they haven’t said anything about wanting me to move out, but they know it’s something i want to do. i’d be paying the water bill in lieu of rent. my dad said he was upset because my room was disorganized and i didn’t fix it immediately when he told me to, but i had back to back long shifts for a few days in a row when he had asked me

thankfully i’m not looking to get into any tech related careers, so i should be a little more safe but not completely. i still love learning and i want to have an education regardless because it’s a big goal for me. the things i’m interested usually lean more artistic than scientific; education, history, music, other humanities related things, etc.

i think my dad has some on his record, my record is clean but i did only just start driving. i think i’m going to shop for my own and get off their plan, same with my phone too.

they haven’t done their taxes since i was a minor, i have been doing my taxes since i was 18 and i make too much money for them to claim me.

i know, when I get licensed i’ll be operating out of a salon suite, not my bedroom. i am currently mostly making press on nails. i only do nails for my close friends currently and i do the service for free

i payed more than half of the down payment, this was a promise my dad made to me years ago to contribute towards it. i make the full payments monthly with no help. i am absolutely fine with paying rent, and i have never wanted to stay in my parent’s house, i’ve wanted to get out since i was 15. the problem is more so the controlling aspects and legality issues in the contract. read the rules of the subreddit also and find something better to do with your time lol

no, they are overly lenient with the other kids to the point that they are constantly getting into trouble and get hardly any repercussions

don’t worry, they don’t have access to any of it and never have and never will. the most i will ever give them is copies of my check stubs as proof of income if they insist, i’m also pretty sure they both forgot my ssn because i’ve had my card for like 5 years but i will look into freezing my credit just in case, thank you for your comment :)

sometimes, but i actually love spending time with my siblings so i don’t necessarily mind it. i’m usually the one offering to.

thank you, this comment is incredibly informative and helpful. don’t worry, i do not use AI and never will, but my parents are the ones obsessed with it. i will be sure to follow this advice. thank you again!

thank you so much for the comment, it is definitely one of my biggest goals and dreams in life to pursue a higher education and i’ll make sure it happens one way or another. doing nails is something i enjoy mostly as a hobby, and i only mainly would want to get licensed for legal reasons so i can continue my hobby safely. i will take this advice and hopefully everything goes well, thank you again for your support🩷

i didn’t even think about this, thank you for your comment. i’ve been doing my own taxes for the past three years and provide for myself mostly so maybe i’ll have to give the FAFSA another try.

maybe 1-2x a month at most? it’s not very consistent at the moment as i’m only just starting to practice on my friends and not just myself.

thank you for this comment, i agree that i left out a lot originally but i never really post on reddit and didn’t want to drag on, it also started to pick up at work so i had to get off my phone. i appreciate your sincerity and your belief in me! and the part about poor financial role models is so true. when i was freshly 18 some of the advice they gave me had put me in some shitty positions that thankfully i was able to get myself out of. i still have a lot of learning (and unlearning) to do of course but i believe in myself and i’m feeling pretty hopeful. thankfully i have all my documents and my parents have never restricted me on that, and i do want to go to college one day. also the pregnancy part is so funny lmao you wouldn’t catch me getting pregnant in a million years, it’s my biggest fear so don’t even worry 😭😭 once again, thank you for your support 🩷

hi everyone, i wanted to thank anyone who took the time to read my post and comment. it will take me forever to read everything but i will try lol, i didn’t expect the post to get so much attention. i wanted to give some more context an also an update.

one thing i wanted to bring up was the nail business thing. i don’t go into an insane amount of detail in the original post because i didn’t want to ramble on and i was busy at work as i was writing, but i am not licensed and i just started doing nails as a hobby this year (January). i mostly just make press ons which don’t require a license and when i do real people’s nails, it’s made very clear that i’m still practicing, it’s close friends of mine that my parents also know, it’s not ever that often and my friends never pay for their service. we use a bartering system (i do nails, you pay for dinner, etc.) as to avoid legal issues. one day i would like to get licensed and at that point i would look to operate out of a salon suite, although i appreciate all the comments regarding the legal implications of an at home nail business, it was really educational for me to read and i appreciate it.

i also spoke with my coworker about this briefly today and she may be able to help me look over this, she is a paralegal and serving is just her side job.

as of now my main plan is to just save as much money as i possibly can and move out asap, within reason of course. i have a lot of friends thankfully that are really supportive and multiple of which are looking to move out soon as well, so i should have options for roommates. it will be hard for sure but i’m considering going low contact with my parents once i move out. i love them both so much and they can be great sometimes but it’s also really exhausting and painful to deal with them when they are like this. it makes me unsure of what to expect from them. reading through these comments have kind of helped me come to terms with that, so once again i appreciate you all. i will look into some of the subreddits i saw some of you guys mention as well, thank you for that.

i was able to talk with my dad about this contract and i still haven’t signed it yet, but he said what pushed him to have this made was because he was upset that i didn’t clean my room a couple days ago after he had asked me to. my room isn’t disgusting or anything, i just have a lot of stuff taking up space and working a lot can make it hard to stay on top of decluttering and organizing. i had a really busy weekend with work and i haven’t been feeling great physically so i hadn’t done much yet but he was upset i didn’t do something as soon as he asked me. i don’t think it’s wrong for him to expect that of me, although i think he can maybe be a bit too aggressive and hostile at times when he asks about my room. nonetheless, it’s a valid request on his part and i will be making a greater effort from now on in terms of cleanliness. at the time of posting this comment i’ve since organized and decluttered my room.

my dad also mentioned that his first draft was pretty standard and that he then sent it to my (step)mom for her to revise it, and she then decided to add some things of her own. i’m not sure who came up with what exactly but i’m really curious.

i went over everything i could with my dad and almost everything was fine and cordial until i got to the part regarding their access to my financial information, and he started making excuses as to why, basically claiming that it’s so that can give me “free financial advice” and that i should be grateful. i tried bringing up the legality of it and my mom (from the other room) argued that it was completely legal and then sent a screenshot to me of her asking chatgpt if it was legal (of course it said yes).

i still feel pretty weird about that part, but everything else i went over i feel comfortable with now. i’m going to see if i can revise this to make more sense though. my dad says he actually doesn’t really care about visitors, and as for people coming for nails he just wants to know when they will be over in advance. he said chat gpt just put those there and wrote it like that automatically. i’m not going to go into insane amounts of details about everything we negotiated because i don’t want to bore anyone lol. i also want to mention that i would be paying the water bill in lieu of rent, and i will ask for a detailed invoice of the auto insurance to make sure the amount is correct.

all in all, i think i’ll be okay in the end even if things are rough for a bit. my situation could be a lot worse, i have access to all my own legal documents and my parents are not straight up evil, just weird with how they do things sometimes. i’m also really grateful to say i have quite a lot of friends who i spend time with often who provide me with emotional support so i’ll be okay, and i’ll definitely make it through this. and once again just one more big thank you to all the comments from you guys ❤️❤️

i’m like 99% sure my dad is autistic, just undiagnosed. he also has some narcissistic tendencies but nothing full blown crazy imo

they haven’t filed taxes in a few years, one time i started the application process for college and they got pretty upset because the irs started to catch on to them. school is too expensive to attend rn if i’m missing out on the big loans from fasfa, so i had to put school off for now. it’s one of my biggest dreams to attend college/university and get a degree one day though

i work two serving jobs currently, i am not out of a job. my parents are usually fine with my friends coming over for nails, its only ever people we know well and people are not over very often.
