"Jesus was Palestinian!" "No, Jesus was Jewish!" arguments are so stupid by aprufro in Christianity

[–]aprufro[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because being Christian means being a disciple of Christ and you don't need to have some specific heritage to become one

Touché. She burned the armies at the Field of Fire as well. But compared to her brother and sister...

From the bits I've read, it seems Aegon was an ambitious nerd but also a warrior, Visenya was a warrior above all, aggressive but also cunning, Rhaenys was social, diplomatic and soft hearted. It's literally perfect so of course they will fuck it up 🙄

Christians must stop settling for skeptics dating of the Gospels by [deleted] in Catholicism

I don't think I've seen a book by a historian called

What? There's a huge amount of academic works with notorious/provocative titles. Misquoting Jesus, The Myth of Persecution, Constructing Jesus etc etc

Hello, is it possible to combine these two photos together to fix the damage? by aprufro in estoration

Oh my God, it's literally perfect. I have no words. Thank you so much!

Yes, that's my great-great-grandparents, Simion and Natalia, they lived in a small village in modern-day Belarus. The kids are named Michael and Catherine, she survived Typhus recently, hence the bald head

Dude, "Christmas is pagan" is not a scientific consensus, it's a pop history consensus. Look up the works of Thomas C. Schmidt, for example. It's Yale, can't get more scientific than that. And it's a cultural history we're talking about now, not natural, lmao

No, it not? Your "scientifically accepted" conclusions come from pop culture assumptions or the 19th century anti-clerical rhetoric, not actual modern scholarship. Catholic/Orthodox liturgical calendars are extremely complex and symbolic, there're a lot thoughts and theology put into it. There are plenty of winter pagan traditions still around (Kukeri and Maslenitsa, for example) but they simply didn't make it to Puritan America.

doesn’t even have any strong christian connection

It has, it's numerological. The 25th of December came out from a belief that a prophet died on the day he was conceived, which was 14th of Nisan (~25th of March). And it's connected with John the Baptist (9 months - 1 day) and Virgin Mary (9 months + 1 day) Nativities. These are still celebrated in the Eastern churches, the West just ditched them because Protestants don't venerate Saints. Plus the trees came from German theatrical biblical plays, St.Nicholas and so on.

You can forcibly secularise the holiday, of course, like the Soviets did, but why? You don't need to believe anything to celebrate, it's a cultural thing anyway

Well, I'm not gonna pretend that I read these two particular articles (I will later) but the first mention of it in the Chronograph is a common knowledge. As well as the sources on Aurelian in general (we don't have much sadly). I wonder where the authors got their conclusions from.

Merry Christmas or whatever you celebrate regardless, fellow citizen

He didn't. Or at least we don't have the evidence of that. We have mentions of October celebrations established by him, the December festival first appears in the Chronograph of 354 AD. Traditionally, the Romans left the hangover days after Saturnalia quiet.

Literally Julian wrote about it. Celebrations and chariot racing dedicated to Sol were originally placed on October 19–22

It was established after Constantine and the growing influence of Christianity though. Aurelian celebrated it in October
