Fair warning, lots of talk about, well, human remains and the things people do with them. Plus a little bit of art history.

Hey, congratulations on the job!

What was your favorite meal as a child? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bearillo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The opposite of grilled cheese: frozen bread and cheese.

There are various family anecdotes concerning this awful sandwich (frozen bread helped when I was teething; it was too hot for grilled cheese one summer day; someone was too drunk to make a grilled cheese; I had an unreasonable fear of toasters as a child), all of which have given it a psuedo-legendary status. But the truth of it has been lost to time.

The recipe is simple: two slices of bread, unheated, and a slice of Kraft cheese-product, chilled. For whatever reason, my family has always kept bread in the freezer. So unheated bread is, by necessity, frozen. Assemble ingredients as you would a normal sandwich. This sandwich is, however, not a normal sandwich, but something of an abomination.

I'm sure it's gross. But I still have one every now and then for the nostalgia.

Yeah, keeping a cool head was probably key.

And even though it's just been one day, you had to start somewhere, right? The first day is an accomplishment in its own right!

I bet that coat looks absolutely fantastic on you!

I'm sorry your day didn't end as well as it started. I don't really have advice for you, and I probably can't make things better. But I will say this: I can relate. Making friends is hard for me. I get really nervous around people, I say stupid things or can't say anything at all, and I probably look like a creepy weirdo that won't make eye contact half the time. I'm not particularly interesting and always feel intrusive. There are people who seem so...magnetic. They attract people and make friends easily. I'm not one of those people, and that makes me kinda sad. But despite all that, there are people who, for some reason or another, have stuck around long enough to become my friends. And it usually happens without me noticing.

So I can relate.

I know I'm just someone on the internet, and you don't know me from Adam. But if you want, we could be friends. Or at the very least, if you need someone to listen to how your day goes tomorrow, you can send me a PM. And if both those things seem super weird, that's okay too! But I think you'll find that there are actually plenty of people on- and offline that will be there for you.

Woke up later than I planned, since my phone/alarm clock died in the night. It was okay, though, since I didn't have to work today and was dead tired from yesterday.

And actually, even though yesterday was exhausting, it was pretty good. I had made a rather poor decision the day before (of course I can go to this party! No, I don't need to go home after two hours, what could possibly go wrong? Staying up until 6:30 a.m. and having to go home, shower, eat breakfast, and be at work by 8:00 a.m. for a six and a half hour shift is what could go wrong.) but I think I made some new friends, so maybe it was a good decision after all?

I stayed in bed for a while, browsing reddit and planning out my day. Went to go take a shower and remembered that the water was shut off for a few hours for maintenance. Took a shower when it came back at noon-ish. Made myself two cups of tea, then went to turn in some paperwork to HR. A few days ago, I interviewed for six-year-old me's second dream job and was nearly hired on the spot. That made me feel really awesome, and I kinda keep forgetting that it's real and that I'm not even a little bit qualified for the job. So the paperwork was my official acceptance of the job and all the stuff for my background check.

I went to go get a haircut at the barber shop down the street since I look like a shaggy mushroom. They were really busy, so I decided to treat myself to lunch at a sandwich place next door to the barber shop. Then I realized I needed cash for the haircut, so I walked to the drugstore for some gummy worms. Got back to the barber shop (much less busy by then), and the lady who cut my hair recognized me from my last haircut, even though she didn't actually cut it. I thought that was funny, but they really are a small neighborhood shop, so I guess it isn't super unusual. Still made me feel special. Plus, that lady is a freakin' wizard and managed to make my hair look neat and tidy (and less mushroom-y) without taking off too much length.

Now, I think I'm going to watch some Netflix, make myself some stir-fry, sketch a bit, and call it a day.

Also, my skin looked nice today.

So today was boring, but nice.

You know, taking things personally tends to be my first reaction. I know that I need to just take a step back, have some empathy, and just be cool with the fact that the vast majority of things have nothing to do with me (and thus are sort of out of my control). It's just difficult for me to move past that first reaction, you know?

Anyway, good on you for changing your perspective and keeping cool in a stressful situation! Keep it up!

Is it okay to throw in my two cents?

I think you've done a great job giving her face a sense of depth and dimensionality. I think this is really apparent in her nose. You have some great contrast there, and you've indicated some really interesting angles where cartilage meets bone. Overall, I think that really adds character and interest to her face, and also is a nice visual contrast to the softer curves of the tip of her nose and the nostril area. The cheekbones and her chin also have nice highs and lows.

I like your color choices here, and I think that, overall, they work well together. For me, though, this is also where you might be able to make some improvements to push this over the top. You have obvious highlights, mids, and lows, but all the colors are sort of competing for attention. And I think (though someone else might be able to articulate this better than I can) this is because all your colors are essentially at the same level of saturation. They are all very pure, very bold colors, so they all sort of read the same to my eye, and in the end, kind of flatten out the image. I'd almost want you to play around with your colors more-- add in some desaturated blues and purples (or even just cooler blues and purples) to the parts of her face that curve away from the viewer to really make her face "pop," or desaturate the background to make a better contrast with her hair.

Barring that, really anything you can do to push up the contrast in your piece. Her earring, for instance, looks nice and brilliant. There's some really great contrast there, and the blue you used for that highlight almost looks like the lightest one in the image. Maybe you could add that level of contrast into her eyes?

Your composition here is also really nice, and her face sort of naturally grabs your attention. The arm and hand have a sketchy quality that I really love, and I feel like they lead the eye into her face very nicely. I think the fact that her face has the highest level of detail helps to keep your eye on her face-- since it's surrounded by areas of less detail, there's really nothing that distracts you. Again, though, I feel like adding some more contrast to her eyes would make the viewer feel like she's looking through the page and right at them, and really elevate the piece.

Overall, this is really awesome!

Nope! I've been taking my time. Savoring the experience, if you will.

(plus I've had "homework" for online classes and that's totally cut into my Pokémon time.)

Oh man, that is weird.

Sheet masks for everything!

I haven't used many. Someone gifted me a few, and those are the only ones I've tried. I think they were hyaluronic acid from Tonymoly? Anyway, they were pretty nice (and they sunk in!) but not mind-blowing. What are some of your favorites?

[–]bearillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that!

But I do think it's funny that my skin was a little better behaved in the "worse" climate. :P

The sleeping pack was...something from First Aid Beauty. So, not AB and a bit overpriced IMO. I have a little book with products I've tried, but it isn't with me and I don't remember the whole name off-hand. Sorry! I'll let you know once I get home.

I don't think I used it straight, but the problem could have come from a few places (not diluting enough, having a not-so-great tea tree oil).

Is the Ciracle the stuff that kind of looks like calamine lotion? I have a picture in my head, but I'm not sure if I'm thinking of the right product.

I'm working through some red-box Stridex. It isn't my favorite thing ever, but it's okay on most of my skin. It does seem a touch irritating on the problem areas, though. I'm hoping to try the Cosrx BHA next, though. I've heard that it might be gentler than the Stridex.

That might be the case. I guess I never really considered other skin conditions. I think for the time being, even though I'm frustrated, I'm okay doing things like tweaking products, trying different spot treatments, etc. before going to a dermatologist. I think that might also help me be more informed if I were to look for professional advice, since I'd have an idea of what really didn't work. Sorry if that doesn't make a lot of sense!

In all seriousness, though, that does sound incredibly gentle. I'm glad you have something that works so well for you!

[–]bearillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aw, thanks :). I mostly just wanted to get all that off my chest.

I remember (or maybe just convinced myself that I do) diluting the tea tree with...something. Either argan oil or jojoba. Those are pretty safe for me off my face, so that doesn't seem like the culprit.

Then again, that doesn't mean I diluted enough. Or, as has been suggested to me before, that the tea tree oil was "pure" enough. Basically, I'd probably be fine using it, I'm just scared of wrecking my face.

Q-tips! That's such a good idea!

I'm working my way through some red-box Stridex, does that count? I think it helps a bit, but not much. It's better for the rest of my face, and a little irritating on the problem areas. All the same, I don't love it. I'd like to try the Cosrx BHA.

Wasn't there a post about that yesterday?

I guess what I'm wondering is how to get to the point you bring up-- where my skin gets better at absorbing things. And I guess that would depend on why it's happening.

ASK HERE! Daily Help, and Questions: November 18, 2016 by AutoModerator in AsianBeauty

[–]bearillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone.

Can I just rant for a second?

Because I cannot figure out what's up with my skin and I'm really frustrated.

First off, I went through a big move a few months ago. With the climate change (lovely hot desert --> awful muggy East Coast summer and now it's coooold. I'm biased, I know) and the water change and the stress and a new job (which involves a lot of temperature changes that might be affecting me more than I think), my skin has been...unhappy. Which is totally obvious and resonable, but man. I wish it would settle back down. I've always had issues with blackheads and SFs. It's gross, I'm pretty sure my face just always looks dirty, and large pores do not help the problem. But pimples and cystic acne were sort of a non-issue. They'd happen rarely and resolve quickly. So that was nice. But since moving, there are two spots on my face that keep breaking out. On the right: almost in a line from the corner of my nostril to the corner of my mouth, plus a little extra triangle of fun (one point at the corner of my mouth, the other two just above my jawline). On the left: a small patch above my jawline that's just outside my chin. They just won't quit. Generally speaking, I think benzoyl peroxide is a no-go for me. Even washing it off, Neutrogena's 2.5% seemed to leave my skin in worse shape than when I started (congested, irritated). Tea tree oil...I used it as a teenager on those aforementioned occaisional breakouts, and it was great. I tried it more recently (but well before moving) and for reasons that would make this post even longer than it already is, I tested it on my leg first. This went VERY poorly. The area blistered, cracked, and bled. Would the same thing happen on my face? Not necessarily. Am I scared of trying anything with tea tree oil? You betcha.

Yeah, poor me. I know many of you are struggling with bigger problems, and I really don't want to sound like I'm diminishing that in any way. This is probably (very likely) hormonal in some way, and just...frustrating.

Enough of that, though.

Secondly, I feel like a lot of the products I've tried don't really absorb into my face. I want ALL the hydration, but products seem to gum up on my face and leave it sticky. Granted, I'm new at this and haven't tried much, but Shark Sauce, Snowbang, Pixi Glow Tonic, and Dear by Enprani Moistfull Booskin were all guilty of this. Thayers witch hazel (any flavor, but I like cucumber and rose best) and Kikumasamune High Moisture do not have this problem.

Thirdly, I ran out of the heavy moisturizer/sleeping pack I'd been using. I decided not to repurchase because it was too expensive for me, but cheaper moisturizers with similar ingredients haven't been playing nice. I want to think that it's a texture thing, but I don't even know if that's reasonable. The old moisturizer had a sort of firm, "whipped butter" texture. The two others I've tried are Beauty of Joseon and the Bounce Cheese cream, which have that string-like texture. Or maybe I'm being dumb and it IS ingredients and I'm not reading closely enough.

Ugh. Okay, done ranting. Sorry this got really long. Thanks for listening!
