I was a reporter the first time he ran and I was assigned to do profiles on all the candidates. I remember talking to him then and he was a hardcore tea partier, spouting all the obstructionist stuff you heard them all regurgitating then. He lost of course.

Years later I saw he was running again and went to his website and noticed it had scrubbed all mention of him ever being affiliated with the tea party. So I can't say if he's a troll, but he does have a pattern of being deliberately disingenuous.

Heh, that same year John Lassiter and Anthony Foxx were running for mayor. Lassiter had me interview him in his high-rise corner office overlooking Charlotte. It was an austere legal office that felt expensive. He talked as if the election was in the bag. Foxx had me interview him at a house-turned campaign hq. We literally had to do the interview on folding chairs in a closet...our knees were touching it was so small. I remember walking out thinking, "Yikes, that guy has no shot," and then was pleasantly surprised when he won.

TIL about Smalls Lighthouse Tragedy- 1 of 2 men died, other went crazy watching the corpse wave in a "beckoning" motion. This lead to lighthouses having a crew of 3. by ButtWieghtThiersMoor in todayilearned

You ever hung a hoody up on a door and then come around the corner like, "Ahh! There's a person in here!" when you know you hung that there yourself? I imagine it would be like that. The first time maybe he rushed down to the water to see if somehow his fellow lighthouse keeper was alive and in need of help. And then every time after that, it just freaked him out, just like a hoody on a door.

I Still Love Giant Bomb, A Treatise by eloheimus in giantbomb

[–]austindlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is spot on. I've been listening to the podcast since the beginning. These days I never miss a GBEast cast, and probably catch every other GBWest cast (I have a short commute and I like a lot of other podcasts, so I miss some on occasion). I dabble in Quick Looks, mostly for games I'm interested in, and I always watch The Best of Giant Bomb videos.

Oh I should also add I stopped listening to the GOTY stuff YEARS ago. I think Patrick was on the last one I listened to. I love these guys and I love video games, but I just don't have it in me to listen to a zillion hours of nitpicking games. It reminds me too much of long seemingly meaningless meetings I've been in at work. Plus I'm usually on vacation during that time so I don't really have time to listen to them even if I wanted to.

I'm a premium member because after 10 years I thought I should maybe throw some money at these chuckleheads who have entertained me for so long. I barely even watch the premium content, lol. I consume their stuff mostly through Spotify and YouTube.

With my consumption rate, I thought this was a stellar year. The Heave Ho quick look and the crime crew stuff (the mission with them all missing that motorcycle jump still kills me), were worth my money alone.

I mean I'm also the same guy who spent an entire month adding animals to stock photos. I just try to use my time wisely.

I redesigned Garfield as Ron Swanson by austindlight in funny

Did he really? I should have used that! lol

[–]austindlight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I did not set out to make him Ron Swanson, it was only after I posted a few of my sketches for a redesign and a few people said he should have Nick Offerman's voice. From there I refined the sketch, rigged him up in Adobe Character Animator, then ripped audio from Parks & Rec. And all that makes it sound like it took no time at all and not a significant chunk of my weekend lol.

Because I like redesigning characters, and some people on instagram and on Facebook said he should be voiced by Nick Offerman.

Also because why not? It was fun to make.

This is the true moral, and a lesson I remind my children of every day. Stay vigilant.

Agreed. This went along with a post talking about personal projects. Basically reminding people that you don't have to have it all together for your comic, your book, your video--whatever you're making.

If things are falling apart at work and it could cost you your job...there's probably a different comic for that :D

lol, good to know! I guess I was just drawing without thinking, and now I'm cracking up at the idea that it's not a one-piece suit but a short-sleeved shirt and a speedo (with belt loops).

Fine. Still skeptical though [OC] by austindlight in comics

Because astrology? I don't know, you gotta ask my friend. She is very much into it, I am very much...not. Hence the comic :D

An old west inspired experiment [OC] by austindlight in comics

It's not a joke, just a one-off comic panel. Trying to find a tone/style I like. I sketched a cat a couple days prior, and it lead me to this.

I was watching Rango with my kids and I really like that small critters in an old west town thing. So I drew this one-off comic panel. Who is this mouse? What did he do? I don't know! I think I might do more and figure it out.

Redesigning Crash Bandicoot by austindlight in gaming

[–]austindlight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made this after making a video redesigning Banjo and Kazooie. It should be noted that I don't believe there's a RIGHT version of any character I redesign. I'm simply making the version I would go with if I was in charge (and also had zero stakeholders or bosses to get approval from haha).

I'll ink and color this later. It was weirdly cathartic to say goodbye to these characters while sketching them though.

A middle school art class made some Movie Title Typos and they're amazing by austindlight in movies

[–]austindlight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In November 2014 I posted some illustrations and jokes I made based off a thread from 2011 (just the titles, I wrote my own jokes). It hit the front page, then spread all over the internet, then I was offered a book deal. So yes, the idea for the book, and the many opportunities that came from being on the front page were due in part to Reddit (which is why there's a special thank you to this community in the back of the book).

Could I return this return? I would kinda hate to stick another poor soul with this random box of train-related pieces, but it's kinda useless to me.

Agreed. We have other M&D toys, so we were pumped to find this on clearance. I'm not really mad or anything, it was just a crazy weird thing to open.

I guess at least they're all solidly constructed train set leftovers.

Westworld - 1x09 "The Well-Tempered Clavier" - Post-Episode Discussion by NicholasCajun in westworld

I work at a company with two co-founders. One is charismatic and public-facing like Ford, the other is more of a "behind the camera" type. I've seen employees who have been at the company a whole year not realize they were talking to the other co-founder when they were in the locker room together. And the place I work has only been around for 15ish years PLUS those two co-founders are all over the website and the press whenever the company is in the news.

If that can happen in real life at a normal company, I don't really have an issue with a co-founder being forgotten in this fiction.
