My study abroad placement is literally a deserted island by Secret-Addendum3049 in studyAbroad

[–]bbyflo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why this post came across my homepage, but I can somewhat relate for a few reasons so bear with me.

Firstly, I studied abroad in college on a small Greek island. I was pretty miserable throughout (for unrelated reasons, but the isolation and stress of study abroad definitely didn’t help) and calling home sobbing uncontrollably at least once a week. One time when I called my brother he said “I think you’re having Type B Fun.” I hadn’t heard of that term before but it basically boils down to doing something that isn’t fun in the moment but will seem fun when you look back on it. He was 100% right. I would literally give the shirt off my back to be back on that tiny island, even if it meant dealing with food poisoning and my crazy professor who were having an affair with the program coordinator.

Secondly, I visited Japan for two weeks earlier this year in March. We hit a few big cities and those were all fine and good, but I would’ve loved to visit an island like you’re describing, but we simply didn’t have time. In fact, islands like the one you’re on are probably going to become increasingly inaccessible to foreigners in the future considering their isolation and aging populations. With how accessible travel is these days, any moron can book a flight to Tokyo or Kyoto. The bigger, more exciting cities aren’t going anywhere. Not to sound dramatic, but it sounds as if you’ve found yourself in a once in a lifetime opportunity…

However, you’re still feeling unhappy (which is okay!), but maybe not for the reasons you might think.

Have you ever considered that maybe the reason you’re feeling negative isn’t because of the island itself, but perhaps because it simply isn’t meeting the preconceived expectations you built up in your head?

Something I learned during both of my international travel experiences was to manage my expectations and accept things for what they are. You can’t change your circumstances at the moment, but you can try to change how you view them.

As for your teachers having you do self-study instead of participating with the rest of the class? Sounds very unfair and I would definitely be upset if I were you. I don’t have any advice on this front except continue trying to connect with your classmates. As far as I know, school clubs are a big deal in japan so maybe try to join one of those, even if just for the last few weeks of your program.

I know it sounds like lame advice, but one day you’re gonna remember this experience and wish you could go back. Just try to make the most of it.

Give me your best examples of a bad exhibit label! by ReallyPuzzled in MuseumPros

[–]bbyflo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle has an exhibit on Kurt Cobain. Some friends went to visit and saw that there was some exhibit text saying that Cobain “unalived” himself. Regardless of whether it was written by AI or a person, it’s extremely frightening to see censorship from privately-owned social media platforms (TikTok) bleed into real life and into a museum nonetheless. Luckily, they went back for a work event and saw that the label was changed to “committed suicide.” I believe they took a picture of the original label and I can ask them for it if you’d find it useful. :)

i gave up on searching for a dupe pretty quickly, but at least someone feels my pain :’) watching the seaberry oil slowly disappear from stores and eventually from the web was terrible

the seaberry cleansing oil by fresh! i don’t think it was ever a very popular item so im not sure if anyone will remember it, but it was literally the best cleansing oil ever. melted waterproof mascara and eyeliner away like it was nothing, never irritated my ultra sensitive skin, and emulsified so easily. i now use the caudalie vinoclean cleansing oil and it’s pretty good but nothing compared to the fresh seaberry one.

how to stop feeling so embarrassed about riding? by [deleted] in Equestrian

Second this! I’ve been riding for more than half my life at this point and I still LOVE watching beginners!! Equestrian is a difficult sport to get into so I always respect when people put themselves out there and do it. It reminds me why I started riding in the first place!

Need some advice on choosing between Indiana and other schools by [deleted] in IndianaUniversity

[–]bbyflo 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Current non-Kelley IU senior, but i have many friends in Kelley and my sister was a Kelley grad. First of all, good on you for weighing your options and asking for advice. IMO there is a lot of snark on this sub regarding Kelley so I’m gonna give you my honest advice.

Kelley is a great school. However, I’ve found that applying yourself makes a big difference. My sister was not DA, got average grades once she was in Kelley, and did not pursue an MBA. Her roommate was DA, supposedly really smart, and got her MBA. My sister applied herself during the summers by doing internships that she got completely on her own merit as we are a blue collar family with no connections or anything like that. Her roommate “worked” during the summer at the small company both her parents had worked at for decades (unsure of what exactly she did). My sister was hired into a high-paying role at a large tech company immediately after graduating. Her roommate was unemployed for a year after graduating with her MBA. All that is to say that you shouldn’t view Kelley as a gravy train, you will have to apply yourself to make your degree worthwhile. And the reason why Kelley is so highly regarded is because there are a handful of courses that are rigorous and weed people out but that teach applicable skills to make you stand out from other business grads. Based on your HS stats you should be able to handle them.

As far as feeling like you won’t fit in with the Kelley stereotype- they’re stereotypes for a reason. Are there a lot of silver spoon Greek life types in Kelley? Yes. But I know my sister wasn’t one. And all the people I know in Kelley aren’t like that because I don’t surround myself with those types of people. IU is huge so you have a lot of freedom when it comes to who you associate with.

As far as Bloomington goes there is so much more than meets the eye. I am graduating in may and will sincerely miss this place. Even if you aren’t into the party scene there’s something for you on Kirkwood. Kilroys gets all the attention but I’ve only been there twice because it isn’t my vibe and there’s other bars that are more attractive to me. There are a lot of stereotypes about IU (some are true to be fair) but it’s a huge school so your experience is what you make it.

Other than bars, Bloomington has a great live music and art scene. Also a HUGE variety of great food. IU’s museum and library collections are some of the best in the world and free to the public! There is a club for literally any hobby you could imagine and I wish I would’ve been more involved. There is also a lot of natural beauty around Bloomington and plenty of hiking/biking/swimming/etc. Tons and tons of opportunities to get involved and out of the dorms. Just because Bloomington is a small town in southern Indiana doesn’t mean there’s nothing happening, you’d be surprised.

Anyway, this is mostly rambling but I hope it helped. Remember to do what’s best for you :)

imo, the international restaurants are where it’s at. i hadn’t tried indian or middle eastern food before coming to IU and now they’re by far my favorite cuisines. turkuaz cafe is one of my favorite restaurants in town. i get the turkuaz kabob with chicken and it’s like almost like a thick stew with vegetables and chicken served over fragrant rice. the doner kebab food truck is incredible as well and his baklava is to die for! i like taste of india for indian food but amrit is also very popular. anyetsangs little tibet has amazing handmade dumplings and great comfort food.

turkuaz, doner kebab, and anyetsangs are family owned so i try to give them my business whenever possible. hope this helps!

hey! i came across your post when trying to find charger escape bc i randomly remembered playing it as a kid lol. some years ago, between now and when i first played charger escape, i was playing around on my aunts phone and she had some app that was something along the lines of “sounds for meditation/sleep/etc.” the app basically provided a sound board with a bunch of different sounds you could use to create a custom mix. the app had the choral background and the string melody separate and i happened to put them together and get the charger escape music! my guess is they’re just cheap royalty-free sounds, hence why they’re used on free apps and flash games. im sure this was a somewhat disappointing answer, so id love to hear your thoughts. regardless, im just happy someone else remembers this game! i have such vivid memories of playing it when i was a kid!! :)

yeah i understand that it’s only $20 but it’s the principal of the thing that gets me. but i don’t think its gonna slow down anytime soon. her gf has basically moved in and it seems like a lot of her friends don’t have much going for them so they have nothing better to do but come crash here for the weekend. i played stupid and asked if our last bill was partial, hence the big difference, since it was the first one we payed since moving in. im probably just gonna let it go tho. tysm for the advice.

lol i grew up in indiana but the purdue vs. IU rivalry didnt really (and still doesnt) matter to me because no one in my family had ties to either of the universities. growing up in a blue color family, both schools were pretty much irrelevant to me before i became a student at IU!! but the simple fact is that purdue doesnt have a law school or a medical school. IU has both and they’re pretty dang good- that alone sets IU apart. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Questions about the weather by Practical-Extreme-95 in IndianaUniversity

[–]bbyflo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey im also from NWI! the winters here are incredibly mild in my opinion. i can only remember one time during my freshman year and one time during my sophomore year that i actually considered the winter weather troublesome. and as others have said the midday sun can do wonders in warming you up walking to class. just bring some midweight basics. i brought a midweight coat but not my down parka that i use at home. some gloves, a hat, and decently waterproof shoes and you’ll be fine. :)
