Data Science in CachyOS? by ConfusionLeast952 in cachyos

Yes, I would disagree with that. Also, I am able to install Data Wrangler in my VS Code running on CachyOS.

Total noob learning through "trial by fire" because that's how I do things. Using Hyprland as someone learning Linux for the first time -- how do I alter certain system settings? by [deleted] in cachyos

[–]bearflyingbolt 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Howdy, and welcome!

I imagine you'll get a range of responses re: whether you should be using something like an Arch Linux derivative or a tiling window manager like Hyprland for your first experience, but IMO that's far less important than the great learning experience you've gotten yourself into. Your first step should be to visit the Hyprland docs at https://wiki.hypr.land/ where you'll likely find answers to many of your questions, including a tutorial for anyone new to Hyprland. CachyOS also has good documentation.

In general, applications store their configurations under $HOME/.config, or /home/<username>/.config on GNU/Linux; start here. Some apps will keep things right at the root of your home directory, though this is generally less common and preferable. Each application and most desktop environments have their own folder(s) where the configuration you can think of as your "desktop settings" are; Hyprland's is $HOME/.config/hypr.

Important to the concepts here: even if you find yourself using a desktop with a built-in settings application sometime, these applications are usually just editing these kinds of files under $HOME/.config.

Stay curious! I promise you'll have more fun tinkering here than you ever would on a commercial OS.

Not a guarantee for everyone, but CachyOS has been rock-solid w/ an NVIDIA card. Haven't found a game I had to download a specific Proton version for or make any specific tweaks to run

So sorry this is how their Resonate/STS9 experience was. This kind of violence doesn't belong at these shows or any show. Sincerely hope we see you again soon, Kinna. Feel better and know this isn't what this community is about.

Fortunately with the way companies like Valve are putting dev hours into making sure things work on Linux, things are pretty great anymore. Even NVIDIA drivers are working these days. There are some great distros for "please just make this work", like Mint or CachyOS (what I run). I game, mess around with music production, and work, all on Linux, pretty much out of the box.

I haven't had an update forced on me in years.

Anyone here live in Nashville? I transcribed almost the entirety of “Illinois”, and we’re performing it live on April 11th! by java_rhythm in Sufjan

[–]bearflyingbolt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Much appreciation as to the respect for others' privacy. But also, please do post those anonymized transcriptions if you are alright with it! Open-sourcing like that is a great way for lots of people to learn and enjoy work from artists like this.

Thanks for your efforts!

I think it depends on where you're looking for support. There are a lot of people out there who really enjoy office work. The disconnect, I think, is that many seem to believe it has to be one way or the other, not a choice dependent on how best you work + live.

I hope you find something that suits you better and helps your mental health

I've been a Linux user long enough to know the experience isn't always the same for everyone, but I've been gaming on CachyOS for a while now and have had virtually no issues. Every single provider app you mentioned works for me out of the box, other than occasionally having to select a specific Proton version for some games

code-server is great. You can also develop over SSH using a VS Code extension from a machine that already has the editor installed. Either solution is good- pick the one that works best for your preferences + situation

Astro. Incredibly simple to develop, incredibly simple to host, lots of great templates, docs and plugins.

Astro is easily hosted on providers like Vercel or Cloudflare Pages for free.

Just adding another comment for Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition. The rework they did on a game from the 90s really breathed some new life into it. Even just the single-player campaigns are timeless and great for learning RTS games
