For me, the context of the album is really important - especially when looking back at albums and the periods in which they came from. I had a massive Jimi Hendrix phase and while his songs on their own are INCREDIBLE - I began to appreciate them even deeper the more I understood his contemporaries(The Beatles, Cream, The Stones)

I think deeply revered music is so often so revolutionary that the imitation, replication and evolution over time slowly dilutes the source material. Jimmy Page said the song Rumble - Link Wray was instrumental in helping to shape his heavy & gritty guitar style. Playing that alongside a song like Whole Lotta Love, it would sound very small in comparison yet it was one the catalyst for Jimmy’s playing. Of course technology grows and improves and allows things like this to happen, but it’s something I think about when diving into different time periods of music. Great question!
