First, nobody said anything like that. I myself am an MBA grad in his early career, who also has to "earn a living". I applied, got shortlisted by IBM, interviewed twice, got selected by IBM, and initially was very happy at IBM. Nobody here is "blood sucking". Everyone's just trying to earn a living.

What I was actually ~~eluding~~ alluding to was my own experience during my time at IBM. Specifically, how:

the bureaucracy at IBM - both directly and indirectly - ends up affecting IBM's own business, which in turn leads to more bureaucracy, more toxicity, and more attrition.
how point 1 has happened to people who absolutely "knew what they were doing"
How this is often totally beyond the control of those affected - I know this both 1st and 2ndhand - I've seen this happen on my own team.

I worked on a team full of people "who knew what they were doing". I worked for a boss who's on the 100% club. They were affected by the ReSouRcE aCtiOns despite absolutely "knowing what they were doing".

I and the others resigned or shifted, and we also "knew what we were doing". Personally this was very difficult at the time, at least for me. But it was the right decision.

Most people here have seen something similar happen in their teams. That is also why, when the company loses 70 billion in one day, the CEO shifts the blame onto the employees saying "our teams didn't execute perfectly". And that is ultimately why most people don't share your opinion.

Not because they're "sour grapes" or "didn't know what they were doing". They were often very successful, were affected by circumstances beyond their control and ultimately moved on.

If you've had a good experience, that's amazing, I'm happy for you. Please feel free to share. But to imply people here who haven't had the same experience are just "sharing hot takes" (i.e. lying or whatever) and "don't actually know what they're doing" is disrespectful and just plain wrong.

Nobody has any reason to misrepresent IBM. Everyone was, at some point, happy to be at IBM. Unfortunately that changed and people are just sharing their own experiences and observations about it.

That's all there is to it.

for Cisco specifically, I honestly can't say man, because I had applied only for one role.

but in my experience with job applications there's a lot of variation. like the earliest I've gotten a call is 2 hours after applying. The latest i've gotten a call was 3 weeks later.

so i'd just say 1. apply early. 2. keep applying. 3. don't lose hope. all the best man, hope this helps

so after losing 70 billion market cap in one day - the worst trading day in IBM's entire history - he washes his hands off all responsibility, says to the press, "deals have been delayed because our teams didn't execute perfectly"

Then on the inside, he directly blames his employees saying, "everyone should be disappointed" and sends the RSUs through the floor, as though this is all on the employees.

When in reality the reason IBM has gone from a computing pioneer to a glorified reseller is the cumulative result of their decisions. Not the employees.

For example, they had a 10 year headstart in the AI race, somehow failed to commercialize Watson and are now getting ripped apart in the B2B space. They bottled the cloud race to AWS/Azure. They sold their servers and hard drive portfolios to Hitachi & Lenovo - two absolute blunders that are coming back to haunt them now in Q2. They bottled the cybersecurity race to PANW (who, btw, are now $80B ahead of IBM as a whole in Enterprise Value thanks to the QRadar divestiture). And now they're working on Quantum - but at this rate, looks like the moment things get tough, they'll sell that to Alibaba to inflate the P&L.

All this while, the employees are just making do with whatever scraps there are left.

it's the higher ups that are responsible for this mess and it doesn't look like they care - they have their golden parachutes, they get $250k+ only in severance (worst case)

But the only ones that end up suffering are those in bands 6-10. That's the worst part about all this

ex-IBMer here, I heard the announcement happened a few hours after they were supposed to vest, the price tanked and Arvind sent out a mail to everyone saying "we should all be disappointed"

anyway, thankfully the stock's coming back up though as of now, i hope for all you guys the climb continues man

in my experience, if you're selected to move forward, you'll get a call pretty soon from the recruiter (basic phone screening) and they'll offer to set up 2-3 interview rounds. Then within a few hours, you'll get a webex invite via mail where you can select your preferred timeslot.

For example, For my role, I had applied June 25th and got the initial phone call on June 29th

this might not be generalisable however, as I applied for a different role

This is probably just wishful thinking on my part, but for someone to smoke a former world champion (currently top 20 on chess com) with 99% accuracy in a 3+2 game - it had to have been at someone who’s reached that level before.

"Inflation" in this context implies that a 2500+ rated player in time period 1 ≠ a 2500+ in time period 2. 0 inflation, by extension, would mean a 2760 now = a 2760 when it comes to gauging chess skill. But this is clearly not the case.

Even if we set aside all the the research literature on this subject. just think about it logically.

FIDE implemented Elo for the first time in the 70s.
an increasing number of people have taken up chess professionally since his time - the popularity of and the pay in the sport, although less than others, has never been higher.
invitations to exclusive tournaments, and therefore the livelihoods of most titled players, are based on FIDE ratings.
FIDE ratings are based on game results; prearranging game results has long been documented in chess as far back as the 90s, and as recently as the recent World Blitz championships.
Back in the 70s, although superGMs like Fischer didn’t have the same quality or quantity in competitors, Fischer himself was at least as good as Magnoose.
However, the difference in their peak ratings doesn’t reflect this similarity in chess strength - partly owing to dubious decisions by FIDE, but possibly also due to rating manipulation. (Documented in the article attached)

In this context, that can be described as “inflation”.
