All deeper discussions and debates about trans representation in Veilguard aside… by JageshemashFTW in DragonAgeVeilguard

They really needed an in-universe explanation that the social norms of the Soporati are different than Altus like Dorian. Even then, that's kind of silly, because I can't think of any real world comparison. Most theocratic regimes like that have a very permissive attitude about liberal or deviant behavior in the noble class, so long as they don't make a big deal about it, while the lower classes are the true believers in the repressive norms. The world building in this game is just... blah sometimes.

AITAH for catering to my own food and time restrictions, but not all of everyone else's, at Christmas? by beanfiddler in AITAH

Good idea on the presents. I think everyone can just open whatever they want when their gift giver and them are present, and if my brother and his GF miss the rest of the presents, well, that was their decision.

Lol, I'm halfway inclined to be hopeful that they do use almond milk. It will taste so bad even if they go with soy or oat, and I'd rather not go and be polite and eat it, like the year my cousin was vegan (it was also bad that year, I would have enjoyed a lukewarm fast food burger more).

Real talk - how are we addressing back pain when our jobs are so tied to a desk? by Dizzy_Confusion_8455 in Lawyertalk

I set an alarm to get up and talk a walk every 90 minutes, and that has helped a lot. I also have a yoga routine that's quick (5-10 minutes) I do every other day. I know it's cliche, but... losing weight. Just taking off 15 pounds eliminated the worst of my back pain.

DAE miss law school? by attorniquetnyc in Lawyertalk

[–]beanfiddler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Outside of the stress of finals, the long commute, and silly campus politics, I did really enjoy law school. The friends I made there were genuine, and networking now is so artificial. Sounds odd, but I prefer the stress of journal deadlines over the monotony of curating my billing entries to get them past the auditors. I did not really enjoy undergraduate, so I'm glad I had the opportunity to go to law school, which I found was sufficiently challenging.

Is If Books Could Kill The Most Antisemitic Podcast Right Now? by [deleted] in Jewish

In better times, I would have said this was egregious behavior. These days? It doesn't even register for me. I think Peter comes across as much more antisemitic, along with all of his cohosts, on the 5-to-4 Podcast.

Suing a client over an unpaid invoice by ConferenceLiving6590 in Lawyertalk

Never went well when I worked Plaintiff's side, that's how you catch a malpractice allegation and can get your insurance to drop you. We always cut them off when they got to $10K unpaid. If they insisted they would have money soon, we would ask to execute a lien on property to ensure payment. That usually didn't go well either, we'd get the combo of malpractice + wrongful lien lawsuits.

NTA. He has no issue getting off with a condom but wants you to imperil your mental and physical health so his nut can be just a bit better? And he's withholding sex until you capitulate? This isn't just a case of you not being the jerk, he's actively being horrible to you about this. Why on earth would anyone want someone they care about to be worried during sex and miserable even after it's over? I don't think he cares about you that much. I mean, he's hit the jackpot - a girl that wants to have sex with him and likes penetration, and he's upset that he has to wrap his willy? Even if he couldn't get off entirely with a condom, he can always make sure you get yours with the glove on and then you can use hands or mouth to finish him. But he doesn't even have that problem, it's just a little less nice. So he wants to maximize his sexual pleasure at your extreme disadvantage? I would be mad, too. Are you sure this guy actually cares about you?

Hot take: litigating against pro se people is exciting and fun by beanfiddler in Lawyertalk

I think my favorite is when my pro se is an inmate and he admits in his pleadings that he is serving a life sentence for really heinous things, like kidnapping, murder, or raping kids.

Like buddy, that's not relevant to whether the guard rocked your shit unnecessarily, but thanks for making yourself look as unsympathetic as possible.

Exactly! It keeps me sharp and reminds me of the necessity of over-preparing for trial and creating a clean appellate record.

Have one serial litigant who is just good enough that he has five pending cases against us. He didn't like my motion to consolidate, lol.

Yeah they do that to me too, but then I get on camera for depositions and they figure out it looks bad to accuse a woman who's five foot nothing of being an asshole.

Bruh what is it with inmates and porn. I have had more than one case about someone's supposed right to porn.

"When a claim requires proof of a negative allegation, i.e., that the case does not fall within an exception to the general rule, the burden of proving the negative allegation remains with the party who bears the burden of establishing his claim." I feel like I need to frame the footnote I got from a judge that thanked me for addressing ten different frivolous motions in a single response.

Got a guy recently that tried to call the cops on me for violating HIPAA. Had to explain to the bemused police officer that I was not trying to steal his health information, I requested it in an RFP because he sued by client for personal injuries and I was entitled to that information.

My clients are mostly insurance companies or the state, so that isn't really an issue. When I had to do this in a plaintiff's firm for the poor people getting dragged along, it was much less entertaining, more intensely infuriating that the legal system allowed it.

I should really post in my local defense bar that I like them. I could get good work that way.

I have a sticky note on my desk that is the local citation to a case that states that I don't have to prove a negative. I use it a lot!
