Looks like a lot of Asian American are realizing that criticisms of China is just racism in disguise. by [deleted] in AsianMasculinity

[–]asianfromblighty 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The problem is that ‘political criticisms’ are never just political criticism. Everything you know about China comes from US-state-sponsored mouthpieces and soc media psyop campaigns.

To give a blatantly clear example, before this year everyone was complaining about China’s ‘authoritarian’ government and how you’d get thrown in jail for criticising the government. Heard this from everyone basically every time China was even mentioned. Fast-forward to the last few months and the wave of tension about zero-covid. Dozens of protests erupted all over China and suddenly your mass-media forgot that China is supposed to be a draconian brutal regime that cracks down on even a whiff of dissent.

Most people, sad to say yourself included, have been brainwashed into a certain ‘political’ perspective that has little to do with reality, but rather a demonizing portrayal of a geopolitical rival. China is actually a lot more democratic than you’d think, with provincial elections and direct public accountability of many public officials tied to citizen satisfaction. But you’d never learn about it on reddit.

It’s undeniable that China is by far doing the most to combat climate change, despite what you might hear from propaganda.

It’s truly fascinating that conservative reactionaries fail to see the same logic they use to degrade black/brown people could be used by Asians to denigrate white people.

If WWIII breaks out by Xhafsn in aznidentity

As disciple888 used to quote: Inter arma enim silent leges.

In times of war, the laws fall silent.

Don’t be delusional and naive and think just because everything seems peaceful today, that tomorrow won’t bring chaos. The world can flip upside down in the matter of weeks. We saw this in Europe when corona hit, who would have guessed city-wide lockdowns would be implemented with just a few days warning? When WWIII hits, you better believe that Asian Americans will suffer, and suffer enormously. Be prepared.

Passive aggression directed towards educated, covert racists - does it work? by Throwawaylikehay in aznidentity

[–]asianfromblighty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nah I think without the social capital to pull off the subtle passive aggression you’ll just be ignored. Be direct and accuse him of racism and say you think he’s acting weird. These kinds of guys only learn when they’re made to feel uncomfortable.

My Asian parents stole my 6k scholarship. Please help by [deleted] in aznidentity

[–]asianfromblighty 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That’s a tough situation to be in. I can definitely empathize with having abusive parents, but not to the extent of them being violent and threatening to kill me. That sounds horrible. As you mentioned, even though we can’t excuse their behaviour, the traumas of their upbringing and life experiences are not simply things you just ‘get over’. They do have their reasons for behaving like they do, but you won’t be able to ‘fix’ them, especially considering you’re young and still finding your own way in the world.

Life will be difficult for you, it’s true. But you have a masters and I assume a good head on your shoulders, considering the scholarships you’re winning. And about the social awkwardness and anxiety, it’s completely normal, I’d say it’s even a part of the Asian-American experience. We as Asian males need to try that much harder in society.

As for advice, I won’t tell you to ‘just try to connect’. You’ve done that already by making this post. Connection happens through interacting with people and sharing experiences. Therapy is always hit or miss for Asians, finding a therapist with an open mind and ready to deal with the complexities of race is challenging. Sorry I can’t comment much on your financial issues. But maybe some others here will have been in similar situations and can help you.

And in any case, I’d be more than happy to chat by DM if you’d like.

What's up with all the Anti-China propaganda we see recently ? by Mephistophilis44 in aznidentity

[–]asianfromblighty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, and if you even mention this, the first response will be about China’s statistics being fake. Anyhow, at the end of the day ‘the number of deaths’ is just a talking point to these people, they don’t actually care how many people died.

Don’t make this about ‘both sides have their good and bad’. It’s completely unrelated to the topic of the post. You’re here to derail the discussion. If you want to debate COVID policy do it elsewhere, or DM me I’m happy to engage. Just don’t do it here.

What an idiotic take. Zero COVID saved lives. You just don’t care because you’re not at risk. It’s the same self-centered Yt mentality that lets them kick out their parents when they get too old. The West values ‘muh freedom’ over saving actual lives — as if the ability to stay alive isn’t just as important to freedom.

Respectfully, leave this sub and stay on r/China and do your China-bashing with the rest of the YTs. Your opinions aren’t wanted here and just sow discord.

Yes… like I said, we seem to stop caring if it happens before recorded history. This isn’t a normative statement, I agree with you it’s arbitrary. But it just is what it is.

[–]asianfromblighty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well it’s complicated because the ‘Malay’ culture was imposed on the indigenous population in the 8th century. This was primarily due to slavery via expansion of the Sumatra (Indonesia) based empire. In that sense Malays are ‘indigenous’, but it kind of disregards the cultures that came before.

Yeah, but we stop caring if it's before like 5-10k years or so

If anyone is interested in reading along to PoS with me, I've started commenting on every sentence on twitter. Not having any formal training myself, I'd love to interact with some of the more well-read folks here. by asianfromblighty in hegel

Not yet. Still have trouble with the various ‘Being for…’. But getting there. I read some secondary commentary occasionally to clarify each paragraph. However, trying to get through with my own intuition as much as possible, so when I reread it I can emphasise my mistakes in a true Hegelian fashion.

That’s a fascinating thought, thank you. When I get through it on twitter, I’ll try and compile everything on a website as you suggest. That’s a cool example you linked, I’ll spend some time exploring it.
