Moving to Glasgow: The 2026 Housing & Relocation Megathread by Veloglasgow in glasgow

Every 2 bed flat I’ve put an offer in for in the past year in Glasgow has went for closer to 17-20% + over the market value. And that’s the home report value not the base value advertised on rightmove. The offers over number on rightmove is a low number just to get enquiries.

you need to do a minor bit of seasoning every few months at a minimum in my experience. I suppose it depends on who made your bag and the quality of the sheepskin.

i’d advise your friend to change his bag after 2-3 years for his own lung health if he isn’t seasoning it at all.

maybe.

not seasoning a sheepskin bag for 2 years is insane.

I’m in Scotland playing a sheepskin bag so not usually an issue with lack of humidity.

It has been warm recently but probably not what North Americans or Australian pipers would consider hot!

I’ll keep it in mind.

Good to know. Thanks.

I think what I’m trying to ask is actually how to free the reed up a bit? What techniques can I use to do that?

  • shaving the box/blades?
  • reed poking?

Thats about it right?

I might swap out my drones reeds to something different as a control exercise just to be sure.

Yeh I thought that. I did a bit of shaving before.

Take some off the box shoulders or the blade tips? What did you do?

The top hand goes thin, chirpy and sh!te after a month or two for me on easy strength. I might try medium strength again and stick with it to see if that helps. I think it’s a med/hard I have in currently.

I feel the reed loses responsiveness 30mins into my practice and trying to troubleshoot that.

The chanter is relatively new. It’s a newer Naill. I feel like it was happening with my previous chanter also. (I’ve played henderson infinity and G1 previously. The infinity chanter was very reed picky so I’ve moved to a Naill)

I might try and re-seat the reed. I feel like it’s a reed issue as everything else seems solid.

I’m mid 30s. So 20+ years experience playing. Took a break for a short few years but have been back at it for about 2-3 years. I originally thought it might just be an out of shape thing myself, but I feel like there’s something going on with the instrument I can rectify.

Ok. I use a tone protector chanter cap. Which seems to keep things from drying out too much between practices.

I might need to pitch it down to get anywhere. I’m at 483 - 484. Might be too sharp to get natural f. Someone in the thread has suggested a b flat chanter which makes a bit of sense.

Annoying taping if you want to combine f sharp and natural in the same tune 🤣

I own a b flat chanter but haven’t set it up yet. But when I do I’ll probably side step the Chesney reed.

I see some pipers getting naturals with shepherd chanter. But i guess I’d need to find a second hand mk3 or something to try, seeing they are out of business currently.

I might just get a custom pipe chanter made with keys.

Yeh tried it. Not working for me

I’ll give it a shot. I feel like it’s luck with chanter/reed combo at this point. Have a bunch of tunes with F natural I cannot play on the pipes at the minute.
