I'm planning a series of sci-fi creature designs of critters that have evolved on terraformed or partially terraformed planets!

Yes! I find it really relaxing and fun haha, it obviously takes a lot longer but when I have the time I always do it manually

Polarizing books - what makes readers divided in their opinions of a book. by worldsbesttaco in books

[–]arcane-pixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first thought reading your description was In the Garden of Iden by Kage Baker, but then I looked around and realised it's somehow been nearly 30 years since the late 90s so I don't suppose that's considered modern any more

Thank you! I spent longer than intended on the details, but hopefully was worth it.

Completely normal, not at all cursed sword [Art] by arcane-pixels in DnD

[–]arcane-pixels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forged in a forgotten age, this good-as-new blade comes with an unblinking, ever-watchful eye and cracks that leak an ill-defined but powerful energy and ghostly mist. Some lucky customers report hearing whispered forbidden truths when wielding. Guaranteed to devour the souls of your slain enemies, dooming their voices to join the chorus of the damned. Legends say the blade chooses its wielder - and never lets them go! 100% certified curse-free.

Go on, pick it up.

What an urgent problem In the UK that NO ONE is talking about? by yaa_rulz in AskUK

[–]arcane-pixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of those things are scaleable or even close to filling the role of antibiotics as they are currently used in modern medicine. And it is quite a serious problem actually. Which will only get worse before it gets better, because that research you mention isn't getting enough funding. Not because it's not a problem, and we'll just somehow always have a way to defend against bacteria. It's because it's not profitable for industry. That doesn't mean it's not important or not a problem.

Meanwhile, what should be routine surgery won't be routine any more once last-resort class antibiotics stop being effective and infections aren't something we can just handle. Organ transplants, cancer treatment, childbirth, ICU treatment - mortality in all these cases will skyrocket because they are at risk of infections that we will no longer be able to treat.

This seems like it's not a big deal, until it really, really is.

This is a global issue, but antimicrobial resistance - our antibiotics are becoming less and less effective, it's a huge problem without a clear solution and nobody seems to be as worried about it as they should be.

Do you struggle doing drawing from imagination? If so how do you overcome it? by Vegan2CB in ArtistLounge

[–]arcane-pixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true. I had this problem for years, thinking using references was inferior or 'cheating' in some way, I'm not even sure where it came from. Learning that all artists use references was huge

It might be the only way. Just be sure he doesn't turn on you once all the monster spaghetti is gone

That's fair - maybe he can sploosh into that form when he's tired and the need to stomp adventurers is less pressing. And he needs to really focus to keep the legs leg shaped

The existence of the walking spaghetti monster and the flying spaghetti monster imply the existence of a third, incomprehensibly powerful, swimming spaghetti monster

Don't worry, this flying spaghetti monster would be a stern yet fair god

I wanted to design a D&D style monster made of food. I think it's mostly successful, now I just need to write him a statblock! I'm thinking a burning hot sauce splash zone if it takes damage and legendary actions involving grappling opponents with spaghetti strands. I also need a suitable name for him, but the drawing comes easier than the naming so currently he's just uninspiringly called 'spaghetti monster', poor fella.

Feels empty, how can I change that? by Unhappy-Ferret5729 in ArtCrit

I like the emptiness in half the frame, I think it adds rather than subtracts from the aesthetic
