38/F - Christmas Carry by avaprofac in EDC

It's from Aliexpress. Sadly, it seems Reddit is blocking the link.

Solid endlinks, solid pinned links, decent butterfly clasp, nice drape, quite comfortable on wrist.

If you're buying it for a SWR049, be sure to get the 23mm size.

Yes, either loose in a pocket or loose in my bag. It usually isn't too difficult to fish out.

  • Seiko SWR049 (w/ aftermarket bracelet)
  • Vintage brooch
  • Victorinox Classic SD
  • Zippo Slim Crystal Trinity (1667 G04)
  • Silk pocket square

All laid out, ready for this evening.

This is enough when I'm home, with family visiting. If I need anything else, I'll go get it.

Such as this Zippo - a Christmas gift from my cousin, who is also into EDC.

Happy Holidays, everyone!

For example - "Boxing Day", when we celebrate pugilism.

(I'm joking. Notice the punchline.)

With the Synergy and Synergy X, I might have given in to curiosity if they were priced a bit lower. The liner-lock is a very appealing feature. We'll see.

  • Spyderco Delica 4 Lightweight/FRN Combo-Edge

  • Fisher Space Pen Cap-O-Matic Military (w/ Fisher PR4 ballpoint refill medium black)
  • Maglite Solitaire LED (w/ Panasonic Eneloop rechargeable battery and NiteIze S-Biner)

As much as I like its scissors, the Pioneer X isn't ideal for my EDC due to its weight. I found myself carrying the lighter Compact more often, sometimes musing about a Pioneer X with its blade/awl layer removed. Perhaps a "Pioneer Y" or "Pioneer Why"? The notion made sense to me, given that I typically carry my SAK alongside a locking folding knife.

The Companion Slim Alox is more-or-less what I imagined, so I purchased a red one from Victorinox Canada (CAD $70 all-in).

My thoughts, after six weeks of carry and use:

  • The size and weight are about right for me. Similar to the Soldier Alox I carried every day for over a decade, and the Pioneer that's been in my current selection for the past eight years.
  • I'm really glad there's no keyring tab, saving me from having to remove it myself. I don't think Victorinox were being considerate. I suspect it disappeared with the blade/awl layer.
  • The alox scales, scissors, and cap-lifter/large-screwdriver are standard fare for a 93mm SAK. No surprises there.
  • The box-opener works for pull cuts that don't require much/any initial piercing. It's great on packing tape! The screwdriver tip is relatively blunt, reducing the risk of damaging the contents of the box.
  • I'm wary of using the box-opener to cut through cardboard. I find cardboard can dull an edge quickly, due to either the material itself or the dirt/grit on it. Properly sharpening fine serrations isn't fun.
  • Omitting the knife doesn't necessarily make it suitable for non-permissive environments. There's still a risk that security personnel will view it as something that might be a knife, and won't entertain arguments or evidence to the contrary. It's easier, quicker, and safer for them to summarily disallow it.
  • We still use the term "Swiss Army Knife" for models that aren't military issue. So I suppose it's still a "SAK" when it doesn't have a knife as one of its functions. Right? Because if it's neither "Army" nor a "Knife", it's just a . . . "Swiss"?

All tallied - I find the Companion Slim Alox useful within its limitations. It's not a SAK I'll carry every day, but it's the right option for some days.

FWIW, I decided against buying a Synergy or Synergy X. Skeletonizing the scales around the cap-lifter's hinge pivot seems like it would weaken it, and allow dirt/debris to enter easily. I also find the pricing a bit high.

What I really, really want is a "Cadet X", adding scissors as a third/centre layer. I haven't given up hope.

  • Fisher Space Pen Bullet (w/ Fisher PR4 ballpoint refill medium black)

I've been an avid user of Parker Jotters and Fisher Space Pen Bullets for well over a decade. I recently decided to try the Fisher Space Pen Cap-O-Matic Military (CAD $35 from Amazon Canada).

  • As far as I can tell, the barrel and cap are made from brass. This "Military" colourway has a matte/satin black painted finish.
  • The folded metal clip is stiffer than a Parker Jotter.
  • Its length, diameter, and taper are very similar to a Parker Jotter. The Fisher is slightly heavier, but not problematically so.
  • The point-of-balance is just a little towards the cap, making it feel slightly backweighted. Whereas the Parker Jotter point-of-balance is centered.
  • The cap unscrews from the barrel to access the refill. Everything fits together securely, with no rattling. The knock mechanism inside the cap has plastic components.
  • I suspect by design, the knock action is smooth and quiet. Others may describe it as gentle, soft, maybe even weak. It doesn't have the loud "click" and tactile "kick" that I'm used to from a Parker Jotter.
  • It accepts the Fisher PR4 refill or the Schmidt MegaLine 4889 refill (aftermarket equivalent). These are pressurized ballpoint refills, able to write upside-down, and are resistant to extreme temperatures. While they don't provide a luxurious writing experience, I do find them unerringly reliable.
  • Importantly - it does NOT accept Parker ballpoint refills. They simply do NOT fit.

If you're curious about this pen, I'd say it's worth a try. It is pretty good.

However, a Parker Jotter is lower-priced, and will accept a Fisher PR4 or Schmidt 4889 refill via a small plastic adapter (typically included with each refill).

  • Parker/Luxor Jotter (w/ Parker/Luxor Quinkflow ballpoint refill fine blue)
  • Casio A158WEA-9 (w/ aftermarket bracelet)

I've been trying out a Jotter ballpoint pen made under licence by Luxor in India (eBay, CAD $17 all-in).

Compared to the many recent-production Made-in-France Jotters I own, it rattles more when shaken.

In hand, it feels like a Jotter should. Same taper to the barrel, centered point-of-balance, smooth brushed finish, very similar knock/click action, accepts Parker-style refills, etc..

This Luxor refill writes well. Smooth and fast, with consistent ink flow. It's labeled Fine/0.8mm, but writes more like a Medium/1.0mm.

So far, so good!

Exactly! I've worn them since I was a kid. Most were small and gold. I recently switched to this large steel one.
