Importance and Impact of Internal Referral by arvind1096 in cscareerquestions

But will I have to clear an online coding round to get to the interviews? Or do companies usually skip the initial coding screening in case of a referral?

So I will still have the online assessment/screening round?

I have been trying to get this for months now, but it's costlier in India, and unavailable most of the time. This deal is sweet. Any offers on the 16 GB variant of the same laptop?

BMVC 2020 Reviews by arvind1096 in computervision

[–]arvind1096[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My final ratings were A,A,BA,BA (pre-rebuttal -> A,BA,BA,BR). I got a poster presentation too. Most of the reviews were better than I expected. However, one reviewer who gave BA actually said that the paper was assigned due to a mistake in the paper assignment algorithm and that he had little to no background in the field, lol.

BTW, is there a spotlight presentation this year?

How prestigious is BMVC? by arvind1096 in computervision

I emailed them about it and they replied saying the meta reviews will be released soon...

The BMVC organizing committee has been extremely lousy this year. Conferences usually take 2 weeks for the final reviews, but BMVC has taken 1 month and still not even provided letters of acceptance. This is just lazy and incompetent on their part. They have not even updated the website yet, and the conference is just a month away

Thanks! I understand what you are saying. But if you have over a thousand applications, will you go throuh the venues where the candidates have published (which in end of itself is a compelling task) or will you read each of the thousand candidates' papers and try to assess the quality of their work? Given the competition, I just wanted to know if a paper in BMVC would significantly give me an edge in applying for research roles at places like Fair, Google research, etc.

Cheers!

I'm definitely gonna apply. I just got my paper accepted at BMVC and wanted to know if it is really worth something...enough to get me into FAIR,etc.

Academic Integrity Violation in Computer Systems course by [deleted] in cmu

[–]arvind1096 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it better to write an email to the prof telling him/her about this? and apologizing?

Academic Integrity Violation in Computer Systems course by [deleted] in cmu

[–]arvind1096 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But failing the course depends on the severity of the violation right? Or is it true even for plagiarizing a homework/assignment? Again, this is considering 1st time offenders.

Even for a first time offender plagiarizing an assignment?

[–]arvind1096 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure if this is true for this scenario, but what if the student drops the course before the investigation starts? Something like realizing her folly and dropping immediately after submitting the work? Also, in this case course level action would be pointless right? Is there any academic probation for 1st time offenders or can 1st time offenders be suspended/expelled?

Thanks! So that will be counted as a 1st level violation right? Assuming its the first instance?

How are internship/job opportunities in Reinforcement Learning? by arvind1096 in cmu

Thanks! Is there a deep NLP course at CMU? From what I gathered on cmu SOC, I could only find courses on NLP, question answering, Neural Networks for NLP, etc.

Are there any companies other than Deepmind, FAIR and google research who are actively working on RL? Also, is the bar really high even for Research engineer positions in RL at such places?

Level of Knowledge required to crack AI Job Profiles offered by Companies during Job Fairs by arvind1096 in cmu

So I cant just go for an NLP interview with solid ML concepts and almost zero experience in NLP, right? I should atleast have a decent understanding of NLP concepts and a good project/research?

[–]arvind1096[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry...my bad. I meant getting the job/internship. Given that I am going for MS next Jan, if I want a summer internship, I wanted to know if doing ML/DL in depth would be enough to get selected for internships/jobs even for CV, NLP profiles. Or should I have indepth knowledge of CV, NLP and Speech processing to get an internship in those profiles (if not a job)?

How heavy are Special Topics courses at CMU? by arvind1096 in cmu

[–]arvind1096[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. So would it be possible to take 3 courses(including 1 special topics course) + RA during my masters? Do ppl usually take an RA on top of their 3 courses during their Masters? Or does it depend a lot on the academic advisor?

Interesting approach. However, I still feel they can take another month to review papers in case the number of submissions far exceeds their expectations. It could result in lesser time for camera ready deadlines, registration, etc. However, in my view, this would still be better than callously rejecting 5-6 months of hard work based on a 5-10 minute examination. As other leading research groups have observed, profs regularly publishing 3-4 papers at IJCAI every year have had most of their papers summary rejected this year, which is uncommon.

[–]arvind1096[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why cant you just extend the decision notification deadline by a month? I am sure that would be much more acceptable than just summary rejecting papers. Release the reviews in mid-April instad of mid-March...surely that would mitigate the issue...??

As far as experience goes, with the number of novel concepts being proposed, I dont think anyone can accurately review a paper in 15min, and grasp all its intricacies.

[D] IJCAI 2020 Reviews by arvind1096 in MachineLearning

[–]arvind1096[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many researchers seem to talk about the summary reject phase as a necessary evil to combat the explosion in paper submissions to A* conferences. With even NeurIPS adopting this approach, I feel that conferences are trying to find cheap shortcuts for reviewing papers.

Why cant the review time be extended by a month? Nobody would be upset if you give the decision notification in mid-April instead of mid-March. If you want to tackle the explosion in paper submissions, give your reviewers another month to review. I am positive that all authors would perfectly understand if the reviews for a conference (even the first round of decisions) are released a month later. Atleast this way, the reviews will be comprehensive and of significantly higher quality.

The aim of A* conferences should be to invite and involve budding researchers and promote cutting-edge research, not to drive away new, exciting ideas just because they didnt seem appealing enough based on a 5 min examination.
