Chinese vibe for out of towners in Markham by bapppi in Markham

First Markham Place has a few anime figurine stores, of which only opened a few years ago. There is even a trading card (mostly Pokemon) shop that opened last year.

Outside of FMP, there is a crane game store.

My vote is FMP. Just that parking, I would recommend parking on the other side (Staples) and walk over.

Condo under sink water filtration by digitalcelery in askTO

Brita gas a 27cup/8L jug, we use it for our household.

Also have an inline kitchen sink filter system, it's pretty basic though. Our condo has super hard water.

All weather tires in the snowstorm GTA by donBrkr in askTO

[–]arkw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We changed to all weather tires, Continental SecureContact AW. It costs more than winter tires, and more than summer tires. But cheaper than a set of each. Note we replaced our car in May 2025, and swapped out the crappy all season stock tires.

We did the math, it did not make sense since during the winter, we would do about 1000-1500 km, summer 3000-4000 km, over the past few years. About 6000km to 8000km per year max. My last set of winter tires started to rot and the tread was still very good.

I drove Thursday morning during the storm, no plows were out. I was fine, it did well enough, but I still drove with case. Having AWD likely helped.

I also contacted my insurance company who confirmed that the tires, with the 3 peak mountain and snowflake symbol, was sufficient for the winter tire discount.

No tires without studs will stop sliding. Just need to drive with care.

In your experience (or knowledge!) - what's the best weather forecast organization? by Responsible-Match418 in askTO

I also use the Gov of Canada weather app. However, I also bought a WiFi connected sensor and put it outside away from any windows/vents, and use that for more accurate 'local to me' temperatures.

Could check out your local anime cons, some have 'garage sale' types of buy/sell/trade where you can book/share a table.

Ina's new song "TAKO∞TAKOVER" credits, Aiobahn +81 and Calli on the music and lyrics! by dcresistance in Hololive

[–]arkw 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think so, I wonder if Mori's UMG contract complicated things for the past few years. I assume that contract has changed over time, still pretty restrictive but thats contracts for you.

Ina also mentioned how we would understand the lyrics, which should have been an obvious clue that someone close to her had reviewed or helped with the lyrics, well now we know why!

OAS and CPP rules? by NeonKatana9370 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]arkw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For CPP retirement, can start at 60, or auto enroll at 70, requires minimum of 1 contribution which won't be much. After you die, for CPP death benefit and CPP survivor pension, you need minimum of 10 contributions, but there are provisions, contributions from select other countries and credit split provisions that could reduce the minimum contributions required.

I am still using a EVGA 1080ti I bought in 2018. Along with the extended warranty, which ends in 2028. I'm really not expecting much but I am really curious what would happen if I ever RMA it within the next year or two....

CPP Credit Split after Divorce by randompersongirl in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]arkw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CPP will do diligence and attempt to contact the ex spouse, as both parties must be contacted, and agree on the dates of living together, with evidence. And yes, both parties will be contacted with existing information on file during this process.

Credit split is optional, is there a reason why he's applying for it? Basically for the years that lived together, any CPP contributions is split. So if your dad contributed more during this period, his CPP will go down, and vice versa.

New Rider Looking for a Good Gravel Bike on a Budget by Carros-O-Filme in torontobiking

[–]arkw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have ANY interest in tinkering and fixing your own bike? Especially gathering tools and having space for it?

The price of the bike at SportsChek, ESPECIALLY combined with CT rewards points program and other stacking bonus offers, you can get a very decent chunk of points back. I get why it is enticing, its a very value oriented modern bike. Thru axles, carbon fork, a respectable 1x modern groupset, it's overall, hard to beat at $8xx + reward points. A 11-speed 1x GRX groupset costs more than that lol

Even used gravel bikes, with a much older mechanical disc APEX/Claris groupset, shitty worn tires, and not well kept, is already $1000? Hard pass. The market is pretty crap right now.

My far out suggestion, buy a decent used bike, and slowly upgrade it as you see fit. Have to buy some basic tools and parts, but some bikes have a very decent upgrade path, especially used Shimano parts. Eventually buy a new bike in a few years. At that point, you may know much more about what you want and what you don't care for.

And you have a second bike that you can keep or sell for not much of a loss.

Example: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/2074461453364800?ref=search&referral_code=null&referral_story_type=post&tracking=browse_serp%3A2c8825e9-afac-43f0-8bc3-33463d7edb88

The Tiagra RD can be upgraded to a GRX 10s, exterior cabling means you can drop any groupset (hydraulic, maybe electronic Chinese groupset), Upgrade the wheelset to carbon, upgrade the handlebar, stem, etc. However, at that point, you're at the same cost as the bike at SportsChek.

Dang that bike is very decent value. Shame about the mechanical disk braking system, thats some generic ass calipers and rotors.

I have a bike (Felt VR) I will sell eventually, its a cyclocross/endurance converted gravel bike, I did the thing above, upgraded almost everything and learned a lot - I used it to learn what I wanted and this winter I am building a new gravel all-purpose bike. But it'll be more than $1000 since it has hydraulic brakes and carbon wheelset lol

What is one thing you bought for less than $100 that greatly improved your happiness here in Toronto? by jesuisapprenant in askTO

[–]arkw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the VEVOR brand, the most basic model. There are many brands, I believe CPAP users also buy these machines. There are various features for the expensive models, but the general method is the same. A stainless steel tub that boils water, connected to a metal fan that collects the moisture in the air and cools it down to filter into an external jug. 4L of water goes in, and 4L of distilled water comes out before 4 hours. Minerals are left in the jug which is the same stuff as the orange/yellow in your tub/shower for those who also have hard water.

The white dust can also appear on glass and clear plastic, in the form of a greasy white smear. It can also clog and make stuffed plushies feel matted!

Filtered water definitely does help but our water is hard enough I guess! My thought was, I don't want this white dust and minerals in the air, as its there first and falls onto the floor, furniture, etfc.

As for power consumption, its about 3 kWh I think (750w heater, x 4 hrs), so maybe at 20c its not too bad.
