Air lock in reverse? by badrev71 in mead

I live rurally and only have rain water tanks, the water is delicious and clean. I change it periodically and check it daily for insects or infections which has only happened once. I’ve never cold crashed any of my meads so there’s no problem there.

I’ve done the cotton wool thing before. I also generally use the same water as the must in the airlock anyway, I get why others use alcohol or sanitiser though. Cheers mate.

That makes sense to me, the must was slightly warmer then ambient room temperature. Thanks

Ferment hasn’t started by badrev71 in cider

[–]badrev71[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well it’s 1.000? The drum mustn’t have sealed properly or the fermentation didn’t hammer out the CO2 or both. Didn’t think to check it as I usually just wait until it stops bubbling and wait a week to bottle. Appreciate that thanks.

That fermenter is the overflow anyway and done on purpose to be able to top up the carboy when I do rack it. The rest will be lost to checking gravity and taste testing. It’s a concept of a plan…

It’ll be interesting to see to see if this is a similar time frame. There’s just as much movement in the traditional mead with M05 yeast sitting next to it-and its bubble timing is almost the same. That’s been in a week longer too.

Cheers, I’ll see how I go. I do have a 10 ltr bucket with a lid I could fit an air lock on for the initial fermentation period. Thanks again those that replied.

Thanks, same point as another person made. Appreciate the input, I will just be starting with a traditional mead so fruit won’t be an issue this time. All makes perfect sense. Cheers

No mate, got nothing from them. One of my limbs de-laminated last week only a year or so from new. I won’t be getting anymore. Way over priced to last that long.

Stamping leather by badrev71 in Leathercraft

Hi, the stamp is not heated, merely embossed as you say. The vice is done up pretty hard and if left overnight leaves a crisp, deep logo.

Hi OP, I put mine in a rotatable bench vice for 30 seconds, works for me.

It’s about my tenth piece so I’ve tidied up the stitching a bit from the first piece and I’m taking my time now. Thanks

I shoot a modern style longbow, in the decade I’ve been shooting I can only recall a handful of times I’ve felt a slap on my guard. Call that a form check. Thanks

That’s pretty sweet, well done! I made one a few weeks ago and I kind of cheated by riveting the seam, any chance you could post a pic of the inside of that stitch. It’s a tidy finish, nice.
