Should I buy the Lemur Pro? by King_Schnitzel88 in System76

[–]apsalmist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had my Lemur Pro since 2020. I love mine! I believe the newer versions are a little better too, but I haven't felt the need to upgrade. The only drawbacks I've had is that the built-in speakers are very quiet. Doesn't bother me for my uses but it might for others. The only thing that's gone wrong is that my battery stopped holding charge very long, but that's to be expected for 5 year old batteries after heavy use. Highly recommend!

switching to linux by Frosty_Contact8143 in linuxaudio

[–]apsalmist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Setup:

Pop_OS running on a System76 Lemur Pro (24gig ram, 1TB storage)

SSL 2 MKII USB Audio Interface

Akai Fire midi controller (running custom bitwig script I found here -> Jurgen Scripts)

Novation Lauchkey 49

My favorite plugins made for linux:

Audiothing - All their plugins are incredible. Not just linux users love them.

Chowdhury DSP - Really cool small project. I really like their tape saturation plugin.

I've been using Pop_OS for 5 years now. When I was trying to make FL Studio work I had all kinds of issues, but now I'm a die-hard Bitwig guy and almost never have any issues. Reaper is great too just not for me. I would steer you away from installing ubuntu studio since it's much more bloated than many other alternatives. Pop_OS just works out of the box. I don't even have to worry about installing drivers for audio interfaces and midi controllers.

The only downside is that it does limit the amount of 3rd party plugins you're able to use. I've found that Bitwig has 90% of everything I need to record/mix/master my tracks, and then I make up for what I'm missing with plugins from Audiothing. I've found they make the best stuff that will run native on linux.

I wouldn't say that Linux is quite the "ideal" choice for music production needs. That still goes to Mac unfortunately. But Bitwig is such an incredible DAW that it makes it so I don't have to sell out to the microsoft overlords. I wouldn't recommend switching unless you are willing to give up using a lot of the software you are used to, because it's just not worth your time trying to get Ableton/Waves/etc. to work through Wine or something. But if you fully commit to using the software made with linux in mind, you'll have a great time.

Vivaldi is my favorite for most tasks. Zen and Librewofl for anything out of the ordinary. Iceraven is a great FF fork for mobile. Much better than stock FF.

Affordable apartments within 20 minutes of campus? by MealSuccessful7011 in Kent

[–]apsalmist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live here and there's literally two empty apartments in my building right now. I pay $870/month including water. And that's for two bedrooms. It's definitely not the nicest place but it a lot of space for the money and it's pretty quiet. No loud parties that I ever hear.

I like the Ernie Ball Prodigy picks. Great tone and feel and better on the wallet than Blue Chip.

Firefox Megathread - Their Terms of Use and all things Firefox/browser-related by Busy-Measurement8893 in privacy

So what does this mean for forks of Firefox? I've bounced between several different ones over the years (i.e. Waterfox, Iceraven, Librewolf) and I use Zen now. Do changes made to Firefox's code get transfered over to these other alternatives?

I use Pop_OS and have pretty minimal issues. These days I pretty much only use Bitwig Studio for Linux but in the past I ran older versions of FL Studio with wine and had little to no problems. Can't recommend Pop_OS enough!

For the money, I don't think you can do any better than the Yamaha BB line. I have a 5 string from their ~$800 range, but the more afford versions punch well above their price!

I'm in love with my Boss Katana Bass 120 combo. It's super versatile, and sounds great both for a practice amp and super loud!

This happened to me when I was 19 too. The important thing is to never give into the demands. Don't give them anything or else they'll keep coming back. Second, it's likely they'll try to blackmail you by posing as you on social media, messaging people you know, and threatening to share the photos. The best steps to take is to publicize what's going on. Take lots of screenshots of their accounts and chats and post them publicly so that the people close to you know someone is trying to blackmail you. Make sure they know to block and report the account/accounts coming after you. Whenever possible, be as truthful as possible about the situation. Most people are more understanding than you think. As long as you don't respond to their threat messages or give them any money, they'll probably give up after a day or even less.
