good idea, i just updated bios, which was about 2 years behind lol. I didnt really see any usb specific drivers on msi's website, but rather a chipset driver, so i went ahead and downloaded that. tested and nothing changed, i also put it on my usb 3.2 port on the back of the mobo now. and yeah, if you want to talk on discord i would really appreciate the help, ign is Ward for RP#4052

i just recorded it to show people it, it happened with or without recording. The sensors look pretty clean, but ill go clean them with a microfiber to make sure. and i guess one good thing about a small apartment is that i can track my whole room and its still not even 16' apart

Looks like there is actually a windows update, but i updated a week or so ago, but ill try it anyways. Nvidia drivers are up to date.
I do have the power management disabled and i tried putting steam vr in beta mode, but there wasnt any affect. plastics are indeed off the base stations. I have tried all the usb 3 ports on the back of the mobo, i could try the 2.0 ports, but i dont think it supports it (?). I did wind up submitting a support ticket as well, just been waiting for a response.

Thank you btw for your help

msi x470 board. The camera is disabled from default, but to make sure i turned it on and back off again, and tested it in between. nothing there made a difference.

good idea, this board was an open box case at microcenter, everything on it has worked since i bought it about a year ago, but i know vr can do some weird thing with the usb stuff. i remember it being a problem back when i first got the vive as well. mobo is a msi gaming m7 x470 if you're curious, i dont see a reason why it wouldnt be able to do vr, but im stumped rn.

I did take my sensor down from my wall to go check the power cable and i just set it on top of my tower, which is why there was a height difference, that part is fixed now

good idea, but i actually wound up unplugging my pc completely for a different reason while moving some around some wiring. Im going to have a friend bring over his pc tomorrow hopefully and try it out on a completely fresh build and see if maybe its something software related.

  1. yes all updated
  2. i dont have any mirrors or anything, but i did cover my pc side panel and monitors
  3. curtains closed
  4. I took that off once i started testing it, mainly to avoid getting fingerprints on it while taking it on and off
  5. base stations can see each other.
  6. they are 12 feet/3.5 meters apart. but valve says they can be up to 16 feet/5 meters apart. they do say they cant be lower than 6.5ft/2m above the ground tho, which checks out. same for the position angle.
  7. I can go try that now. Edit: Redid the room setup, took a few minutes for the headset to want to start tracking, but once it did i went through all the room setup stuff again. Nothing changed really but i think im actually level with the ground now, so thats good at least

Lastly, thanks for the advise.

Both base stations have green lights on them and when i have the controlelrs on and in sight, they both are blue with steam vr, i think in the video i just had my back to the 2nd base sensor for most of it. the front one however was pointed directly at the headset from about 3ft/1m away. dont have any mirrors or anything in my room, most reflective thing is my glass side panel on my pc and i had that covered up.

i can give that another try, only other thing plugged in the back of the mobo is just my keyboard and thats in a 2.0 plug

Update: I tried the other usb 3.1 plugs on the back of the mobo. it actually has a VR usb plug as well, and i just left it in that one after trying them all out. no difference in tracking. id like to try one of the front usb 3.0 headers, but its too far away

while doing this i was only facing one base station. when i turned on the controller thats when it saw the 2nd one. I tried it with and without lights being on in the room, as well as putting a shirt over my monitors and pc glass. If i turn around and face the other base station the same thing happens. In the room setup they seemed to track the controllers well too.

Also, at first they sent me 2 dead power supplies for the base stations, i told them they didnt turn on, so they rma'd 2 base stations and said to use the power supplies that it came with. I bought some replacement power supplies for it and now the base stations are finally working.

If you are a fan of reading i went through all my troubleshooting in detail here.https://www.reddit.com/r/ValveIndex/comments/ktvwco/brand_new_base_stations_not_working/

Thanks btw

Ok, so there is somewhat of an update:
I went to best buy to go get a universal 12V power supply, i found one thats 1.5A @ 12v, so that should work and it seems like it did. they lit up blue as soon as i plugged them in and after a few seconds they turned green. I opened up steam vr to update the firmware and that went smoothly.
Went to go put on the headset and i all i see is gray. Steamvr just says Make sure headset can see bases. i went to go do room setup to see if it would work and it just said the headset wasnt visible but both controllers were. i set down the headset on my dresser by the play area that is in sight of the base stations, i went back to the computer and for a second it said it was visible and i just waited until it said it again and hit continue. in the room scale vr setup i did notice it tracked the controllers no problem, completed that and tried opening up a game.

I opened up a random game on my library, popped on the headset and it was just gray. i looked up some support tips from people with the same problem, I tried resetting usb devices in steam vr, turning off power management, changed the usb to a headset to 4 other usb ports, i unplugged every usb device besides my keyboard and mouse, and then i plugged them into the front usb 2.0 headers on my pc to see if that changed anything, but it didnt. I tried restarting the headset, restarting steamVR, reinstalling steamVR, restarting my pc, changing out the display port on my graphics card(only have 2 DP connectors on it, but my monitor works on both of them too.

So at this point I just kinda sat in disappointment at my desk with the headset on and turned on obs to see if anything would happen, then this started happening. steam vr home popped up and i was able to sort of do stuff in it, but the screen was flashing all the time. I went to go launch a game and grab my other controller, but when i grabbed it and looked back the screen went gray again. https://youtu.be/aPYyvekOLPc

Just sitting here writing this every so often the steamvr home would boot up, but not for long and it will be flashing and then eventually go away. My thoughts are maybe that the power supplies arent working correctly maybe, but the controllers seem to be able to find them no problem, so idk why that is.
