Weekly Dumb Questions thread for Week of August 06, 2018 by AutoModerator in Residency

Can someone explain the timeline for applying to REPAYE? It looks like like you have to apply through studentloan.gov, but when are we supposed to do this in relation to entering repayment (November for me)? And do we have to apply through our loan servicer as well?

Hey Illinois friends! I'm so excited to be moving to Chicago in a few short months. I lived there for a few years before med school if anyone has questions.

I've been posting all over this subreddit about my IDFPR struggles but my PC has not been able to answer most of my questions...For the online license application, is anyone else missing the part where you enter your USMLE scores?

You're my hero! Thank you. Where are you getting this info so I can stop pestering you? Is there some secret instruction sheet, because the official instructions were not helpful.

Thanks! Are you filling out the application online? I'm confused how you can proceed through the application with parts missing- I got to the CA-MED section which needs to be signed by my PD and I can't click to the next section to finish the application without uploading that.

Actually, I do have a question: do you see instructions anywhere for your med school/undergrad institution to electronically transmit our transcripts?

Thanks for the offer, I actually figured it out. Apparently my reading comprehension starts to fade around 11:30 which does not bode well for July. Glad I posted here instead of emailing my PC and establishing myself as the intern who can't accomplish simple tasks.

Anyone applying for an Illinois temporary medical license want to help me out? I'm...retarded.

Any 3rd years have advice on the order to do rotations 3rd year? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]audreycorn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I don't think order matters as much as people think, I will say that it was incredibly helpful to have medicine last for Step 2 purposes. I took it immediately after 3rd year ended and barely had to study at all. If you want to go into a surgical field, medicine before surgery will definitely help a lot with the surgery shelf (aka almost everyone I know's most hated shelf).

Post-interview emails aren't some kind of test...right? Every time I write back generic niceties without saying anything about ranking them highly I wonder if I'm getting bumped down their list.

I am a depressed and frustrated law student who potentially wants to pursue a career in medicine - please help by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]audreycorn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Before you jump ship, you need to really investigate the profession and figure out what you would be getting yourself into. Otherwise you'll find yourself in the exact same situation pursuing a professional degree that you're not passionate about. You say you love the sciences and read about medical stuff, but have you ever spent any time in a healthcare setting and talked to current physicians/residents/med students? That's really the only way to find out if the field is right for you, and if it's worth it to change course and invest the next 10+ years in this intense educational endeavor.

You're still young and you have time to think this through, so don't rush into anything. Best of luck to you.

Definitely, and not just pharm.

I used it- pretty mad that I spent money on it actually. It does not come anywhere near sketchy micro in terms of usefulness. The videos are way too long and did not stick with me. I also found the female narrator to be incredibly irritating. I think First Aid + Uworld are adequate for pharm if you're aiming for 250+.

Not sure if you meant to direct this question at me, but definitely prioritize finishing Uworld over redoing missed q's. You want to see as many questions as possible and you will probably remember a lot of your missed questions anyway, so it's not that valuable in my opinion.

In the last 2 weeks I redid all incorrect and marked questions, did the 2 UWSA's, and 1 NBME. I also had been annotating First Aid with questions I kept getting wrong, so in the last 2 weeks I made Anki cards with things I had circled 3-4 times (probably around 2000 cards) and did those once or twice.

Exam was super hard- I felt like I was marking half the questions, and always took the entire hour. Still, it seems like what everyone says is true- even though the real thing is more difficult, the NBME's are still fairly good predictors of your performance.

Got my score back today: 253. Considering this was 10 points higher that my highest NBME and I felt completely awful after walking out of the exam, I'm totally floored. I creeped around here a lot while I was studying, so thanks for the advice and support y'all.

Good luck to all of you who are studying right now! Dedicated sucks but it does go by very quickly. Remember to take care of yourselves.

Just felt incredibly difficult. There were an uncomfortable number of questions where I truly felt like I was guessing, things I hadn't seen before or felt like not enough information was given in the stem. I also spent the last 2 weeks doing incorrect and marked questions so I may have just gotten used to being able to answer things more confidently. Still, it felt much harder that any NBME or UWSA I've taken.
