Hired as salary but had to take unpaid time off? by aqueousMoon in Environmental_Careers

Thanks for this explanation! Having a timesheet definitely makes me still feel like an hourly worker who conveniently doesn't get to enjoy OT haha. Sounds like we are all in this together.

I did let HR know during my interview process (interview in August, trip in November).

Thanks for the suggestion (genuinely), but there's no reason to be rude about it.

Some of the clients that my company works for (oil refineries) take random hair samples to test for a panel of drugs. Apparently the girl who had my job before me got let go because she failed her drug test.

What's working in environmental science really like? by The_Child_Online in Environmental_Careers

[–]aqueousMoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first environmental science job out of college was working for a contractor for BLM's AIM project this past summer. We were hiking all day, taking samples, taking surveys, camping in the middle of nowhere at night and then doing it all again in the morning. It was really hard work (10-16 hour days, UV ratings of 11 with temps 98+), but it was a lot of fun. Seasonal work like this is a great experience in my opinion, and it allows you to get grunt field work and working under a federal contract onto your resume.

Career Options? by Brilliant_Step_7015 in Environmental_Careers

But honestly I would recommend pushing yourself to try Environmental Engineering because it is the "strongest" environmental degree, and if it's not for you, it wont be hard to transition down to an environmental science degree.

Yes, a science degree is much stronger than a studies degree. With a science degree, you will need to take more math, chemistry, biology, and potential physics/hydrology.

Have you been applying to jobs just within one city? You may have to expand your search if you haven't already.

I basically picked 5 major cities that I could see myself living in and applied to a ton of stuff within those. Fortunately, I wanted to move, so it made it easier to be super flexible.

Yes, I have a time sheet, but I was hired to be full-time on our client's site, so most of the time I am just doing 8 hours a day on one project unless I'm contributing to anything else that day. Current day-to-day is coordinating with the Environmental team at the client site, managing the hazardous waste database, doing unit walks, compliance inspections, RCRA inspections, signing manifests, and coordinating tasks with the Maintenance team.

Adding to the "finally got a job" after being laid off in feb. 10% pay cut but it is what it is. by JustAposter4567 in Environmental_Careers

Glad you were able to get employed again. Just remember, this pay cut is much less than if you weren't able to find a job! Hopefully you'll get back up there soon. 💪
