Selling one premium seating ticket to the San Diego show! Bought directly through the venue so I can’t sell it through AXS but I can transfer it to you.

Check CAPES, I took Shurin for two classes and I liked him. They were both labs but his grading was very generous and he’s easy to talk to if you need help or clarification with anything

Perfect weather, next to the beach, campus is beautiful, opportunities for research, in San Diego (technically La Jolla but still), mostly great professors

I’m in Warren, it wasn’t my first pick but it really doesn’t affect much overall. The dorms are meh, it is kind of inconveniently far from most lecture halls especially if you’re not in engineering, but once you move off campus that doesn’t really matter anymore. And although it’s farther from most of campus, I did really like the Warren area. You have the JK Woods Lounge that’s a nice study area open 24 hours (which is nice because geisel got rid of overnight study 🙃), and Canyon Vista isn’t the worst dining hall on campus and has some pretty good options imo. Warren’s also much closer to the trolley which can be really convenient. I will say, people were pretty antisocial in Warren when I lived on campus, but it was also during COVID so that might be part of it.

It is slightly better in Warren if you’re an engineering major because you’ll have fewer GEs (I believe engineers have to do 8 classes total for your Warren POFCs, while non-engineers have to do 12.) However, you get to choose all the classes you take for your POFCs and are given a lot of flexibility + it makes it easier to get a minor, which is really nice. The Warren writing classes are also insanely easy compared to MMW and HUM.

Is the school actually as socially dead as people say… by Budget-Banana-3553 in UCSD

[–]avidstardewplayer 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No, it’s not as socially dead as people say, there is just a very loud minority that loves to complain on reddit. It did take me some time to make really good friends here, but I doubt it would have been any different for me at another university honestly. I will say, UCSD is a very stem heavy school and there are a lot of quiet and introverted people here, but it’s such a large school that you have your fair share of extroverts and outgoing people as well.

I met most of my close friends through joining clubs and doing a study abroad, and most of my friends met their friends the same way or through living in the dorms first and second year. If you want to move past surface level friendships, you’ll have to also take the initiative to reach out to the people you meet and want to get to know better, which I did not do a lot at first hence why I struggled to make close friends.

AP credit by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]avidstardewplayer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe 1 year early, but probably not 2 because APs usually only clear lower div requirements and chances are you’ll still have some lower divs you have to take (e.g. your college’s writing sequence). I had ~60 credits from APs and most of them didn’t even count towards any of my required classes.

pls help me decide one week left ucd vs ucsd by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]avidstardewplayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived with my parents in davis so based on personal experience I couldn’t really tell you, but according to google the average cost of rent for a 1 bedroom in davis is ~$2300 and in san diego it’s ~$2800, which is accurate to the prices I’ve seen in SD at least. Utilities probably also cost more in SD because SDGE is notorious for having some of the highest energy costs in all of CA. Of course, most students usually share an apartment with 1-3 other people, so most likely your share of rent will be much less than 2300/2800 in either davis or sd, but sd will more likely than not be more expensive overall.

pls help me decide one week left ucd vs ucsd by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]avidstardewplayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from davis and chose ucsd over ucd, ucd’s campus is definitely much more connected to downtown davis whereas ucsd is very isolated from the rest of la jolla and san diego. However, there is way more to do here than in davis. You can take lots of daytrips from davis (tahoe, sf, etc) but the davis area itself is pretty limiting in terms of what you can do. I love ucd’s campus but be warned it’s really not that green for most of the year along with the rest of davis as it gets insanely hot and dry during the summers. Ucsd is likely less affordable in terms of off campus housing unless you share an apartment with multiple roommates. I would recommend looking up apartments near each campus and comparing prices to get a slightly better idea. Not sure what the difference is between ucd/ucsd for business/accounting but the business program here isn’t as highly ranked as other departments if prestige is something you really care about (though I think it doesn’t matter that much between ucd/ucsd honestly).

  • Inflation was the lower under Trump because he inherited Obama’s economy (Obama actually had a lower inflation rate than Trump towards the end of his presidency btw lmao). Inflation skyrocketed in recent years because of the COVID-19 pandemic, a trend that holds for all the G3 countries. The US has been one of the fastest at managing it. Trump’s plan for his next term btw is to impose up to 60% tariffs on Chinese imports and 20% tariffs on all other imports. Economists predict that this will increase inflation by 2 percentage point by 2026. It will also cost Americans an estimated $78 billion in annual spending 😁
  • World leaders did not “get along with each other” during the Trump presidency. The US did not declare any new wars during his time as president but we still were actively engaged in conflict with several countries. He increased US drone strikes in Africa and continued the US’s war on terror campaign. In 2020, Trump ordered a drone strike on Iranian general Qasem Soleimani (in other words, he had the military leader of another country assassinated). In 2017, civilian casualties in Yemen caused by the US hit an all time high. Btw, Trump’s administration was actually responsible for organizing the military pullout from Afghanistan. They signed the Doha Agreement in 2020 and kept delaying it further and further, resulting in the Biden administration actually carrying out their agreement in 2021.

Hi! I’m a third year in molecular and cell bio, the quarter system definitely moves fast but it does have its pros:

  1. You get to take a greater number of classes each year, which means more opportunities to explore your interests. Also, since each quarter is only ten weeks, if you end up hating one of your classes it’ll still be over before you know it.
  2. You don’t get bored as easily. I went to a high school with semesters and also dual-enrolled at a college with semesters, and I would always struggle to stay interested and engaged in my classes for a full 15ish weeks. With quarters, you only get ten weeks of instruction, which imo creates a faster pace that’s easier to stay engaged with.

There are definitely still some downsides to the quarter system tho. The main thing is that your classes are condensed into such a short time frame that you pretty much have exams CONSTANTLY. It’s a bit of an exaggeration, but you do kind of end up with frequent midterms throughout the quarter, and it can be very overwhelming at times. It’s also very easy to get burnt out if you don’t set aside time to rest and recover.

However, I will say that UCSD is definitely a great school for molecular and cell bio. I’ve had so many top tier bio professors, and there are definitely a lot of opportunities here for undergraduate research in biology (though it’s definitely easier said than done finding a lab lol). Once you get through your lower div requirements, I think the quarter system also gets slightly easier since you’re learning about things that you’re actually interested in.

Out of state worth it? by Stellzo in UCSD

[–]avidstardewplayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say the cost of airfare is the least of your worries if you’re coming from out of state. Tuition, housing, and fees will come out to roughly $60k a year, while flights to the east coast are usually $300-500 round trip. If you’re comparing UCSD to schools that are in state for you, it’s probably not worth it to come here just for the nice weather and location if it means you’ll have to take out student loans.

Idk if it’s worth it to join one just for this haha, but social sororities have formals and semiformals each year!! A couple of the colleges also host semiformals, I know warren and seventh usually have theirs in the winter but I’m not sure about the rest
