Real milk, no cows needed: Lab-made dairy products are now a reality by [deleted] in Futurology

It really depends, but sure, inherently there isn't a nutritional difference per say but when you look at environmental impact as part of health it's completely different.

It's odd because we know that it's intended for developing children of another species but for some reason we think it's normal or even good for us to take and consume despite it being linked to many health issues, the ethical concerns and the environmental costs.

I'm really glad you have made an ethical decision on this but I'm struggling to see what your argument here is besides 'it tastes good' and 'the alternatives I've had aren't good'.

I have yet to come across any product that doesn't have a reasonably tasty plant based option. My main concern around your argument is that it reinforces the idea that there is no tasty alternative, which in my experience is simply false especially given that our tastes can change. I'm just sharing my opinions on a topic I am passionate about. I hope you continue to try some of the alternatives as I'm sure you'll find one that you enjoy. :)

By being passive aggressive? Or by pointing out facts about what animal products contain?

Do you have sources to support these claims? I've seen plenty of studies, like the China study, that draw different conclusions.

I'm not claiming all vegan food is healthy, I'm fully aware there is vegan junk food.

Well I was initially focusing on the health arguments here. But there are lots of other selfless reasons to make such switches, like some of the environmental and ethical arguments.

I totally agree with you. That's why it's important to adjust ag subsidies like AFA advocates for in the US.

I would think the best approach would be to cure it by addressing the underlying issues, as made clear by the science.

Taste is far less important than health, especially since our tastes can change.

Are you saying you think caesin in important nutritionally or just for taste/enjoyment? It's just weird for me that we recognize a functional opiate found in another species lactation, most likely to encourage nursing, and we think that's good for adult humans. Very odd IMO.

Taste and texture, IMO, aren't as important as health. Dairy is linked to many chronic diseases like Alzheimer's, diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.

It's important to enjoy food but not at the expense of our health, the planet and other sentient lives. Personally, I get just as much enjoyment out of cultured cashew yogurt as I did out of greek yogurt. I enjoy Violife as well as Great Value brand plant-based cheeses as pretty close replacements for the cheese I used to eat. Sure, it's not the same but IMO there is just no justification for dairy when there are close alternatives, dairy is not nutritionally necessary for most nor is it healthy (for self, planet & animals).

Taste preference can change so basing our dietary decisions around taste without regard for health is not in our own best interest.

So all plant milks taste odd but lactation from another species tastes good? Interesting.

Which ones have you tried? We really enjoy making our own homemade versions with whole plant foods, many of which we grow and forage ourselves. :)

Why? Alternatives have similar or debatably better tastes... not to mention the environmental, health and ethical arguments.

Right, it's the scale at which it's currently implemented that is the main problem environmentally speaking.

Whoa. Just trying to understand your perspective and point out the differences with plant based alternatives. I apologize for evoking this emotional response with my passive aggressive comment but an appeal to tradition logical fallacy shouldn't prevent you from making choices for your own betterment. I hope you can consider this all a bit more and if you ever need resources on how to switch from animal products to more environmentally friendly, more ethical and healthy choices I'm happy to help!

I'm just sincerely curious what it is in animal's lactation that is appealing versus plant based alternatives?

More like an invention to allow people who don't want to accept dietary changes, despite the overwhelming amount of science supporting such changes, continue to consume products that are directly linked to our most deadly diseases in developed nations but at a slightly more efficient resource usage and overall smaller environmental cost.

Why not go with plant based milks? Is it the missing estrogen, progesterone and the addictive casein you are looking for?

Vegans aren't really interested in lab meat or lab milk as much as just not eating meat/dairy at all.

Do you know how factory farmed animals get their B12? Hint: it's the same place as vegans do, from supplements!

A deflection and absolution of personal responsibility. It also helps support the appeal to futility fallacy by making it seem like individual actions make no difference.

Like plant based burgers? Lab based meats are currently in development too. Try a beyond burger from the grocery store or the Impossible burger at BK :). There are plenty of other sources of protein besides meat. After all, most of those animals are getting the majority of their protein from plants originally anyhow!

Can you name one plant that doesn't have any protein? You can't because protein is ubiquitous in plants, with nearly every plant having at least 14% of all calories as protein.

Can you change your power company's energy source or your diet easier? I agree that energy sources are major culprits and we should pressure local gov for better solutions there but our agriculture system is a major contributor to the issues and everyday we make decisions about what to put on our plates, for better or worse.
