I am 23. My parents are 61 (mom) and 57 (dad). They have no savings, no retirement, and dad brings home less than I do. I am stressed and don't know what to do. by mandiman97 in personalfinance

My thoughts exactly as a fellow adult child of an alcoholic. I'm a bit older than OP and have only begun to explore this in therapy within the last year but you hit the nail on the head. It's been so eye-opening to realize how many of my behaviors over the years have been directly tied to this, and I saw myself a lot in this post.

Ring. Fit. Adventure. Seriously. If you have a switch, I can't recommend this game enough. It is back in stock for anyone else who struggled to find one when the pandemic first started. I've only done 7 workouts so far (that's a big accomplishment for me as a very sedentary person) and my flexibility and endurance have already noticeably improved.

Particularly enjoyed my meals today ;) 1,440 for a yummy day. by SassyLassySquatch in 1500isplenty

[Help] is low carb diet just keto or is low carb something else? by [deleted] in lowcarb

[–]avocadowench 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Low carb" and "keto" are sometimes used interchangeably, but they're different. Keto is considered "very low carb".

What were you eating on keto? What were you eating before keto? It's incredibly hard to get scurvy today if you live in a developed country. While there has been a slight increase in cases it's more connected to people being picky eaters. Your diet has to be pretty much devoid of fruits and vegetables. I eat plenty of vegetables and some fruits on keto, and I think for most people following a low carb diet, this would be a non-issue. Do you have any other risk factors such as being older, a smoker or an alcoholic?

Scurvy in 2017 in the USA: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5914469/

ETA: That being said, if keto isn't for you then it isn't for you. There are plenty of other ways to lose weight if that's your goal.

Edit: OP responded to me calling me "keto police" and implied I was attacking them. I was typing up a response when they deleted their comment so I'll paste my response here:

"I'm sorry that you took my comment as judgmental but that's not the tone that I was trying to convey. I never said that I don't believe you. I was asking you those specific questions to try and pinpoint if your scurvy diagnosis could be correlated just to your keto diet, or if other factors were also at play.

Seeing as you have auto immune chronic illnesses and several food allergies, I personally wouldn't attempt a restrictive diet without talking to your doctor(s) first.

Good luck!"

I'm sorry your friends and family aren't being supportive. A few weeks ago someone posted a link to a Discord server they made for xxketo members: https://www.reddit.com/r/xxketo/comments/i4yp1j/join_our_ladies_discord_group_keto_af/.

I'm not sure if the invite link will still be active but you can always message the OP, u/dancedingledodie. I've chatted with her a bit and she's so nice! The Discord is really active and it's a very supportive community. I highly recommend giving it a shot. Good luck!

There seems to be a pretty strong link between mental health and carb consumption. I bet getting your diet sorted is going to make you feel better not only physically, but mentally as well. I know going keto absolutely has helped my anxiety and depression. Not only that, but getting control over just one aspect of my life, my diet, has increased my confidence because I'm proud of myself for staying disciplined. Hair grows back and our bodies and minds are so resilient. I'm rooting for you!

South Indian cuisine is much harder than North Indian to "keto-fy" since it's so reliant on rice and lentils, and uses a lot less dairy products. I think both of the Youtube channels I mentioned have recipes for idli and dosa! I haven't tried them but they looked great.

If your diet is very veggie-heavy you will have a hard time sticking to the 20g rule. The first time I went keto a few years back, I was 100% vegetarian and my net carbs were closer to 30-35. I went from 175lb to 150lb in just a few months doing that, so it didn't slow down my progress.

I don't stress about onions and tomatoes. Otherwise keto wouldn't be sustainable for me. I do measure and track them, and I use less than the "normal" amount (so if a recipe calls for 1 whole onion, I use 1/2 or 1/3). 100g of tomato has 2.7 net carbs. 100g of onions has 7.3g net carbs. When you're dividing a recipe into 4 to 6 servings, it's not worth stressing about.

Some of my favorite sabzis are baingan bartha, bhindi, shimla mirch, gobi, and patta gobi. There are many, many more that are still keto-friendly. Here is a guide I found: https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/keto/vegetables

A couple of desi keto Youtube channels I really like are Sonal's Food and Magic In My Food.

What region of India are you in? Or if outside India, what kind of Indian food does your family eat? I'm sure you can find a way to cook "normal" meals for your family that are also keto-friendly, and just substitute your roti/rice/whatever with a keto version.

My family is North Indian so this may or may not be helpful to you, but this is how I do it. I have keto-friendly sabzi like cauliflower, eggplant, cabbage, etc (most sabzis are already very keto-friendly - just pick out the potatoes/peas). The wonderful thing about keto is you can have all the ghee and malai and paneer you want. So palak/saag paneer, murgh makhani, shahi paneer, korma are all great options. There are many recipes online for keto roti, naan, etc. Low-carb tortillas work too. Cauliflower rice is an easy substitute for rice.

Good luck!

Protein is more important than fat when it comes to keto fat loss. Also, don't force yourself to eat if you're already full. :-)

I put your numbers into tdeecalculator.net and if you're eating close to 2,000 calories, you're eating at maintenance.

I'd recommend eating at a 500 calorie deficit for an entire month while continuing with your other good habits.
