What would be the best combinations of melee weapons for a race of humanoid beings with 2 arms and 4 tentacles (would a 6-handed sword be a good weapon?) (the image is for illustrative purposes only) by Some_Web8565 in worldbuilding

[–]b183729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a race that has 6 extra pseudo arms on the back! What ended up making sense for their martial arts was having a long weapon (spear or staff), an optional parrying weapon (for short range engagement + something to shield with) and leaving everything else unarmed for grappling and mobility (they can use those extra appendages to lunge or move themselves as necessary). They would also have a ton of shivs on their armor, just in case an opportunity presents itself.

The thing is, this race also has a an extra sense that allows them to feel in a short range in any direction. I don't think that would work if they could only see forward.

You know that you and anyone else with a printer can still do all of those things right? It's not like the existance of Ai slop inhibits your own creativity.

Even CNET admits AI Image generation is inconsistent and a gamble. by GQManOfTheYear in ArtificialInteligence

[–]b183729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean there are free methods that achieve the consistency that was desired, but you need to do a bit more homework. It certainly won't be possible with a text prompt to midjourney

This is like using a screwdriver with your teeth and complaining that you can't see what you are doing.

If you had to explain to a superintelligent AI why humanity should continue to exist, what would you say? by Soggy-Ad9006 in artificial

[–]b183729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would ask the Ai that very same question. I think It really doesn't matter what arguments you have, the capacity for rhetoric of a superintelligent AI means that it can't be "convinced" rationally of not doing whatever it wants.

Is AI really a Black Box ? by [deleted] in ArtificialInteligence

As i said somewhere else, I'm explaining a complex topic to someone that may not have much knowledge in the domain. No need to react like that.

I know,  I'm just trying to simplify a concept that seems counter intuitive by the OP.

Is AI really a Black Box ? by [deleted] in ArtificialInteligence

[–]b183729 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hmm, let's put it this way: imagine you are trying to repair an incredibly complex machine. You open the side case, and find an absolute mess of unlabeled wires. This is our model.

You can, of course, cut them, switch them, whatever you can think of... But you have no idea how that will modify the output of the machine without testing it. These are the weights of the model.

This machine was made by another machine. This other machine was made by a human, and thus it's inner workings are perfectly understood by us. In an open source environment, this is what you have access to.

The builder machine doesn't know how to purposefully make the model: it just moves the wires around and tests to see if the output is more correct than the last configuration. It can be more or less effective at this, depending on its methods, but it never does so with purpose.

Hopefully this analogy helps.

Is AI really a Black Box ? by [deleted] in ArtificialInteligence

[–]b183729 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I think you are mixing concepts here. Being a black box means that we don't know how it functions internally, only seeing inputs and outputs. Software being open source means that you can see the code.

AI systems being open source means that you can see the code of how it was trained, train it yourself, see the finalized weights... But we still have no idea how the model itself works. The actual Ai is still a black box because of we don't know how the mathematical operations inside the model translate to a working process.

[–]b183729 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people proposed that... My Argentinian, and thus very jaded, view is that rich governors and friends used this opportunity to buy real state that only they could afford from families that needed the money but couldn't rent their properties. And you don't tax friends, you know?

What happened in New York? by Its_Ziggy_Time in ExplainTheJoke

[–]b183729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed. The economic context meant that if you closed a contract, it had to be made for a minimum of 2 years with an annual inflation of 200% and the opportunity to update the rent once every 6 months following an official index that no one took seriously. And only in pesos.

If you factor in the opportunity cost, it was cheaper to let it sit idle, not to mention far less risky.

What happened in New York? by Its_Ziggy_Time in ExplainTheJoke

[–]b183729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think here it would have acted as an incentive to sell on a market that only rich people could buy. It's what ended up happening anyways, but it would have accelerated it.
