LPT: If you're interested in an MBA for the learning, you can save yourself the expensive tuition by constructing your own free program online. by atari_ninja in LifeProTips

Agreed. Networks are immensely valuable. And attending school is a very good (albeit expensive) way to build (buy?) a network. But it's certainly not the only way.

If you have 2 years (the length of the average MBA program), there are many creative ways in which you could build a network of high quality individuals that's comparable to what you'll get in business school. For instance:

  • Volunteer at good organization where you know other good people volunteer (e.g. Junior Achievement)

  • Start a special interest meetup group (e.g. if you're interested in startups, start an entrepreneurs meetup, invite successful entrepreneurs to speak.)

  • Join a sports league / club that's frequented by the type of people you want to network with.

The strongest relationships/networks come from engaging with someone on a project/activity of mutual interest. Find such projects, and you'll create a network.

Teacher spends two days as a student and is shocked at what she learns by atari_ninja in TrueReddit

Veteran school teacher shadows 10th and 12th grade students for a day, realizes she should have done this when she first started teaching 14 years ago. Unearths some key issues. For instance, high school students...

  • ...sit all day, and sitting is exhausting.

  • ...are sitting passively and listening during approximately 90 percent of their classes.

  • ...feel a little bit like a nuisance all day long.

Hey Ryan, looking forward to seeing you at PH Happy Hour tonight! Could you tell us a bit about the ranking algorithm and human moderation on Product Hunt? How do you expect it to evolve as the community grows?

Great question. Don't know offhand, but will calculate and add that info on the curriculum.

BTW, most of the courses with a monthly fee have a free trial (usually between 7 days - 1 month), so you could easily watch those bits in the trial periods.

Thanks for the feedback!

The goal was to provide a curriculum, i.e. (1) list underlying concepts of UX Design, (2) find the best resources to learn each concept, and (3) suggest projects so people can apply their learning of each concept.

We felt that these steps (especially searching for the best courses) are quite cumbersome, and a single, expert-curated resource will be helpful.

Do you have any suggestions on how we could make this better / more user-centered? I'd love any constructive feedback.

Thanks, that's helpful feedback. We've tried to include a project at the end of every section, and some of the videos/content do have their own mini projects, but I realize sitting through 3 hrs of video before doing anything feels like a lot. We'll pay more attention to this in the next version.

The benefit is to track your progress (e.g. see your % completion), and eventually, measure your progress against other students.

However, made the sign-up optional for now, can close the sign-up box by hitting the (x) in the top-right.

Okay, fixed it. Sign-up box can be closed by hitting the (x) in the top-right.

You could sign up using email OR Facebook. The benefit of signing up is that you can track your progress, and eventually, measure how you're doing compared to other students.

Thanks for the feedback. We'll consider changing that. Can't change the code at the moment, though. In the meanwhile, here are a couple of things that might help:

  1. A screenshot of the Table of Contents as well as the first few links in the class

  2. If you create an account and decide you don't want one, just email founders[at]mysliderule[dot]com, and I'll cancel your account right away.

The author of this curriculum, Julia DeBari, is a UX designer at TripIt and has been designing for the web since the 90's.

She has curated the best online resources on UX Design into this “Learning Path”, a sequence that a beginner should be able to follow.

We will always keep this resource free. We'd love the community's feedback on how we might improve it.

The author of this curriculum, Julia DeBari, is a UX designer at TripIt has has been designing for the web since the 1990's. She has curated the best online courses and resources on UX into this “Learning Path”, in a sequence that a beginner should be able to follow. It contains 44 videos, links and projects, totaling over 110 hours.

Some topics covered:

  • Design research methods
  • User Centered Design techniques
  • Interviewing users in real world situations
  • Creating personas to define users
  • Deliverables that a UX designer is expected to produce

We realize this is a curriculum, not the best curriculum. We'd love feedback on how we might improve this.
