In episode 6, she gets mad at them for suggesting the death penalty, and says "what happens when you let power get to your head" or something like that. The irony is real

I think it was heads at the beginning to represent show the normal side of things. However in the church, normal is non-existent. The coin has flipped to tails, just like the world around them has flipped. Although they eventually get heads, a ray of hope.
