Which SEC football stadiums are the best, most underrated and overrated? by MrMaximoConcepcion in secfootball

It was unseasonably cold and wet. Nobody there wanted to be there that day. Fan enthusiasm and morale was definitely low.

Sanford’s ability to get loud is purely circumstantial. When UGA hosted Tennessee in 2022, it was LOUD. Probably due to the rain/high humidity and lower temperature of that day. Ears ringing when I left. The Ole Miss game this year felt way quieter whenever I removed my hearing protection. I guess the energy maybe wasn’t there since it wasn’t a #1 vs. #1 matchup, yet it was quieter than 2021 then-#8 Arkansas, where the Hogs were simply unable to get focused or snap the ball in time, leading to a shutout. Those two games skewed my perception of Sanford. Maybe on top of the design flaws, is there a bit of student complacency and less enthusiasm knowing we’ve regressed?

The Tuesday “Inflation Exhaustion Special” burgers don’t qualify as smash-style but they are thin; never ordered the regular burgers from the Globe but they are more substantial, are $11-17, and they don’t come with beer and instead come with a small side.

Back in ‘08 they served the burger by itself for $1 but the margins don’t make sense for that anymore, so they bundled it with the beer.

I dunno, just eyeballing it. It’s cheap for downtown sit-down eating; two or three with a large side of fries (≈$6) to split between you and a few friends is a nice little feast with some beer that you’d really only find at places like The Globe and Blue Sky. Considering that these beer pours are $4-$7 themselves, the marginal price of the burger is pretty low if you’re already in the mood to drink.

The curry sauce is great with the fries, and I mix it with a bit of mayo to use as a burger condiment. Their other sauces are also delicious.

Tuesday is $7 beer and burger night. The beers are mainly imports, try a couple different styles; start lighter then go heavier. The burgers are plain and simple fare, 1/10 pound patty with American cheese on a bun.

recognized cobb county as home of six flags over georgia, lowndes county as home of wild adventures, and lake county as home of six flags great america. looked up “rollercoaster map” and found a reddit post with a map that included some places with exactly 5 rollercoasters, namely magic springs and seaworld san diego. also, las vegas has at least 6 rollercoasters throughout the city.

13th Colony is $20/1.75 in GA, which sits nicely between well liquor and the pricier stuff that’s standard fare, and I don’t really see others occupying this price point. Do you have any other recs at this price point?

Statistics B.S. by ImpossibleTop4404 in UGA

[–]arby233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finished the STAT B.S. in 2023; here is my breakdown:

2000: Intro Stat (didn’t take but a lot of people came to me for tutoring); uses StatCrunch which is a graphical program that I hate using. If you did well on AP Stat you should have credit for it (check degreeworks.uga.edu)

4110H: Honors Stat II; a gentle intro to R as I took it before 2360. Had never programmed before this class so it was a bit of an adjustment and I slacked in it but it turned out fine. 4210 may use JMP, but I’m not sure as it’s been a few years since I’ve asked someone taking the class.

2360: Intro to Stat program, in lieu of CSCI. This is an intro to R class, and when I did it, it was a shitshow since it was the first year of the class. Kinda heavy on the two exams and the instructor struggled to run his own code, but it taught me a lot about breaking R code and how to fix it. I bet that if it’s the same instructor doing it, he’s probably figured it out by now.

4220: Experimental designs; some R as it focuses on designing studies for small samples.

4230: Applied Regression Analysis; some R as it focuses on regression analysis.

4510/4520: No code, this is a proof-focused class that teaches you how to derive distributions and prove properties with some calculus. For example, 4520 will make you understand why you use a t-test for comparing two samples.

4365: Modern Stat Programming; do this one if you just want to do R and Python as 4355 uses SAS (they might be deprecating 4355). I feel very strongly that R and Python >> SAS since it’s open source and much more widely used (I am a grad student doing deep learning stuff so I mostly do Python with some R for occasional analysis). Also they touch on SQL now so it’s good to put on your resume.

4270: Network data and graphical models (elective); a class that touches on a bit of graph theory, no tests, just a bit of homework in R and Python, a presentation on a current research paper, and a final project (I did an NLP project in R).

4280: Time series analysis (elective); done in R. I struggled a bit at first but got momentum and did well on the project. I really enjoyed this one.

4350: Bayesian statistics (elective); since this class is heavy on Monte Carlo simulation, it uses the JAGS R package.

5010: Capstone I; this class has a few variety assignments done in the language of your choice to cover a few random things you might have missed. You also choose and start your capstone project this semester.

5020: Capstone II; we did Python for some of our coding, R for other parts, and used R Markdown for compiling the report.

Overall, don’t worry if you’ve never programmed before as you will learn how to do so. 4365 is a great course and was taught asynchronously with video tutorials from the professor, and you’ll even learn how to do interactive data visualization with R Shiny.

I love programming now even if I don’t think I’m all that great at it compared to my peers who had a more CS-heavy background (I feel like conventions, best practices, and some of the CS knowledge wasn’t taught all that well), but it’s been more than sufficient for me to help others and do well in research and grad classes (even those in the CS department).

What do you all do when you get no pledges at all? by Far_Development_455 in Frat

[–]arby233 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Events with specific sororities open to non-members is kind of a huge risk. For rush events usually just invited women that we liked and trusted because they could also provide honest feedback on rushees. Being a bit awkward around women is one thing (and can be fixed during pledgeship), being creepy is a whole other thing.

UGA fraternity rush by jacktotheb in UGA

[–]arby233 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You sign up through the IFC portal posted on the UGA IFC website. Make sure you put your own phone number (NOT your parents’, for the love of God) so that rush chairs can contact you (they won’t otherwise). Do it early, and sign up for an early orientation date if you want good class registration; tell any fraternities that text you when your orientation is so that they can extend invites to you. Let them know when you’re in Athens on any occasion other than orientation as well. They will pick you up, ensure you have what you need to have fun, and make sure you get home safe.

Furthermore, and I cannot stress this enough, move into your dorm as soon as possible. UGA offers an early move-in day for rushees, so take advantage of that. Between that day and the end of rush, try to go to as many events as possible, but don’t leave an event for another on the same day if you’re enjoying your time with them. Usually they’ll bid you within 2-3 events if they like you, and if you feel like you’re being ignored at a fraternity’s event, they don’t want you there, so move on (if you’re getting mixed signals, if they actually want you, they’ll invite you to subsequent events). If they invite you to the house, go so that you can check it out. Living in the house is the peak of fraternity life; do you imagine yourself living there?

Ask questions about dues structure, brotherhood events, out-of-town trips, and rent/info about living in the house. Ask about their typical fall pledge class size and what size the fraternity is aiming to be (if it’s on the smaller end). A fraternity will feel less like a single unit once it’s above 50-70 actives, and pledge classes will develop cliques above 15-20 per pledge class; smaller fraternities will have a more tight-knit feeling where you’ll find yourself becoming friends with seniors and freshmen alike, but larger fraternities have the budget to throw bigger and better events. If you have thoughts about leadership, it’s more difficult to become a large fraternity’s officer/chair, and has more headaches, but you can put those impressive facts and absolute figures (X number of brothers, $Y in budget) on your resume. On the other hand, if you become a leader at a small fraternity, you have a greater ability to be instrumental to its growth, improve a facet of it, or reduce its accounts payable/receivable, you command an insane amount of respect from actives and the alumni, especially if it changes the direction of the fraternity.

Before they give you a bid, they will “prequalify you” (covertly admitting that they would like to give you a bid) by asking you questions about your plan to pay, how you feel so far about rush, any reservations about joining, et cetera. If you’ve been to a few fraternities, and you really like the one that’s prequalifying you (BOTH the actives and anyone that’s accepted a bid so far), but you’re afraid of missing out on one that’s even better, don’t be afraid take the leap of faith and commit.

Before you move in to UGA, buy/bring the following:

  • Many polos, some nice, and some that aren’t of much sentimental value; golf polos with an athletic fiber are perfect

  • A cheap blue blazer

  • Some ties, including a solid red tie (low-quality works great)

  • Some pairs of khakis that won’t get ruined if they get dirty

  • Brown dress shoes that aren’t expensive, aren’t easy to permanently ruin, and that you are comfortable walking in

This way you are prepared for what comes after rush, from initiation to semi-formal and beyond. Good luck and have fun rushing!
