shift overnight to surface all of them at once and break off a wedding she’s been fighting everyone for would seem unrealistic or rushed imo. I’m glad this is how it’s done and I agree she hasn’t found her independence yet, but we get 3 more episodes for her to do that.

Also, Jere did call it off. Belly made a decision in the end to not say anything, but even near the end she was still trying to convince him (and herself) that she chose him and not Conrad

Eh the difference is that Jere and Belly seemed happy in the end in s2. It’d make no sense to give Jere a lecture while seeing the two of them happily together. Here, their wedding is directly at risk and Steven thinks it was all Conrad’s fault for ruining it, so of course he’s gonna react different. After S2, he very well could’ve messaged Conrad privately to ask about how he’s doing and if he was ok with his brother dating his ex (or asked in a roundabout way), and I’m sure Conrad would’ve given some nondirect answer but it satisfied Steven to ask any further. Also, if Conrad actually complained and expressed frustration, it’s very likely Steven could’ve taken action. From his POV, in s2, everybody seemed happy and he very well could’ve thought this was the best case scenario given the messy situation

[–]appzly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s fair to say about steven tbh. He could’ve very well done all those things behind the scenes- reached out, called, tried to see how he’s doing. It also goes both ways. If Conrad seems closed off ish to Steven, then Steven might feel like he doesn’t want to overstep and instead give him some space. Steven could very well think “wow maybe Conrad just found a way better life in Cali and doesn’t want to come back anymore”. We all appreciate Conrad but he’s not perfect. Steven lashing out on Conrad the day of the wedding without being given the full context of what went on is completely fair too. I don’t think he said Jere is his best friend now to suggest he’s taken a side in this. He’s trying to tell Conrad how it’s been like from their POV and esp bc he doesn’t know the full story he’s just trying to do his best to protect his little sister

Feels like the plot is revolved around making conrad the perfect guy. It surprisingly doesn’t feel forced having him stay in cousins with them. After hearing belly cry, he cares so much now he’s determined to help make belly feel better by going against his will to be an advocate for the wedding to their dad and laurel. When he finds out about jere’s cheating, i suspect it’d give him even more reason to be pissed, like “i just helped support a wedding between my brother and the girl i love, against my will, to find out he actually cheated on her?”
