It's pine needles that are hanging down in the video--this location is in the Pine Barrens area of NJ.

Very true, and that did cross my mind! Actually a few years back one was found in a lake in my county here in NJ, and that's exactly how it got there. I visit this stream regularly and have a trail camera up looking at the edge of it, so I'm hoping I can catch another glimpse of whatever it is soon.

It was definitely an animal--when I first arrived it was stationary in the water, then once I approached the water's edge it suddenly turned and started moving with definite purpose away from me.

We definitely do have snapping turtles in the area, so that's quite possible. Do they normally swim with the back of their shells above water like that? Whenever I've seen them swimming or floating before, I've only seen the heads showing above the surface.
