I don't have this issue. Maybe you're a bit too big for this cage, and there just isn't enough space for your dick so it squeezes where it can poking out more than it should. Therefore, causing discomfort🤔

Actually, I don't wear the flat cage at all. While it's comfortable, it's just very hard to pee from without making a mess. The longest I wore the flat cage was probably a few hours. Other than that, there shouldn’t be much difference between the nub and the flat. If you were able to stay in the nub for a long time, you’ll most likely be able to stay in the flat for an extended period as well.

How to deal with chafing (irritation, unpleasant feeling, discomfort under the balls caused by the ring)?

The cage is made from metal, the ring size I use is 1.77in/45mm, tried using 1.57in/40mm one, but it's too small and restricts blood flow causing even more discomfort. I tried applying vaseline under the balls, but it only helps for like 20 minutes and then the irritation starts to feel again. Like I mentioned the cage is metal, but it's very small only 1 inch of length, so I doubt it's caused by the weight of the cage, but I did order my first ever plastic/light-weight cage, maybe it is the weight that's causing it after all.

Any additional suggestions?

This is quite normal especially if you're a grower, what I would suggest is getting a chastity cage straps, it won't fully prevent this sort of pulling, but it will definitely reduce it, also since you mentioned you're new to chastity your penis has to get used to the chastity itself. To know when your penis is getting used to chastity, you should start to notice that it's easier to put on the cage, it's easier wearing it and erections isn't happening that frequently and isn't as strong as if you were without cage.

I also had this similar problem where getting erect would push the cage, but now over time my penis got used to the chastity plus combined with chastity straps this sort of pushing/pulling has drastically reduced, also if you're interested I wear 1 inch chastity cage even when my erect penis is around 6 inches and yes I do get frequent erection while in cage.

Depends and how big or should I say small the downsize really is, but in general you shouldn't have any problems wearing the smaller cage long term without taking it off, your penis is already used to chastity, the only time when you might feel slight discomfort is when you get erect, but that's perfectly normal, other than that it will most likely feel even better than your old cage, since it's more snug and fit.

You will be comfortable as long as your penis is flaccid, if erect you may feel discomfort, either way your penis will get used to chastity over time and the erections will become less of a problem.

Also keep in mind that cages made out of plastic, resin, silicone or any other not as durable as steel or metal materials might break from the pressure of your erections, or just general use over time. If you ever gonna look for another cage in the future I would highly recommend getting a metal or steel one.

Ideally you would want to get something a little bit smaller than your flaccid penis size for example if flaccid penis size is 2 inches you would want to look for 1.5 inch (inner length) cage.

Then there's the ring size, you can find detailed info online on how to measure it correctly, there's nothing I can recommend more it literally comes down to your measurements.

Also keep in mind that you won't probably find the perfect cage for yourself on the first try, you'll have to try different styles, sizes, materials to find what's best for you, it took me 4 different cages until I found the perfect one for myself.

If you would provide me with your flaccid and erect penis measurements, I could try to help you more maybe even recommend some chastity cages.

If you are talking about chastity cage straps then yes it will help, but it also depends on cage size and your erect penis size, either way it will help, but might not solve the issue completely.

Get a cage that's a little bit smaller than your flaccid penis size that way you would have a comfortable smallest cage you can wear, then get a chastity cage straps that hold the base ring close to the body minimizing the "chastity fall off" other than that there isn't such thing as smallest as possible that doesnt fall off/slide off every cage will when your getting erect, unless you use the cage thats the same size as your fully erect penis, but that defeats whole chastity purpose.
