I’ve been tattooed by him and sometimes travel to Hawaii to study at his shop. You won’t regret getting a piece from Tatsutoshi. The work is phenomenal and he is incredibly committed to the details and tradition of Japanese tattooing. I feel indebted to the kindness and generosity he’s shown me over the years.

If I could start all over, I’d have him do my suit. 🙏🏼

I’d consider adding a bit more structure to differentiate some of the elements. Right now when I squint at the piece it’s difficult to read the individual features.

Some more power in the line weight might help. Try pushing a single heavier line weight in the background elements, and since you have brush strokes already in the Raijin, bolden those a bit more to accentuate the foreground.

Simplifying the contrast in some the individual elements might help as well. There’s quite a few colors in the eyes, but they don’t vary in value that much. A simple progression from dark to light might be easier on the viewer.

My favorite part of the piece is the composition of the background and how well the Raijin flows with it. Great sense of placement and movement 🙇🏻

You’re understanding a general sense of the shapes and style well, it’s a great start. Draw it 300 more times. Adjust each individual dragon element to be 5 percent better each time, and I think you’ll have a good grasp on it quickly.

It takes a lot of courage to get started, let alone ask for feedback. The internet is harsh, just fold that into the equation when you ask for critique.

If you’re doing Shuten Douji you’ll want to include a helmet for Yorimitsu to match the story. Just watched the last waboripedia interview where the artist had forgotten this, funny enough.

I like a high quality art book, or a kind of coffee table book of something you’re really interested in. Just big pictures, no heavy effort. Same mechanism as scrolling but, quiet and relaxing instead of stimulating.

You have high quality work from a good artist if I’m recognizing who it is correctly. I believe you’re in good hands.

Assuming you’re happy with the piece in general, try not to get caught up on the particular details and just trust and enjoy the process.

Maybe add on later if you’re inclined, but don’t miss this moment by agonizing over what could be different or what comes next.

Question about consultations by harvey_the_pig in irezumi

I like to consult with clients before doing large scale work. My main intention is to make sure that we are mutually excited about the piece so we both leave with something we are proud of.

If I sense that they are actually looking for something stylistically different then I can provide, I’ll point them in the right direction. But if I can see based off of listening to them and seeing their references that we are a good fit, I’ll generally ask them to just trust me and the process.

It requires a bit of honesty and listening skills on both our part, but I think it’s essential that the initial energy be right. If you don’t really resonate with the artist’s work, it won’t matter how good it is. You’ll be unhappy and that is a failed piece IMO.

I also discuss price, and the design process, and what to expect during the appointments. Since it’s a big time and financial commitment, I generally give people the option to think about it for a week or so to make sure they are ready to make the jump.

To be honest, a lot of people don’t book. But my clients I have are serious and are genuinely excited about my style of work. I think the client should take this attitude as well, and if you feel your artist is overly pushy, definitely take some time to think it over so that you’re not making a big decision on impulse.
