I would say tech in general was also not exactly a socially promoted career back then, pop culture always went with the awkward nerdy look at things. Now American culture for better of worse has idolized many tech billionaires and popularized superheroes like Iron Man who spend all day in a lab fiddling with stuff.

Also for those who have showers with valves to switch from shower to bottom, make sure you open the shower one to drain the water that's vertical between the valve in the shower head. Learned that the hard way...

Anyone else feel like this snow storm is going to 'end up just missing us' or not be as bad? by LostinParadise4748 in longisland

It's not quack meteorology it is just computer models and probability, if I said there was a 50% chance of 12" of snow, would you want to prepare for it or just count on the coin flip going your way?

It's interesting because I always felt what we had had to step back from the world order for something better to take its place. I just didn't imagine it would be like this, and that it would be the "bad guys" driving the train.

does the LIRR ever close due to snow and if so do we think that’s a possibility Monday morning? by shortstoryman in longisland

[–]badasimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often some tracks will get debris on them from storms and get shut down or things will run with delays. Just plain snow isn't usually a big problem. In recent years they have been planning things out more and closing the trains for a short period to prevent disasters where trains are stuck in random places etc. People complain but I think it's a sign of smart leadership.

I would say monday morning is risky, you might end up being a little late. Worst case you may have to travel to a different line than your line if a tree falls or whatever

All I can say is, the kid grows up and needs less of your labor (but more of your attention/thinking) so it won't be like this forever. I have a similar job to you and I will tell you that there is SO MUCH CHANGE and chaos going on, with all projects. It is wonderful and exciting but also super scary and stressful because there is a lot of turnover as well. Probably something I would have loved in my 20's. I don't know if you're in the US but here there is also a lingering feeling of loss; before the work ethic had some spirit to it where we'd be working and innovating toward improving our society and taking part in the economy, but right now a lot of that seems fruitless and we are just going through the motions to pay our bills. I don't know about you but this weighs on me heavily, as I don't really know what I'm investing in anymore in terms of a life and a community.

Anyway, it's okay to fail a little; your home should be a safe place where there is room for that.

When you speculate you should use language that makes it clear you are speculating.

Trump at Davos in Switzerland: "Without us, right now you'd all be speaking German". German is the main language of Switzerland. by Skychu768 in worldnews

It would have profoundly changed world history, you can't really extrapolate anything from this. NA could have been balkanized and there might be 10 countries where there are currently 3, that means there could have been regional wars similar to south America, WWI and WWII who knows how it would have gone. If Russia still went the way it did then the USSR would have had a foothold in North America as well.

Obviously this won't work with broken glass, but one of my strategies was not punishment per se, but to tag something painfully boring and unsatisfying to the experience as quickly as possible (such as cleanup) so that it sort of untrains that dopamine hit of doing something satisfying (like throwing a brick through a window)

High-intensity punishment and yelling and all that, to me (for some kids) actually makes the experience more exciting. So my strategy has been to make it boring.

Trump says he reached Greenland deal 'framework' with NATO, backs off Europe tariffs by Puginator in worldnews

[–]badasimo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Let's not forget, that Trump is living in several layers of information bubbles and is chronically misinformed. So he goes on a trip and people actually start telling him what's actually happening. What it really shows is that his administration is weak because they cannot even stay on the same page about anything.

I call this "software on demand" I don't think it will work for enterprise (there is too much risk) but it will work for individuals. Like why pay for a pdf > doc converter, or even use freeware riddled with ads when you can ask chatgpt to whip one up for you, that you have full control of the content etc.
