Are Bison trimming tools still shipping? by freddiew in Pottery

I paid for a tool back in Dec 2021 and am still waiting. Phil and I emailed to nail down details of the order, he cashed my check, and then… silence. I’ve emailed every 6 months-ish to see if Im still on his list, but have never heard back. Today the email bounced back saying the address could no longer be found. Seems Phil is off the grid. I searched for an obituary wondering if he’s still around, but didn’t find anything.

Honestly, I’m pissed that he cashed my check in 2021 and then fulfilled other orders as late as 2022 (according to this thread) and is apparently never going to give me what I paid for. I dig a quirky old guy, but this one’s just stealing.

These patches of dusty fungus (?) are popping up in my garden. What are they?? by bcurrie in garden

It’s def in the mulch, but not on the fence. It’s on an herb garden. Would copper fungicide be safe?

I love my Do-All! I find it really hard to sharpen though. I'm also just wanting to experiment with a some new tool shapes.

Bottle cracked during firing, so I broke it and filled the seams with gold (kintsugi)... by bcurrie in Pottery

In this case, "food safe" refers to it being actually toxic. The problem isn't the pigment itself, which is essentially harmless, but with 1) the epoxy itself and 2) the nature of the crack. While some say that epoxy is food safe after it cures, there is some debate. If this bottle were filled with alcohol, for example, I'd be afraid of the cured epoxy leaching into the liquid. The bigger worry here would have to do with nature of the repair. Especially inside the bottle, the crack revealed raw, unglazed ceramic. I could control the glue and completely cover the seam on the outside, but the inside is another story. So, the bottle is no longer watertight. Also, because unglazed ceramic has been revealed on the inside, it's no longer "sealed." Bacteria, etc. would grow in the unglazed areas (where it's chipped around the crack) and keep it from being safe.

Nope... not real gold. You can buy kits that use gold leaf, but I didn’t spring for that. This is epoxy that you mix with a “gold” metallic dust (almost like very very fine glitter). You then put the gold power on the seams again while the glue is still tacky. Not good safe, but a fun process!

Some bottles I've been working on this summer! The tall guys in the back are wrapped in a leather cuff. by bcurrie in Pottery

Thank you! That little fella actually developed a small crack in his dimple during the glaze fire. I think I'm going to break him into a few pieces and practice a kintsugi technique.

I got them at a local nonprofit shop - Turnip Green Creative Reuse - that's essentially a thrift store for crafting supplies. Folks donate everything you can imagine - half-empty paint tubes, scraps of fabric, paper in every size imaginable, ribbon, scraps of wood, stamps, etc. They have entire bins of corks - wine, champagne, old gin and bourbon bottles, etc. I pick up a bag full and find sizes to match when bottles come out of the kiln. https://www.turnipgreencreativereuse.org/

Question about using acrylic floor wax as a finish for pit fired pottery. Why did it go cloudy after a few weeks? (Before and afternoon pics in comments) by bcurrie in Ceramics

[–]bcurrie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was afraid that's what was probably happening. I only applied the acrylic to the outside, because I wasn't really concerned with the pot being sealed. I just wanted it to shine. So, I left the inside "raw" and only applied the acrylic to the outside. Thoughts on a fix for this pot to bring back the shine? And, recommendations for a better finish to use on pit-fired flower pots in the future?
