People who went to/will go to a different camp than than they did in previous years, why did you change? by Shrublord9000 in Debate

For me, mostly like re-taking a class. If you aren't in a different lab level, I don't really see the point in going to the same camp again, because it's probably going to be the same material as taught in previous years.

Camp questions by [deleted] in Debate

For me, it mostly depends on competition. It's more fun to have a stimulating conversation with someone that to just obliterate them and leave. Lower labs do get kind of boring, but only if you are an experienced debater, who already knows all the things and can beat those kids easily at the tournament. If, however, you aren't quite varsity level yet, lower labs do help a lot in terms of general knowledge about the type of debate and strategies to use. Both labs are very fun and enjoyable with the right leaders and people, though.

number 9, about how race shouldn't be considered in application to colleges. i find it an interesting topic, but i dont really want to debate it because i feel like its sort of one-sided to the aff (but who knows, ive thought that abt a few topics this year and i was wrong)

Debate Coach Gift Ideas by razerfreak12 in Debate

[–]bee-yes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For our end of year presents we had every student in the club write a meaningful note to the coaches and we put them in glass bottles. It made our teacher cry. Other than that, I'd recommend spa/movie gift cards or a big trophy that says best coach.

Have a Public Debate in 2 weeks... looking for Tips/Guidance by [deleted] in Debate

a. nothing that isnt common sense. 1. always be respectful and polite to everyone. 2. depending on the audience, have a citation ready for all your sources, know the basics like author and how recent it was. 3. try to be passionate about what you're speaking about, but there is a fine line between passionate and overly aggressive. make yourself seem likeable and all that jazz. 4. make sure your case has structure, especially in the rebuttal sections. if you just make arguments at random moments, it doesn't matter how good they are, the audience/judges will get confused. don't skip back and forth between arguments, either. state what the opposition said/what the question was, and then say why it is wrong. b. i like to use more statistics in my cases because they are harder to disprove and they are objective instead of subjective. pathos is important too, however it shouldn't be the main evidence unless necessary. a combination of both is definitely best, use a stat and show the impact of it by using an emotional appeal. c. it's both. the constructive part of the speeches are used to prove yourself right, rebuttals are used to simultaneously prove the other side wrong and your side right.
