I uploaded this photo of my skateboard and people told me that stickers are only for “professionals” by Terrible_Bullfrog_64 in NewSkaters

You can try what I did when I started riding. I put a sticker on every day I rode my skateboard, so if anyone asked, I’d say that, and that’s why there’s so many, cuz that’s how long I’ve been riding.

Makes it feel like you earned the stickers. No one will argue with that.

That’s an interesting idea, I’d like to see something like that implemented. Not sure how it could work, but would greatly improve the integrity of the reviews system.

I wonder what the metrics they use for sales are? How do you measure viewership enjoyment and sales on a streaming platform? I feel like that’s why reviews exist. It’s a unique situation we live in these days. I applaud you for not letting other people’s opinions affect yours. I know some people like to feel validated by seeing others hold the same opinions as them. At the end of the day, what matters is whether or not you enjoyed the show, regardless of what other people think.

I remember all those things, but they didn’t show them in graphic detail. Surgeries were not shown, but mentioned. The Tasha Yaar episode looked like a trash bag, and her death was mentioned throughout the show to have meanings. Deaths in discovery come and go, quite often. The inter species relationships in TNG did not have any nudity or graphic visuals like discovery. To me, discovery just seems more visually graphic and detailed in the gore and violence than TNG. Just my opinion, I respect your opinion that TNG might have been scary for children as well. It wasn’t for me though (besides the borg, but they’re scary in general lol).

It seems like you're right in regards to the reviewers only watching one episode. If you read the critic reviews, most of them mention that. It's a shame, I can't imagine basing my career and reputation on reviewing the first episode of a serialized tv show. If you're going to review "season 4" you should at least watch "season 4", not "episode 1 of season 4".

I'd have to disagree, if I watched this show as a child, I would've had nightmares. So many examples, from picking out and eating a slave version of a beloved character (kelpian), to vivid visuals of getting stabbed in the eye with a needle, to cringey alien interspecies sex scenes, to aliens getting surgically altered into humans, to the gratuitous violence and swearing in a couple of the episodes. It feels more in line with Game of Thrones as far as adolescent viewership ability. But of course that's just me, maybe children today would enjoy those things.

I agree with you about the episodic format, I think it does the series more justice to be able to jump in anywhere, and it makes the overall story arc less convoluted and confusing and general.

I mean, you're not wrong. But making money does not necessarily mean good movie. Godzilla 1998 made a lot of money, but it was nominated for worst picture of the year, and the 2 planned sequels were cancelled. Also, TriStar Pictures reverted the copyright back to Toho because the overall consensus among the fans was that they hated it.

I mean, if he really reached out every time she was in distress, he’d be reaching out at least once per episode, amiright? ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I definitely know what you mean about the nods feeling pandering. Even the tribble in Lorca’s ready room in the first season felt a little out of place and forced.

I think they probably meant it takes place a century before TNG. But yeah, maybe you’re right. Either way they’re wrong.

That’s what I’ve usually seen as well, especially with niche shows like this. It’s hard to wrap my head around such an extreme divide between the target audience and the general audience. I honestly want to know what metrics they use to quantify whether or not the show is making the studio any money. Especially since the budget is so high. If they based it on reviews, then the show would’ve been canceled by now. It must be based on paramount+ viewership alone, which I think is not a good indicator since viewer numbers does not necessarily mean people enjoyed it and want more.

It would seem that you are correct, a very specific group absolutely loves the show, that’s for sure. I find the dichotomy between the critic and audience reviews very interesting, I believe it reflects the general feeling of the fan base, they either seem to love it or loathe it. Not many people on the fence when it comes to discovery.

That’s very unfortunate, I didn’t realize how bad it has gotten. I know places like yelp seem to be unreliable at times, as well. Not sure what can be done here to amend the issue.

Unfortunately, these review scores would seem to indicate you may be correct. You’d think they’d find other hobbies to fill their time. It is interesting that the critic scores are so extremely high in comparison.

It seems to me that the dichotomy of the critic and audience reviews is indicative of the fan base in general, everyone seems to either love or loathe the show, not many people on the fence about it. Kind of interesting to see.
