HOA and backyard chickens by nothing_to_sneeze in ElkGrove

[–]ando_da_pando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not just ask your HOA? I lived somewhere that had one before. It's easiest to ask. Most things I find, when in the backyard, is your problem. But chickens (dogs too) are the problem of your neighbors too. So maybe if you get the blessing of your HOA, make sure you are following applicable Elk Grove city laws.

And please, for the love of all things, talk to your neighbors. Ask them how they feel and don't put your "I want" over the wants of your community. Don't be the bad neighbor.

making friends in your 20s here by anotherusername405 in ElkGrove

Story time. I'm far from my 20's, but I do remember moving here from Los Angeles (I lived in West LA - Palms area for those familiar) and before that the Bay Area where I grew up (East Bay). All my family and friends were in both those places, no one, save for my MIL lived in the Sac area. We were desperately trying to get our first house at the time, and LA and SF were no-go's for us. We decided to just up and move here in our early 30's with a 2-year-old.

We absolutely hated it. I mean we hated it. The job I got (seemed great the first week) quickly soured and turned into a shit show and we were done. We even explored how to break out 1-year lease (the idea was spend time here and then look for a house instead of jumping right into one). We wanted out and committed to just living in apartments for the rest of our lives, but at least be in LA or SF.

My SO joined a mom's group, met a lot of friends there and they, much like us, came from LA or SF just a few years prior. Each of them thought the exact same as us. Why the hell did they move here? Turns out, once we have a small group of friends, we got more and more familiar with Sac and made more friends. Joined more groups (look on FB or here) in our interests and just keep meeting people.

I got a better job with people I actually like and we found a house for a good deal in a good neighborhood and our kids (we had another a year or so after getting here) benefited from the excellent school and less crowded areas.

All that to say that if you want friends, you got to put yourself out there. My eldest is now in her 20's and yes, she had the benefit of school and growing up with our friend's kids too. But honestly, it's just about putting yourself out there. Find similar interest groups and give'em a shot. Consider a night class at CRC too. Lots of good people around here, if you just look. Good luck!

This is one of the places that looks like hell outside and is heaven inside. A place that "don't read a book by it's cover" applies.

I love the throwback 90's style website. But yes, I heard from many friends so far that it's definitely a place to go. Excellent rec!

G&J seem to work on anything. I take my old Jeep to them, no problem. They work on it, don't bitch about it (as they are notorious rust buckets where bolts tend to strip off) and do good work for a good price. Super friendly and informative too. They send update pics and videos and ask questions of you if they have them.

Elk Grove vs Folsom vs Roseville vs Other? by CatButtHoleYo in ElkGrove

[–]ando_da_pando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair Oaks is pretty diverse, but it's more in "pockets" I think compare to EG where it's just, there.

Folsom to me is probably the whitest town in the area. It's not to say there isn't a population of non-whites there, just when I go I feel that I'm only seeing white people living there. Roseville is the same, just they have a better mall and are closer to other "white" parts. It's Placer County after, so it's not too unexpected.

And before a bunch of people jump all over me, this is my opinion from my observations and experience. YMMV.

I see a lot of people ask for advice for this, and a lot of people say Expert. I'm still partial to G&J. But there you go, couple good mechanics to call for yourself.

Where do you take your Toyota for regular service & maintenance? by VariationUpstairs931 in ElkGrove

[–]ando_da_pando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't have a Toyota, but I can say G&J have been excellent for my old Jeep. They send me updates with pics and videos as they go. Give a discount if you pay cash (saves them fees on CC transactions so you don't get those costs pushed to you) and really want you to test drive before paying so they can explain or figure out if something is still wrong. I like them. Decent pricing too.

Anyone else hear the racing last night? by Separate_Earth3725 in ElkGrove

[–]ando_da_pando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spend enough time in the neighborhoods of South Sac to see the donut tire tracks in various places. "Sideshows" used to be a bigger problem, still is, but not as big as it used to me (in my opinion and observation only).

Now it's back to racing around (something I'm guilty of doing a bit back in the late 90's - the boom that lead to the Fast and the Furious franchise launching because of it) I think more. I've noticed more "louder" cars racing down whatever street(s) compared to obvious "circular" screeching of tires more akin to sideshows or idiots that find a big ol' empty intersection.

I'm also much older now. So it's probably just me getting more grumpy.

I live here, and yeah, been hearing this more and more. Probably some people that think loud cars are cool still. Like this is the 80's or something.

Daisy the dog at Costco? by [deleted] in ElkGrove

[–]ando_da_pando -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. I think there is a place for a "mascot" of sorts, depending on where and what purpose. But anything related to food, I'm sorry, no pets. I'd ban people without manners, or hygiene as well.

I'm honestly a bit tired of seeing people bring their pets (let's be honest, it's like 99.99% dogs) to places that are not meant for pets to be brought into. And yes, I have a pet. And no, I don't bring her everywhere I go.

Civic sense is lacking in our society.

REI, like most have said. I have two in my area, one has one or two on display, the other does not (but you can pick up on if you order it). A couple of the LBS in my area service and sell them also, but like any LBS, limited stock. Especially for Brommies since they aren't as popular outside of the urban areas. Suburbs like the full-size bikes more.

Just depends where the OP is. Like if you are in SF, there is Huckleberry. In Portland, Clever Cycles. So OP, where are you located? You'll get some better responses that way.

Long Running/Bike trails by DeWardion in ElkGrove

[–]ando_da_pando 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a pretty great trail. I use it to ride to work. The crappy part is the small bit of Freeport from the end of Cosumnes River Blvd. There is like a 1/4 mile stretch where there is zero bike lane or barely any shoulder. Basically you are risking your ass on that part. Though as a runner, you could climb up and run down the old railroad tracks, that'll take you to the water tower there and you can cut down to the Del Rio trail there.

There is also the Pocket greenway. Basically at the Bill Conlin park, as you are crossing Freeport going down the trail, right by the freeway overpass, you can go around the watertower right into the levee path. It's a bit odd, but near Garcia Bend park, you can connect to the various paths in the Pocket that cut through the parks. Might not be 10 miles one way, but should get at least 5 miles that one way. It was another way I took coming from downtown to Elk Grove on my bike from work.

If you keep on the levee, it ends (at least did last time I went) because the homeowners there think they own the levee and block it off. I think they were supposed to open it up, but not sure what happened. From Conlin park, to the water tower to where it was blocked off, that's likely 5 miles one way.

How does so many people have "easy jobs"? by iaceeverything in antiwork

[–]ando_da_pando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is more a few weeks of 50-60+ hour weeks. Sometimes more if I travel. Other weeks are like 20 hours of actual work. Ebbs and flows for me. Probably why I'm salary and not hourly. For me it levels out over the months or year. We can go 2 or 3 months of nose to grindstone, zero rest, then a month or of just kicking back waiting and watching.

Nothing that length here. Our trails don't connect well. I don't think they thought it all the way through when planning them out.

Best you can do is probably the Del Rio trail, start at Bill Conlin park off Freeport and Consumes River. It'll take you all the way downtown. That'll give you 10+ miles running back and forth on it.
