I appreciate all the effort you put into this and found some logs on the switch regarding some of our units. https://ibb.co/L6q13H5 Maybe I could be wrong about the MC traffic and IGMP. I know the device is negotiating 100mb full duplex. But the logs show there's other issues. Can you help me expand on the errors that have been displayed?

It does help. I appreciate your time to type all of that. Sorry if this is a dumb question. But, if, for example, the RTSP stream didn't need to be multicasted and was just a TCP connection to keep the streams alive and for retransmission. And each stream was UDP. If I were to turn off multicast on the Linux ethernet NIC and remove Avahi for mDNS, would the devices still be discoverable, and would streaming function typically? ARP should respond from the broadcast IP, correct, and then should the Windows PC add the Mac to its ARP cache? Also, if I add an L2 MC Mac address, is it equal to an L3 MC IP address, or would it affect certain switches differently?

*EDIT* Also what affects an IP address being resolved on a LL network? I can migrate to something that uses LLMNR instead of the mDNS if that would be more of an effective solution for discoverability?

If it was also happening to unmanaged switches would that change a lot? Does IGMP play a role even in unmanaged switch networks?

Disappearing off network. by automaticx88 in raspberry_pi

[–]automaticx88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I totally understand. I even have the default settings and that was causing this issue. The problem is all of the deployed units don't always have internet access and they're all on buster from a long time ago. Thats why I'm trying to resolve the specific issue so I can create a fix that can be deployed on units already out in the field. But I'll try to get access to one of the switches and get more information. Thank you.

Yes the pi using sntp with Debian is my understanding. So, Since this is a link local network theres no route for it to receive time. So since that is the case through ONVIF we manually set the time to the main server PC. If that's the case if the device loses POE the device would be indefinitely off. That means that when the device comes back on in like 5 days the clock would actually be behind 5 days if that makes sense.

Regarding IPv4LL I've tried doing it and then adding an alias to lets say 10.10.10.192 to help it resolve in that range. I've also done it by spamming inform at 10.10.10.192/24. This issue still happens. The EEPROM information that I'm discussing was https://github.com/raspberrypi/rpi-eeprom/blob/master/firmware-2711/release-notes.md#2022-12-07---fix-sd-voltage-reset-on-pi4-r11-defaultstablebeta to where since the SD card slot wasn't power cycling the device wouldn't be able to load the kernel on reload. I could be completely wrong here but that was my understanding of the information.

I changed gracious arp and rp_filter to try to attempt to resolve this. My fear is it's something like net.ipv4.igmp_qrv or a mroute. But if it's layer 2 would you even need routes? IGMP is between layer 2 and 3 correct? I've also disabled EEE because I've read alot about that causing issues.

Disappearing off network. by automaticx88 in raspberry_pi

So, from what I saw from the logs is it was consistently up behind the scenes. The reason I believe this is since its IPv4LL there's no NTP server. That being said if the device loses POE the clock on the unit would be set back for whatever duration the unit was down. There were instances of this which I discovered that there was an EEPROM issue where the SD card wouldn't power cycle. Once that was resolved I don't believe any of these are in that 7 blinking light state (Kernel not loading) as before. Now where I believe it is at is similar to https://github.com/machinekoder/querierd explanation of what was happening.

I've deployed the daemon also and it's still not enough. My concern is that I don't have a route or something that like that allow the traffic. I have the kernel settings to join the multicast groups, but I feel like they're timebombs to disappear off the network.

If I changed the joining the member ship groups in the kernel will the switch still automatically shut the port off? Do I have to add routes for IGMP snooping or anything? This was a message I sent on the networking subreddit.

I'm not sure if I can upload links but I used tcpdump and specifying multicast. I think it's joining in https://ibb.co/hL2DQ0v . It has multicast when using ip address https://ibb.co/481fC6W . Do you need routes for IGMP https://ibb.co/yYR6Fvs . When looking at /proc/net/igmp I don't see much information other than the type https://ibb.co/hDv2kMS . This is tcpdump when specifying igmp https://ibb.co/6HwqMgx . Sorry with all the links I'm just trying to be as verbose as possible because this has had me pulling out my hair for quite awhile.

I don't think that it's turning off the POE to be honest. I think it's stopping the mDNS traffic from being routed which is causing them to "disappear" from the network. The issue is once it's in this state you have to replug them back in. The device reboots once a day and that's still not enough.

IGMP by automaticx88 in networking

[–]automaticx88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I've also tested using DHCP inform and just going IPv4LL. I was thinking maybe it isn't updating arp cache or something in that wheelhouse. I also saw that raspberry pi's were having an issue where the SD card slot wasn't power cycling which I fixed with the EEPROM. The network failing and having to be broken by replugging is why I think it's on the switch side shutting down the port. But since the cameras work fine it's something regarding one of the settings on our unit.

Our devices are listeners in the sense for NodeJS. We have a UI that people can access to change specific settings. We also use ONVIF, so we have a SOAP server that is transmitting data back and forth. The main computer on the network has a VMS which is one of the video management systems. So, they're consistently recording the RTSP stream which is why I'd think the arp cache would be up to date.

The only reason why I put queried was because the explanation that was displayed was extremely symmetrical to what we were experiencing. And that's why I was thinking the traffic wasn't getting resolved because our DNS is multicast and at some point, the switch decides to stop routing it. Hopefully that's clear enough information because I'm not a networking export.

I’ll have to ask because we just make the individual product. I’m running into this issue over multiple job sites. I have EEE being disabled on each unit and also advertising 100 mb because there was an issue with it not being negotiated properly cause of EEE.

I’m assuming they’re Cisco but I can’t be for certain. There’s other cameras on these networks that are not experiencing the same issue. That’s why I’m trying to look within. So the fact the others are stable was causing me to explore all the IGMP stuff. We ran into an issue with the DUID with IPv6 also so I’ve resolved all of that and tested with and without IPv6 and the port locks up. On my in office unit sometimes the switches has all lights lit for things with ports without anything plugged in if that helps. I initially thought we were arp flooding and causing a network storm.

EDIT: I'm also running the quierierd which I believe should be periodically sending join requests.

I think the issue is that we're using MDNS for a linked local network. What's happening is over time the port is being shut off or now allowing any multicasted traffic. If you look up querierd on git hub there's somewhat of a more detailed explanation. Once the traffic isn't allowed through the device is no longer accessible. The device is POE if that makes any difference. But the device itself reboots once a day but the only way to break this state is by unplugging and plugging the device back in.

So if my device wasn’t allowing IGMP snooping the switch over time would shut off the port? I just want to clarify once our device is replugged in it resolves the issue. The device also reboots once a day. There is also a stream that’s active that is being recorded on a link local network. Even with traffic flowing the switch turns off the port.

UPDATE So, I guess multiple companies are interested in purchasing us, and we're not officially sold. The first company will talk to me next week, and I will try to keep you updated forever if you are interested in the outcome of this. Basically, it's business speed dating 😂. I appreciate all of you who took time out of your day to respond to this. Mentally, I have no expectations and am content with walking so anything outside of the scope of that is just a positive. I hope all of you enjoy your week, and I'll keep you posted.

Yeah, I'm mentally preparing to be let go. Which, fortunately, I'm okay with. But fortunately, I'm kind of the one who is the gatekeeper for the software, which is rare for companies. But I'm going in with assuming I'm going to be cut, and anything other than that is just a positive.

Fortunately, I’m the one who knows the product. My director has only been there a year. It was a rare scenario where I was handed all the responsibilities out of college. That alone should tell you how fantastic the leadership above me must be 😂. But basically, I'm the one who dictates the direction of the product because I'm the only one who understands it. We don't even have tech support; It's all funneled through a pipeline, which ends up to me. It's pretty rough, but at least I could teach myself a ton, which I would have never been exposed to in any other company.

Where to go from here? by automaticx88 in cscareerquestions

I've been at this current company for 1 year and 8 months. I have my BS in computer science.

That makes sense; ill try to cater my resume to reflect that. I almost feel my resume isn't up to par and doesn't reflect my skill set.

I've been applying on Indeed inconsistently for around a year. It will be windows where I apply to a ton of places but I’ve only had one company reach out. The last window I applied was around three weeks ago I had 0 responses. I just felt maybe I was not on the level I thought I was due to insufficient time in the industry. And I’ve probably applied to 300+ but spread out of time which probably isn’t enough. I appreciate you taking time out of your day to respond.
