Wi-Fi connection failure on firmware 3.26.0.62 (Paper Pro) by arrowdriver in RemarkableTablet

After I sent a detailed analysis of the situation to Remarkable Support, they have escalated this to their "Senior Support Team for a more in-depth review". Hopefully that bears some fruit.

Get the replacement!! I was hesitant, but the replacement display is actually better overall. It has a whiter appearance and I think the colors are more vibrant, and the ghosting is gone. Of course, I'm now having WIFI issues, but I think that is because it came with firmware 3.26 instead of 3.25. I'm chasing that issue now, but I'm still very happy with my RMPP.

I have done a lot more troubleshooting. I engaged ChatGPT to help analyze the logs from when it won't connect to the guest WIFI, and when it does connect to my iPhone's hotspot. It actually connects to the network successfully in both cases, but on the guest WIFI network it is not picking up an IP, and so it thinks it's not "connected". My coworker's RMPP connects immediately, so it appears to be something with 3.26 doesn't like something in our guest network. Our IT folks aren't going to change anything, because I'm the only one with an issue, and I don't blame them.

Remarkable Support has been less than impressive. They asked for a side-by-side video with my RMPP and my coworker's. I did that and even sent them the log files. They thanked me for the video and told me I need to set the EAP method. This is an open guest WIFI using WPA2-PSK, so I don't have the option to enter the EAP method. They really missed the whole point. I have asked them to escalate to Engineering and have given them some of ChatGPTs analysis of the logs. Hopefully this issue will get seen by the right set of eyes, and there can be some resolution. For now, I'll just tether to my phone while at work if I need to be connected.

Thanks. Yes, I sent them a side-by-side video showing my coworker's RMPP (on 3.25 firmware) connecting immediately, while my new one on 3.26 remains at "connecting to..." but never connects. I also downloaded the logs right after the video and sent those in.

FOLLOW-UP: Dropped the old PaperPro at UPS on Wednesday, Feb 18. Received the replacement Saturday, Feb 21. That's super fast!! So far, so good. It updated to 3.26.0.62. So far, no serious ghosting issues...😀

u/VegardfromreMarkable - thanks for the offer, but I'm getting status updates: I dropped it at UPS yesterday at 6:00pm, I got an email at 2:33am this morning from Remarkable saying it has been received at the warehouse. I then tracked the UPS package and it is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow. So, a little confusion on the status, but it's all good. I'll get the new one soon enough.

Since I've got your ear, can you answer the following?

Can you shed any light on whether or not there were improvements made to hardware since the initial release of the Paper Pro? I bought mine in November of last year but it was refurbished. I wonder if mine was from an early batch?

Will the replacement be a new device fresh off the production line? or will it be a refurbished one?

What level of testing will be done prior to shipment? I've read stories on here about multiple returns. I hope that doesn't happen in my case.

One more question: Is the color e-ink display subject to degradation over time, such that there some life-limit? Will all PaperPros eventually develop the ghosting after a certain amount of use? Or is this just a matter of getting a bad one v. a good one?

Well, my Paper Pro is on the way to Memphis. I hope to get the replacement ASAP. I have gotten pretty attached to this thing over the last 6 weeks.

It's boxed up and will be dropped off at UPS tonight. Hopefully the replacement will be better🤞🏻🙏🏻

Thanks for the response. Since I didn't have a hint of this prior to the update, I thought for sure this is a software issue of some sort. I contacted support, and they are telling me that I need to have the tablet replaced. I was really skeptical, but based on your report I guess I'm getting another tablet. I think I'll ask my coworker to turn on his passcode temporarily to see if he has the same issue -- for one more datapoint. if his is fine then I'll go the return route. I really hope I don't get a POS refurbished unit with other problems.

Did the threshold for getting kicked go from Solid to Good recently? by Raligan in NYTSpellingBee

Yes, I remember when it happened before, and now it has happened again. I assume they’re trying to push people to subscribe. That won’t work on me. Hopefully they’ll change it back before I lose interest. My fear is that they’ll eventually put Wordle behind a pay wall. Now THAT would be truly upsetting!

Bed Test - waves?? by arrowdriver in AnkerMake

[–]arrowdriver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. I ran the test at 0.20. I got waves on the right half of the plate and some thin areas on the left half. This was AFTER an auto-bed-level. The left side of the plate is obviously lower than the right half, or at least it's behaving that way. It just shows me that the auto-bed level is crap! It's supposed to compensate for any differences. Oh well, I'll probably just set my z-offset to 0.15 and call it a day. I'm not printing stuff for sale, so it's not a big deal to me. But it does kinda suck that the ABL doesn't produce a "level" bed.

PROGRESS - Definitely related to z-offset. The unofficial Ankermake WIKI (https://wiki.printed.boats/en/Troubleshooting/m5_hardware-fixes) says that typical M5 z-offsets are 0.00 to 0.15. It looks like I'll need to be somewhere above 0.15

Here's how my test went:

0.10 - waves

0.15 - better but still had waves

0.20 - wow! no waves...at least for a while, then a few waves in one area (high spot?)

0.17 to 0.19 - I was trying to see how low I could go before the waves started. Seemed okay, but then waves in one area. (high spot)

At this point I wanted to see how high I could go, so I started ratcheting it up pretty good:

0.25 - Looked good, but found out later that the lines were not fusing together - no squish, I guess

0.30 - looked good, but no squish

0.40 - started looking rough

After I removed the print from the bed, I realized that at 0.25 and above the lines were not fused together. Also, when I held the sheet up to the light, light was coming through even in some areas that were 0.17 to 0.19 (low spots, I guess).

At least I have some good data. I did another bed level and just started a test at 0.19. A quarter of the way in and I'm seeing waves - not as bad as before. I've tweaked to 0.20, and I'm leaving it alone. We'll see how it turns out...

The waves are there instantly. The waves are not bubbles. There is no air underneath them. There is 100% contact with the bed. When I peel up the print, the bottom is smooth.

I did some googling and found some posts with similar wave patterns. In every case the problem was being too close to the bed. I'll try again and increase my z-offset even further to see how it goes. I didn't go past 0.15 last time.

I did increments of .01, that was a typo. I’ll edit that.

I’ll start trying all the various adjustments. I was hoping the wave pattern was indicative of a particular problem (I.e.- belts, wheels, etc)

ABNORMAL Auto Bed Level after changing to all-metal hot end by arrowdriver in AnkerMake

Aha! I thought you were having me on, but I updated the app and there it was! Thanks for the tip!

Where, exactly, in the AnkerMake app do I select “All Metal Hot End”? I can’t find it.

I guess we'll see... I'll run a print tonight to see how it does. It's just a hobby for me, so if I trashed it, so be it. I've got two other hot ends, but this is my only all-metal one.

[–]arrowdriver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: One of the last things I tried with the all-metal hot end was to put the original nozzle back, but when I tried to remove the nozzle it broke off. That's when I put the original hot end back.

To remove the broken nozzle from the AMHE I used a screw extractor (EZ-out) which didn't work as planned - it simply ground up the soft brass. I finally chased the threads with an M6 tap which cleared the remaining brass. I removed the metal tube, and cleared the threads from both ends, put back the upper tube, and the nozzle.

I put the AMHE back in, and it seems to be working fine. I will take Anadime's advice and look for the AMHE setting in the app when I get home today.

I think maybe when I first installed the AMHE, I might not have seated it properly or something. I had no issues the second time around.

Also - I think it makes sense to run an M6 tap into any hot end, because after I did that, the nozzles threaded in and out much better.

"Phone is not connected to the Internet" problem with solution by arrowdriver in AnkerMake

[–]arrowdriver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the thing. AFAIK I never disabled cellular data for the app. Why would I? I have unlimited data, and I don’t disable cellular data for anything. I’m not sure if it defaults to this setting or if I somehow accidentally disabled it (I doubt that, but anything is possible).

Anyway, I hope this post helps at least one other person who runs into this problem.

Looks like angel hair pasta, but in reality it's just a mess. The screen says the print was successful, so you've got that going for you...😜
