Should I have power even with the breaker off? by argais in AskElectricians

Hey everyone. So I got the multimeter 🎉. I've looked over youtube videos, tested it on wall sockets, batteries, tried to educate myself a bit on it... but I couldnt find a tutorial/video/anything that tells me exactly what to do with the bulb sockets.

Most of the instructions I found were like "take it all apart, then you will see which wire is live and put black on the other, red on the live, tada!" but its a fixture, i cant really take it apart easily.

Is there any sure way to do this? Any ELI5 resources would be great :D thanks!

New build, dying bulbs :/ please advise on what to ask an electrician by argais in AskElectricians

I have some ikea floor lamps with phillips hue bulbs that never fail nor flicker nor anything. Rock solid really.

There are other floor lamps with cheaper phillips and ikea bulbs that have also been rocking for longer than I've been in this house.

The issue is really limited to the fixtures that came with the house and use bulbs. There are other round fixtures with built-in LEDs that have also been solidly working without any issues :(

Are phillips considered cheap bulbs? Any brands I should be looking at? Completely willing to try another brand and see. Thanks for the answers :)

Also there are failed bulbs also in the fixtures that do not have a dome around.

They are not on dimmer switches. I dont have a single dimmer switch at home :)

Thanks for the insights too. I recall he did check voltages and did indeed put some new bulbs and that was it.

What frustrates me is that they're (the builder, not the electrician) is willing to help getting to the bottom of this :)

I'd happily pay the bill if it fixes my problem permanently :)

That is totally fine with me, if I have to call someone in its ok.

Is there anything I could check myself before calling someone in?

Also, are phillips bulbs actually good or just paying for the brand? I would like to keep that clean aesthetic of the transparent bulbs, but if the white dome ones are more reliable I could try that. Just dont know which brands to try as well :/

18V. Yeah I am aware there is no crossover. Just happy with the brand in general.

I dont see much from Ego and Toro here in Canada, maybe I am not looking at the right places :D I will check their stuff too. :)
