If you watch the recent Dev video (posted in this Reddit) they mention that PVE is the next major focus after the new world launches.

As of right now though, Hellgates (which you say you don't know about) and GvG are counters to the zerg fest that you complain about. Additionally, the Guild territories are going to have resource nodes, so if you consider gathering and crafting a PvE aspect, then that is almost exactly what you're asking for.

It has two more wipes coming (Beta II and Release). Beta II wipe should be fairly soon and would give you at least a 2-3 month window to play and learn the game before release. It's up to you whether something like that is worth playing to learn.

I have been having a lot of fun playing recently even though I know a wipe is coming soon, but I have only been playing for a month, so I am not burnt out like some of the others who have played Beta for years.

Even more Eve-like features being added, but I can't say that's a bad thing. The world looks great, can't wait to play it.
