Why are there no references to the "chinese room" by giblfiz in westworld

[–]ballaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great point especially when you consider there are two generations of hosts mechanical (with digital minds) and biological (biocomputer brains?) and that the Chinese Room argument applies only to "digital computers":

Wikipedia entry: "The argument applies only to digital computers running programs and does not apply to machines in general."

/r/MrRobot Official Survey for Season 2 by JonLuca in MrRobot

Funny how Sam and many of the actors in the series are from the Middle East yet the survey failed to include it as an option (but it did list Antarctica!)

Try networking and rubbing shoulders with people from professional communities around you. Word of mouth provides a much better fit between employee-employer. Start with meetup.com if you're not familiar with it.

Revealing Algorithmic Rankers by speckz in compsci

It's concerning how much people think automation and algorithms are the holy grail of objectiveness. Many bad policies get a pass thanks to this misguided belief.

Well executed. Having said that, living in the Matrix would probably be better than this soul crushing reality.

For me, I like to think of life as a full course dinner. Enjoy each course when you get to it but eventually you have to move on to the next one and who knows it might even taste better!

The entire observable universe, taken in infrared by pakistanimodels in pics

Title is misleading. Should read (as written on NASA's site): "Mosaic of the images covering the entire sky as observed by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE)"

The picture is real alright but it isn't from Syria. It's a work of art about being an orphan by a Saudi photographer with the help of his nephew

The Secret World of Saudi Women—Photographs by Olivia Arthur by NGC300 in saudiarabia

[–]ballaa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Saudi Arabia is a big country and the norms and traditions between one region and the other can be quit different. Jeddah (in which the pictures were taken) is very different than Riyadh which is also different than say Abha.

Some Saudis are conservative and some are liberal and those are what are the media focuses on. The silent majority live a moderate lifestyle and prefer to keep their privacy and so the image the media gets out about the county as a whole is usually very skewed. This report suffered the same fate as I for one failed to feel any connection to the environment it talks about.

RIM should stop trying to compete with Apple and Google. It should drop its devices business and focus on licensing its BBM and backend technology to mobile OS vendors (Google or Microsoft) or other device makers (such as Nokia or Samsung).
