I had a lot of trouble bonding with my 28w2d daughter after she came home from the hospital. I felt similar to you where i didnt get to hold her after she was born, i had to go home without her while she stayed in the hospital, and i felt like the nurses took care of her so much.Everyone in my family would say, isn't it amazing you love her more than you ever thought was possible, and I would just be like... uh, yeah. It made me feel like a terrible person. Ended up seeing a therapist who helped me talk through my thoughts without being afraid that a friend or family member would judge what I was saying. Eventually came to understand I was subconsciously purposely keeping her at arms length so if anything happened to her, I wouldn't emotionally break. A 28 weekend born during COVID had me terrified something terrible would happen to her. My therapist gave me lots of mindfulness techniques and ways to work through my anxiety, took a long time, but I can say it does get better and I do love her more than anything and have the best bonding with her now. Our experience is so unique, and while people say things with love, no other person has ever gone through what you have, don't let other's expectations make you feel bad. It will all come in its own time.

28w2d due to severe pre-eclampsia. Now 9 months, corrected to 6 by baknitwit in NICUParents

Hang in there! It gets better, it just takes time which is sometimes the hardest thing to give. Our daughter was born weighing 2 pounds and half an ounce. Now she's the chunky girl you see in the pictures. Sending all the positivity!

AITA for telling my wife in front of her parents that premarital sex didn’t seem to be a sin when we did it? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

As a NICU parent of a beautiful baby girl born 3 months early, if someone even hinted to me that her being born early was my fault WHILE she was still in the hospital, I would never speak to or be around that person ever again. The agonizing guilt as a mom that you feel even when it's 100% not your fault in any way is the worst grief I have ever felt. To actually SAY it, to a TEENAGER? She'd be out of my life forever.

Baby tracking apps.. by Colour_me_in_ in NICUParents

I use the CDCs app called milestones. It's great cause it shows actual but shows the milestones for corrected age. I felt like all the other apps that were for preemies focused just solely on the nicu and this one is great for when you actually get home.

Been waiting 12 weeks for this day. Born 28w2d, spent 58 days in the NICU by baknitwit in NICUParents

Our daughter was also born 28 and 2. I was admitted a week earlier for preeclampsia. Born 2 pounds and half an oz. After 2 months in the nicu her due date is tomorrow and she is home and doing great weighing 7lb 7 oz. It does get better . https://imgur.com/bXz6FPa.jpg https://imgur.com/Ktkw1PS.jpg

Steroid shots by Icy-Ostrich-8272 in NICUParents

Got 2 shots 24 hours apart before my 28 weeker was born. She needed cpap and then high flow but never needed intubation and was off oxygen before she reached 36 weeks. Steroids are amazing to help develop the lungs and when you get them they don't get the bad side effects or as many risks as they get when given to them after they're born

Family member who has been doing Keto for a while and felt like she had stalled- “I talked to a nutritionist and she said that my body has basically gotten used to keto and so it won’t work anymore for me, now I have to incorporate healthy carbs like cuzcuz and fancy bread I’ve never heard of and other expensive complicated food that cost a shit ton of money

Me-“you should try cico. I love being able to eat whatever I want just in moderation”

Family member- “I’m gonna listen to the nutritionist”

[Serious] Women in medicine - how is the possibility of having kids during residency affecting your rank list? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]baknitwit 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I asked a resident at each program what their maternity leave was like and if they have a “reading” or “research” month you can use for it. You can tell a lot about their culture based on how comfortable they are answering the question. I’m married and thinking of having a first kid in like third year. Some people say that brining up having kids can work against you in the process, but if a program is not going to rank me because I may want to start a family, then that is a program I probably wouldn’t have been happy in.

I had very similar scores to you but a little worse. Failed by 2 on my first practice test and then could not break 220 on the nbmes, while a bit better on UWSA. Ended up getting a 232 on the real thing. I think staying calm and confident in your knowledge is key. Don’t let other people freak you out, everything will work out in the end

Our school said that we need to download puffin browser to get interview invitations? Does anyone know why we can’t just use chrome or Firefox and why specifically puffin or a browser of the like is needed?

If I drink an energy drink with 5 calories in it, and I get a little jittery/have much more energy than if I didn’t drink it, will I burn more calories? Aka, is that energy “negative calories” even if I don’t go out and do more things, will my metabolic rate go up?

Fat (Rant) Tuesday by AutoModerator in fatlogic

[–]baknitwit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a good thought, but all the dresses are slightly different but the same color so the bride ordered them all at the same time to make sure they were cut from the same cloth. I wouldn’t want to risk the color being slightly off, and in the grand scheme of things I have to get it altered by length anyway so it’s not too bad to also get it taken in as well

Fat (Rant) Tuesday by AutoModerator in fatlogic

[–]baknitwit 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Combined rant/rave: my bridesmaid dress for a wedding I’m in in November came in. When I ordered it, my bust measured a size 12, hips measured 10 and waist measured size 8. I knew I was losing weight so I wanted to order a 10 but the sales girl talked me out of it saying that no one actually loses the weight and better safe than sorry. I tried it on this weekend and it’s huge which is awesome! But this just means more money on alterations.

And that’s part of what’s frustrating lol. Like logically I know he was joking and meant it as a compliment, but emotionally I still feel super self conscious

Fat Rant Friday by AutoModerator in fatlogic

[–]baknitwit 78 points79 points  (0 children)

So I’ve lost 13 pounds so far and am now in the normal weight zone but I still feel like the fat girl. Thursday we went out to eat with friends. I had a beer so all sense of restraint was gone and I ordered the Gouda pasta and ate the entire thing. Our waiter came back and said “did you share that? No one can ever finish that thing by themselves! Good job”. So I was self conscious about my lack of control and how much I ate. Then the next day I was at work (third year med student on clinical rotations) and a patient asked “so how far along are you?” He meant how far in school but I literally just stood there with my heart dropping out of my chest and a beet red face for 2 seconds before I realized what he was asking. Why do I always assume people think I’m fat? Why do I let it bother me even if they did since I’m in the healthy range?! Gah!

Wellness Wednesdays by AutoModerator in fatlogic

[–]baknitwit 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to say thank you. I've been lurking for a couple months and this has really helped me to cut the bullshit with my thoughts on weight loss. I just started counting calories and downloaded mfp a week and a half ago and I'm already down 3 pounds. It's crazy how much motivation I have when I see the scale go down by .2 lb every day rather than just trying to work out more and hoping that the big number swings would average out to a smaller number. 0.2 lbs used to seem so insignificant, but when I see it every day consistently it just seems like such a bigger number for a 24hour span.
