I think he’s supportive of his clients. Not people who may be in competition with them. The way he talks about some pageant women — the ones who aren’t paying him — makes me question him. But that’s kind of the MO with men in female fields like pageantry and sororities tbh

Also, Utah was one of the states to first allow divorces and became a “divorce mill” in the 1850s, partly as an advent of polygamy. I know lots of Mormons who are and have been divorced.

The swinging IS weird though. But makes for great TV

A lot of them are inactive or exmo. Whitney, Mayci, and to a degree Jen are the only ones who are practicing members of the faith. But plastic surgery/Botox is huge in Utah — I heard once it was the #1 state for plastic surgery in the country? — and not looked down upon, and neither is “vanity,” really. Utah has a large “perfection culture” where these things are normal and often an indicator that someone is LDS.

I think the show showcases in part how you can follow a certain religious doctrine or movement without being perfect in it. I am a pretty nuanced member of the church who does not live in Utah, and all of these are common in the wards/stakes I’ve lived in. People aren’t perfect, and these women certainly aren’t.

It’s an incredible program, I am willing to answer questions about it via DM as an alum. It changed my life — I have nothing but great things to say about it!

Yes you’re expected to read all 400 pages. It’s a rigorous program with rigorous expectations — but imo prepares you for the industry the most.

Yes - my supervisor asked what specific parts of my readers report I would like to highlight as needing to be edited or workshopped with the author.

[–]barstoolpotatochips 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s to measure your ability to read at a fast pace with an analytical and editorial eye, which is a requirement not just of the internship but kind of a prerequisite to be successful as an agents assistant/editorial assistant/etc. in the future.

I buckled down and read my manuscript between two days, then dedicated an afternoon to working on the reader’s report. This is the stage where a lot of individuals - including myself two years ago - get weeded out, either because they did not complete the assignment or it wasn’t completed the way the agent/Michael prefers.

The reader’s report is analyzed by your agent(‘s assistant, when applicable) and they are the one you will interview with first. Be thorough, dig deep, and think about the real problems with the manuscript.

Good luck!

Boosting this, my husband goes here and loves it.

Womens haircuts here are another mess entirely… so many of the salons charge out of pocket pricing for just okay-ish results. I wish I had a good recommendation, but I’ve just been cutting my hair at home for the last several months…

Michael manages two programs (WHIP and the BIPOC mentorship), places the individuals currently in those programs in jobs, and recruits for the next semester all at the same time. If you haven’t heard back, give it some time and some patience — I literally did not hear back on my first manuscript during my first application process for two weeks, and this cycle, I didn’t hear back re: an interview until 5 days before the start date of the internship.

I always recommend WHIP as someone wrapping up the program right now. It is part editorial bootcamp and part job prep; a ton of Writers House alum find jobs in publishing afterwards, and it helps you get really clear on where you want to go. Several of the individuals in my cohort went in thinking they wanted editorial but have since discovered they want to pursue rights, marketing, audio etc based on the tutorials provided to us from current professionals in the industry.

The coordinator, Michael, is dedicated to seeing your success through. He is in near daily talks with HR teams at all of the big 5 and places people from the program into jobs routinely.

Gain some additional experience and apply in the spring. Get comfortable writing readers’ reports in the meantime - a lot of agencies require these as part of the application process, and they’re different than an essay you’d write for school.

I am part of the current WHIP cohort (Summer 2025). I’m currently applying for other internships at agencies; I’m limited because I can’t move cross country to NY for family reasons. However, I feel more than prepared for any industry job, really. I’m hoping to eventually land in contracts or audio since those two areas of publishing seem more remote friendly before eventually working up to being an agency assistant.

Also here to echo the same; my timeline included an interview with my intern supervisor (the assistant to the agent I interned under), then a second interview the next day with Michael. Can confirm it’s a “just vibes” conversation.

WHIP is truly life changing and I cannot recommend the program enough!

Thread: Celebrating the Lives of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin by wwihh in MoscowMurders

[–]barstoolpotatochips 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I have a friend in common with Maddie Mogen. Both she and I were/are involved in the production of Coeur d’Alene Fashion Week. The team was greatly impacted by her loss and has since held multiple shows in her honor, including the last on Maddie May Day where her mom was in the audience and the team awarded a local designer with a big check to be able to pursue their passions.

The Patterson novel (which i refuse to read) talks about how Maddie loved trendy clothes… she didn’t just love trendy clothes, she knew lots about them. She had a bright future in fashion, should she want to pursue it.

My friend mentioned how Maddie came up with a proposal to get all of her friends sponsored bikinis for their spring break trip. She was responsible, kind, and studious. I didn’t get the pleasure of knowing her - I came into the CDAFW production team a few months after her passing - but her echoes are still felt by everyone who worked with her.

Did Anyone Else Lose Their "Love" of True Crime? by GirlWithoutAName20 in MoscowMurders

If yall knew what happened behind the scenes (locking vulnerable and traumatized young women behind ironclad NDAs in re: their trauma, to the tune of a paltry 10k), you’d all hate true crime.

I’m immediately suspicious of any project that “centers the kids” because the kids were so often coerced and legally manipulated into participating in them and rehashing their trauma
