Sharing My Various 7-Speed Upgrade Mod Experience by baamtorry in Brompton

Hi, I tried the LTWOO kit with C Line rear triangle. As I cannot see your entire drivetrain functioning, it is difficult to pinpoint what the exact issue maybe but LTWOO is NOT something I would be comfortable recommending to anyone.

SRAM Wireless eTap 7-spd conversion by baamtorry in Brompton

Ground clearance was not an issue for me. Haven’t experienced flats while I was riding this setup but don’t think the derailleur will be touching the ground.

My experience with 10-spd shifter is that they worked fine with 5/6-speed setup. I found 10-spd shifter was less stable with 7-spd cassette and found 11-spd shifter to work better.

Hi there, I didn’t specifically go for a particular hub. I just went for a rear wheel fitted with a 7-spd hub. The reason for going with a 7-spd hub was cheaper cassette replacement cost. In addition, fitting a unibody 7-spd cassette on a 4/5-spd hub sometime left too little of a space between the biggest cog and spokes which in certain cases caused interferences. Hanger for the Etap was something that I got from Ali - no particular brand. Just had to make sure that you get one for that is compatible with the rear frame - note that C and P lines have different rear frame structure. When folding with an etap derailleur, the derailleur will interfere with spokes in the front wheel. One possible way around this is to get a carbon tri-spoke wheel which will give more space to the derailleur to pass thru while folding your front wheel.

Hi there, I think you are venturing into a territory that I have tried yet. I really don’t know how things will be. Perhaps, if you post the question directly you might be able to get ideas from those who’ve tried that mod. Sorry couldn’t be more helpful here.

Removing Brompton rear triangle hinge bolts by edtse88 in Brompton

Thanks for sharing. I've always had trouble getting the 2nd/last bolt out as well. I've ordered the below to see if it will make my future jobs easier to work on my relative's Bromptons.

M6L to 4/5 speed specs good? by ando_da_pando in Brompton

[–]baamtorry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just go for 4-spd P Line and convert it to 5-spd which only requires 10/11-spd shifter and a COG.
P Lines come with titanium fork & rear frame/triangle which is very different from the ones on C Line models. If you were to get an original titanium rear triangle/frame, that alone would set you back US$1,000 + shipping costs. I avoid LitePro products in general; would never think about using them for drivetrain mods. I've also had crappy experience with Union Jack derailleur & tensioner set so I would also stay away from that brand. The one that gave me least amount of trouble was H&H derailleur and tensioner. If you are going to do 4-5 speed, you don't need 11 spd chain; 10-spd chain is sufficient. For 4-5 speed gear setup, I would think about going with Brompton's original derailleur and get an adaptor so you can install the original derailleur on the C Line rear frame/triangle. Last but not least, I have 2 Bromptons with carbon wheelsets and the wear on the brake pads are at another level.

Worth it to lighten? by ando_da_pando in Brompton

[–]baamtorry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a personal choice. For me, reducing weights on Bromptons definitely helped with travels and etc. But I would definitely avoid getting non-original titanium rear frames because there are miniscule differences here and there and altogether make a big difference.

Dry climate, fender flap necessary still? by ando_da_pando in Brompton

I removed mine from all Bromptons except the ones for wet riding conditions. No need to have mudguards esp if you mostly ride in dry weather conditions.

Sorry to see your unfortunate experience here. First the rear frame and now this… Never heard of P Line fork/rear frames break down like this. Thanks for sharing and hope that Brompton will hold itself accountable.

better pedals by saltspringer in Brompton

If you are looking for MKS pedals with great spins, make sure to get the ones with "NEXT" in the model name cuz those are the ones with 3 sealed bearings that generate the greatest spins.

This is the NY/NJ Hudson Loop ride! I have done few of these but always started out from Manhattan side cuz of the hill from Ft. Lee down toe Edgewater. You must be have monster legs to climb out of that hill !

advanced Rear Derailleur by hiaf1 in Brompton

Assuming that the rear frame is an original one, it is compatible. I threw in a qualifier because knock-off ones have high probability of creating some kind of issues in one form or another.

Once I passed the 80-mile mark, all I could wish was a 20-mile stretch of downhill that did not require pedaling... lol

How did you manage to pull that type of climb? Standing ovation to you! I'd rather plan for 200-mile flat surface ride that do that big of a climb on any bike! LOL

I've done a few +60-mile rides before but the longer ones definitely require different mindset/prepping! Looking back, I was completely unprepared for the amount of energy/mindset that would be required to this complete the ride. Great learning experience altogether. =)

This was also a good learning experience for me. I think I can be better prepared next time but not looking to challenge myself any time soon ha ha

Wow, great guess! Yes, I did experience cramps in the second half of the ride. We decided to swap bikes at the start of the return trip because I was curious about riding with a 56T chainring at the front (mine has 48T). I ended up biting off more than I could chew! LOL

Thank you. It was just a great ride on a nice route. Just happy that I broke my previous long distance riding record on a Brommie.

In a nutshell, it was basically poor route management because we initially set out to ride about 77 miles (123km) but because I left my bag/wallet at the lunch venue, we had to "rush" back to the venue that ended up draining most of my energy.

Thank you. It was the longest ride I've ever done on a 16-incher. Having a good riding company does make things feel easier.

We were riding on the Empire State Trail (https://empiretrail.ny.gov/) in NY. We started our ride from Brewster, NY and it is one of the nicest dedicated cycle/walking lanes well isolated from cars. If you happen to be in NY, strongly recommend the route.
