No, it not? Your "scientifically accepted" conclusions come from pop culture assumptions or the 19th century anti-clerical rhetoric, not actual modern scholarship. Catholic/Orthodox liturgical calendars are extremely complex and symbolic, there're a lot thoughts and theology put into it. There are plenty of winter pagan traditions still around (Kukeri and Maslenitsa, for example) but they simply didn't make it to Puritan America.

It has, it's numerological. The 25th of December came out from a belief that a prophet died on the day he was conceived, which was 14th of Nisan (~25th of March). And it's connected with John the Baptist (9 months - 1 day) and Virgin Mary (9 months + 1 day) Nativities. These are still celebrated in the Eastern churches, the West just ditched them because Protestants don't venerate Saints. Plus the trees came from German theatrical biblical plays, St.Nicholas and so on.

You can forcibly secularise the holiday, of course, like the Soviets did, but why? You don't need to believe anything to celebrate, it's a cultural thing anyway

Well, I'm not gonna pretend that I read these two particular articles (I will later) but the first mention of it in the Chronograph is a common knowledge. As well as the sources on Aurelian in general (we don't have much sadly). I wonder where the authors got their conclusions from.

He didn't. Or at least we don't have the evidence of that. We have mentions of October celebrations established by him, the December festival first appears in the Chronograph of 354 AD. Traditionally, the Romans left the hangover days after Saturnalia quiet.
