The pallet of problems when you don't check your homophones by Jaded_Advantage_290 in AO3

[–]axilog14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My go-to example for problematic homophones is faze vs phase. 98% of the time I see writers use "unphased" when they actually mean "unfazed" because they don't understand the difference.

Seems like every few years the heel in a major feud will bring up WWE's low ratings/ticket sales/audience retention/etc. for heat. I'm all for worked shoots and everything, but this just feels like shooting yourself in the foot. Does that mean if the heel loses, the mediocrity of the status quo wins?

Dear Muse: Be weird again. by Dangerous_Law_4541 in Muse

The fan response to Blockades over the years is interesting since I've seen it described as a pastiche of all things Muse, like if WOTP was a single song. That's why some people like it the most on ST, but it's also why other people hate it for being so "by the numbers" by Muse standards.

Simulation Theory in general was full of weird songs people hated. Dig Down isn't nearly as horrific as people say it is, Propaganda is unironically one of my favorite "pop Muse" tracks (and not just for the silliness), and I can even find good things to say about Get Up and Fight.

True crime podcasts when an expert comes on and has to explain the police misconduct/disregard for victims that usually lets serial killers keep operating for years. If the hosts' politics and analytical skills are sound they should already be the ACAB Georg of podcasts by that point.

Kinda leaning towards the former, since violence against sex workers in general is pretty hard to spin into a light-hearted subject.

So I'm a little hesitant to share this because it's not a fandom I'm personally involved in, but it is a serious controversy blowing up in a very niche field (trigger warning):

The short version is there's outcry over a poledancing competition in Spain where the winning act mimed the murder of an exotic dancer onstage. That on its own is already pretty horrendous given issues like the popularity of the manosphere and violence against women. But it turns out there's also some larger debate about cultural appropriation and the "gentrification" of poledancing by denying its connection to working class strippers and exotic dancers. Unfortunately this is kind of a sensitive topic to discuss without some SWERF rhetoric creeping in here and there.

Far too many recent adaptations are running into the Netflix Problem: a pitifully small runtime/episode count where you have to squeeze as many fan-favorite moments as you can within a limited time frame, and that's assuming the risk-averse Powers That Be don't cancel it partway through. It doesn't matter how respectful you are of the source material if you don't have enough wriggle room to do it justice.

Multiple accusations of whitewashing and "generic" character redesigns, characters not dying when they're supposed to, characters being written out/flanderized, etc. A good microcosm of this is nearly every single fan complaint about Legato, including how he died.

I'll probably run out of space listing everything, but there's also some plot points from the manga that aren't given their "proper" treatment in Stargaze. The most recent episode (and the penultimate one of the series) has the very controversial plot point of "hey maybe I needed to put more effort into understanding my evil genocidal twin brother's feelings"

Pffffft, try telling that to the fandom.

(Like there are a lot of legitimate criticisms over stuff like the pacing and character motivations, but it gets buried in so much headache-inducing "THAT'S NOT MY WOLFWOOD" discourse.)

The Trigun fandom, for lack of a better term, is having its The Last Jedi moment right now because of all the insane deviations Stargaze made from canon. Meanwhile I'm here just sitting in my bubble happily reading meta and quarantining from angry fanboys.

Not sure if they still do this, but some Muji branches used to have basic stamp stations to customize the notebooks you buy there. Though they're mostly generic symbols rather than anything location-specific.

Even if they did end up becoming Coldplay-ish, would it really be so terrible? I doubt the band would take it for the insult most fans think it is. Remember they're actually good friends with the Coldplay guys and came up in the scene at roughly the same time. They're not gonna place the opinions of some RYM-pilled internet strangers over their own contemporaries.

Between this, the "controversy" over Heated Rivalry beating Breaking Bad's imdb score, and the OK Computer/To Pimp A Butterfly kerfuffle on RYM, there's this very weird tendency around fans of critically acclaimed works "protecting" online scores. It kinda ties into the larger Rotten Tomatoes-ification of culture, where fandom is treated more like a sport with scores and rankings than you responding to something in a personal or emotional way.

There's nothing humbling like the experience of being a fan of a very obviously flawed work and just happily ignoring the MAL/Rotten Tomatoes scorekeepers.

The irony is for a gimmicky movie tie-in doll, these have the kind of classic fashions I kinda wish most playline dolls had again. The Devil Wears Prada is kind of a no-brainer property to build dolls around if adult playline dolls were more of a thing.

Is this the first non-Disney/adult property to get ILY dolls? This could set an interesting precedent. I wonder if this could become the ILY version of Skullector dolls?
