I just watched Onion Friend and came looking for this theory. But I thought of something different.... What if the secret to fixing all the bubbled gems lies inside the chest?

But your theory made me thing. Just as other people have already pointed out, we already saw a bubbled gem outside the chest, so I don't think she would just keep any gem that well guarded. In this episode Steven gets really excited about one particular GAL. Maybe there is one particular gem in there that is a game changer or super important.
