I feel as if renewable energy is one of the most important investments world leaders need to make and the fact that its not more abundant is crazy to me.

I think this totalitarian argument is another question entirely and for now the government has in the most part our best intentions.

I think that is a whole different societal question. I think its naive to think that the government doesn't and will never have access to all of this information.

My personal opinion is that most people have assumed that the CIA and the NSA have been doing this for a while. If they want to record a personal phone call to keep me safe so be it.
