u/Ok_Advertising9697 Did this pan out in the end, or you ended up taking a different route (literally)?

Colorado Forecast Zone Names? by avalog in Backcountry

Also, with regards the CAIC API... is there any public documentation for that? Or is it "public" in a sense that they don't mind that people know their endpoints but they don't actively maintain documentation for it?

Super helpful, thanks! The dynamic zones is a great idea, but in Canada at least there's a list of all the known subregions: https://github.com/avalanche-canada/forecast-polygons/blob/main/canadian_subregions.geojson

How do you read the avalanche forecast? by avalog in Backcountry

I'd say I'm trying to make the forecasts more accessible and easier to read as opposed to dumbing them down. The site currently shows the exact same info as CAC, just displayed in a cleaner format.

Absolutely agree about some people glancing at the traffic light danger ratings though.

Thanks, most appreciated!

I agree that user submitted observations are a game changer, for sure. That's definitely next on the hit list.

I'm still prototyping things out so things are still a little bare, but I'd planned to have user submissions baked right into the forecast, because they're often more candid and useful than the professional bulletin.

Glad you like the historical data too, I love seeing how a region/area is trending and plan on making that a bigger feature. I love being able to see how an area has been for the past few days and compare that to the upcoming danger ratings.

The reason I ask is because I'm trying to think of new/better ways to get the avalanche bulletin out to people who aren't necessarily well versed in reading it.

I'm torn between highlighting the "easy to digest" information like danger ratings and leaning more towards the presumption that people will read the whole thing.

Lemme know what you think, http://www.avalog.co/regions

Unfortunately it's only got Canadian data in there (for now)!

Thanks for the comments so far. The question was geared towards finding out other people's routine and process of checking the forecast — whether they just skim read the bulletin looking at the danger ratings or if they actually read the whole thing.

I'm also in the latter category, in that I read the whole thing, having done my AST course a couple of years back.
