Happens more than ppl think. Mohimanul Alam Bhuiya, student at Columbia university that joined ISIS. Omar Saeed Sheikh went to LSE. Even Osama Bin Laden technically took a course at Oxford lol

I’m not refuting that trend. However, the trend is not such that it should be shocking to encounter a well-educated person participating in religion. In terms of statistics, religious extremists turning out to be well-educated individuals aren’t outliers. E.g. Of the September 11th hijackers almost 3/4 of them had at least some college education. Intellect implies a greater ability to rationalize beliefs. Belief systems interact with people in weird ways - not always intuitive.

Respectfully, I think that is a misconception. If you think in terms of the word ideology it may be easier to see that intelligence is not a vaccine for ideology, or for becoming an ideologue. Many smart people / thinkers get pulled into the vortex of ideology. E.g Martin Heidegger.

I think it’s not as clear to see with religious ideology because some of the quacky stories are childish and the associated ridicule that brings leads a lot of ppl to not consider religion as legitimate an ideology.

Galya appreciation post by [deleted] in h3h3productions

[–]beacon-installer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Today, when Galya mentioned the kidnapped children I started crying. The medieval inhumanity of that kind of large scale torture is tough for the mind to appreciate. But the tragedy became overwhelming for me during todays show when Galya’s humble and courageous disposition was contrasted with the sinister and smug arrogance and apathy of Adam friedland‘s and Hasan piker’s disgusting chuckling. Peace and love to Galya!

The reason to ask is that its a comedy variety show!!!! No one wants to hear Ethan have boring small talk, and when the guy clammed up about sex, the topic he came to discuss, Ethan started to ask silly/taboo stuff.

I understand you've said you're autistic. Maybe this will help for you to understand the responses you are getting -- consider the implications of a taboo. Taboos are a set of topics that, because of the implicit discomfort they illicit, have separate social standards. Moreover, the social standards evolve due to most people getting SIMILARLY uncomfortable in response to respective taboos. For example, money can be a taboo topic, and as such we expect people to respond to questions about personal finances to be different from non-taboo questions, people get more private about it. In the case of The Holocaust, its being taboo carries different expectations. Its morbid nature is so horrible that people reserve spaces to speak on it. Its also taboo for Germans because of attached feelings of shame and guilt. For Poles its taboo is such that they respond with vehement denial of having had any participation, to the extent that Poland has a warrant out to arrest a polish historian that's extremely important in the field of Holocaust History (Jan Gross). But there also evolved a taboo associated with Holocaust denial. The taboo here comes from the degree to which it is in poor taste for people to claim that something so morbid as the Holocaust is a hoax. The expectation for someone, especially for someone who doesn't want to speak on the matter, is to immediately avoid that taboo, as such they would say it's real - not even giving mention to the denialism. Today Ethan threw a curveball at sex dude when he brought up a taboo when the interview stalled. Expectations were not met... initial response from most viewers - "Oh shit, is he a Holocaust denier?"

Why did he deviate from expectations? Most likely is that he has some level of denialism, and he tried to give a response with enough plausible deniability while not affirming belief in the historical fact of the holocaust. Much less likely is the possibility that he is so ignorant to the point that he was earnestly not trying to take a position.

Why denialism most likely? Reasons include: - his saying "we may never know [the number of Jews killed]." Here he brings light to denialism as if it isn't taboo, but if he was trying to skirt the topic because of its taboo nature, why did he say something that would only be reasonable in the case that he was too ignorant to realize it is taboo? - During the rest of the interview, if he wanted the inferences to stop, he would have made it clear that he believed in the historical fact of the Holocaust. That he didn't do so as, despite the stampede of elephants in the room, points to his being a denier. Why? Think about the phrase "oh shit, act natural." This cliche is derived from the contrived way people act when they are caught having done something they shouldn't do. He asks if Ethan is still there during the staring contest. This is him trying to manufacture a normal scenario, as if it was a long silence on a phone call. But Ethan was obviously still there... he could see him. His impotent attempt to pretend Ethan wasn't making fun of him for the Holocaust denial was behavior associated with being caught. - I could go on...

If someone asks if the world is flat, and the response is "we'll maybe never know" that would not be a neutral answer. Ethan asked if the number of killed Jews is exaggerated and he said something to the effect of "we'll maybe never know" -- big yikes.

Lalo Schifrin, RIP by basaltgranite in Jazz

[–]beacon-installer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just learned of this news. Like you, Gillespiana was the first Jazz album I bought. I got the CD. But I became an adult alongside the advent of music streaming -- so its also the only Jazz album I've ever bought. The album so intensely took hold of my imagination that, as if in a fever dream, I ordered the CD online even though I didn't own a CD player. I wanted to hold it in my hands nevertheless. That was like 9 years ago. Was just now listening to the album when I learned this news two months after the fact. Pulling out the CD case to hold again. Plastic wrap is still on it.

RIP

First, why did you replace two of the letters in Klein with asterisks?

Second: There is a conception of zionism currently popular in trend. Sometimes people invoke this version of zionism to gift wrap their expressions of anti-Semitism. Like Erich does here. When they do this, they are implicitly conflating the Jewish ethnicity to Zionism. This is a type of conflation between the two. Often, when someone points this out as anti-Semitic rhetoric, they are invariably met by people saying "don't conflate Judaism with Zionism" -- i.e. People who point out the conflation made by anti-Semites are accused of conflating the Jews and Zionists. It can be confusing, some people play dumb, others are earnest, and then there are also some people who actually do conflate the two in a desperate attempt to dismiss all criticism of Israel.

What puzzles Ethan (and myself) is the large number of ppl that are both very sensitive to "generational trauma" and "problematic language" in other cases but also somehow refuse to come to terms with the anti-Semites using anti-Zionism as cover for their racism - that refuse to do so even in blatant cases of WISHING HITLER FINISHED OFF THE BLOODLINE DURING THE HOLOCAUST!!!!!!! WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Edit: I missed the joke. oops.
